Totally understand where you are coming from. But when life gets crazy - and it certainly has gotten crazy - I sew for peace. I can't control the world or the people around me, but I CAN control the fabric and thread. It keeps me centered and sane. I withdraw into my world until I feel at peace. And that makes my heart and soul happy. Hope you heal quickly Viv!

Don't forget...watch sewing KZbin videos like..."Vivmom Sews"! Getting up, moving, working with your hands...great advice. Any form of "exercise" can keep us from depression. Love the jumpsuit. So sorry about your injuries. Good to see you again. Happy New Year!

So wonderful to see you. Ouch! What a horrible fall. I'm so glad nothing broke. Love that you have your sweet Brad to help at times like that... and the loo emergency. Had to giggle. You are crazy cute in that adorable jump suit. Tell Candice we look forward to seeing her with her mom soon. Feel better.

For me it’s not that I can’t sew ~ it’s that I just don’t wanna sew. You described a lot of situations that I was raising my hand ~ saying yup that’s me. I’ve got a whole lotta time in 2021 to sew. I have many piles of lovely fabrics ~ some new patterns that I can’t wait to sew ~ It’s all there waiting for me. I’ll just dust off my sewing machine, and when the mood strikes ~ I’ll be loving my time sewing and creating again. Thank you for the pep talk. Happy New Year. 🧵🪡

Viv, what a great video! In true Vivmom fashion, you keep encouraging us no matter what else is going on! Thank you! Like you, the challenges I've had these last three months have seemed insurmountable almost every day. Fortunately I had some sewing projects cut out that I could work on when time permitted and I felt like I could do a bit. It truly helped me cope with my stress! Also, looking at my list of finished sewing projects from the past year was pure joy as well! My first project clear back on January 2, 2020 was my Vivmom vintage pattern challenge! I've got to tell you, I was so surprised! This year has felt so long, I truly thought I'd made my dress two years ago! But no, it was in 2020. Thank you for the permission and encouragement to take time to enjoy our fabric and patterns! I am going to do that for a while before bed right now! Sending you my love and prayers for healing, Tammy

There are times when I have so many things I have to get done or need to get done that I just get “stuck”. There are also times when those unfortunate “events” of illness or injury get in the way of our creativity. It happens to all of us at one time or another. Thanks for sharing your experience and I am so glad you were not seriously hurt. Your jumpsuit is so cute! Look forward to seeing your new fabric and hearing your ideas for new makes!

So sorry to hear about your accidents, hope you are on the mend. I have been in a slump with all my usual hobbies in 2020. Don’t want to sew, don’t want to read, don’t want to do anything really. I keep telling myself I am in my 50’s and need to get going but it’s not happening. You are right we have so much to be thankful for and I am hoping 2021 will be much better which will help our headspace xx

First off, I literally laughed (which I haven't done too much of lately) hysterically at your jumpsuit/loo story. Oh, my -- thank you for that. Love the jumpsuit, by the way. BRAVO. I felt pain while you shared your front steps fall and chopping broccoli story. OUCH. I have my own lack of motivation story and tactics to keep on keepin' on, and it helps to hear I'm not alone. I just love ya, Viv. You'd be someone I choose as a friend. HAPPY New Year and good-bye 2020.

I needed to hear these words of wisdom from Seer Viv! I was feeling a tiny bit depressed - cabin fever it's called I guess. It is nice and helpful to know others are feeling dumpy and ugly! I still feel dumpy but not quite so ugly. We are lucky to feel as well as we do and so many blessings. I just want to go somewhere preferably with a fabric store galore. You look ravishing by the way and love your hair.

Falling is very traumatizing! I find that when I keep hurting myself or making mistakes, I need to rest! Rest and pamper yourself. Not being inspired to sew is like having writer's block. Hmmm, a new quilt block! I'm inspired! I love you Viv! 💞 You're just transitioning and moving to a new level!

57 year old baby 😂 I’ve done the same, I feel you. I’ve struggled this year, with lots of things and my sewing has taken a bashing and I cannot at the moment be bothered with it. VivMom, So glad to see you....in your healing process. Thanks for the "non sewing" advice today. I retired 2 1/2 years ago and all I've sewn is a cloth face mask...by hand!. I have a separate sewing room chock full of tons of fabric and all the notions I need, but just can't seem to spend any time in there...it's so closed off from the rest of the house. (I like your idea of sewing in the dining room). Today I put away some Christmas items and began to look around and re-fold some of my fabric and was just glad I had it all and I still love it all. I sew garments and quilts and find it hard to think about cutting into some of the yardage, but my goal is to sew up all the fabric into SOMETHING...before I GO...ha ha. Love watching your videos and can't wait to see Candace again for the unboxing. Happy New Year! Nancy Oh

Sorry to hear about your fall on the ice - how unfortunate. There is snow and ice outside my house and I feel nervous when walking to the shops. Perhaps it's best if you rest just at the moment. I have experienced 'slumps' in sewing in the past so I understand what you are saying. It happens with my knitting. I am looking forward to sewing this next year_ after years of not sewing and I have some fabrics lined up. Your videos have given me inspiration and thank you. Take care from Elaine.

Oh my. I'm glad to hear you are on the mend. I was never so accident prone as when I was going through menopause. Most of it was my own fault due to inattentiveness. I haven't sewn much this year simply because my sewing space became a storage/junk area after moving my father in law in. It was a rough year taking care of him with the help of hospice care. He passed in October. Now I'm try to get the umph to reclaim my space and start sewing again. For some reason I did manage to continue stocking up on fabric though. Lol

Your words really resonate with everyone. Even if you don’t sew, they apply. I am feeling low lately, a lot of stress going on in our lives here at home. What a year!! Seems like none I have ever known. But you are so right about just doing something! I do not sew right now, but I used to, and I love watching you and the things you make! I crochet, but am getting a little board with the afghan, so I am going to try crafting such as diamond painting and jewelry making. Maybe a different small crochet project. Sometimes it is Sooo hard to get motivated, but I think I really need to push myself to get started! I am sorry about your fall and finger injury and sincerely hope you are feeling well soon. Looking forward to your materials video! Take care! 😊💗

Bless your heart, you have had a really rough time these past month. I can relate! Took a hunk of skin out right below my thumb while finishing a quilt, have a heel spur that is very painful. I too cut my bangs way to short bc I could not get an appointment with my hairdresser due to the covid. My daughter and her family had Covid so I had to be in self quarantine twice and all I could think was as much as I miss my parents I was thankful they didn’t have to suffer through this year like so may have that are elderly. As you talked I kept thinking “oh my stars, I’m not the only one who thinks or feels this way”! We can only be thankful that God has got us through it all! Love the Christmas jumpsuit and happy to see you made it through the rough spell. Keep the faith and happy thoughts, 2020 will be gone in two days and we are all hoping and praying for a better year. See you sewing soon!

Happy Eighth Day of Christmas. And... Wow! The Little House books are an all-time personal favorite. And... not even to mention that Caroline “Ma” Ingalls had to make everything she sewed with a hand sewn back stitch using a needle & thread with her fingers! Not even a treadle machine out there in the big woods, the prairie, or By the Shores of Silver Lake. When I sit down at my machines, I think of that era & say a prayer of thanksgiving. Prayers for you-healing, vigor, & joy in whatever you’re choosing to do for the new year.

Oh my gosh Viv! I’m so sorry for your fall and your injuries. Glad nothing was broken and you are on the mend. I can so relate...I took a bad fall at work a few years ago...getting out of my car not realizing about the ice. I slid...my feet went up and I came down hard on my hip and back - it threw everything off. I felt like I was in a car accident. I appreciate your wise words and pep talk. We are all feeling the stress and anxiety of this crazy year. Totally lost my mojo for all things I love to do...sewing, painting, baking, journaling/writing. I have been sitting way too much and watching too much Netflix and such. I did start some painting using a stencil earlier this month...I really enjoyed doing something creative. I love the idea of looking at my patterns, fabric and sewing magazines to get the sewing itch back. Your jump suit is adorable! And you look gorgeous as always. You are such an inspiration. Happy New Year to you and your family! Cheers!

You poor thing. A bit of a bad luck streak? I think this is an important conversation to have. 🙏 It applies to sewing, to work, to cooking for others or yourself... and more. Melancholy, the blues, depression or whatever we may call it is real and too often « feel » unsurmountable. I love the advice of keeping sewing in the periphery and keeping active, to just do something. It is gold! I love that you are back, don’t feel pressured into sewing for us. Even this chats are relevant. Happy New Year filled with family, love, health and sewing. Ps: loving you shopping frenzy admission... I admit to the same... must deal with this addiction of mine... This is Leila. Thank you for your encouragement. I am glad to know I am not the only one who experiences sewing "funks". When I heard you mention Mood Fabrics, I decided to visit their website. I have been looking for some navy fabric and some black fabric to make pants for myself. They have beautiful fabric!!! Well, I found some that I think will work for me and ordered it. They prices were very reasonable (they were on sale). Not being able to see the fabric before I buy is taking some getting used to, but I think that's probably gonna be the norm for me now. Thanks again, between you and Joy, you keep us going!

Dang. You've had a horrible December. I'm sorry that you've had to deal with so much at once. It's great to start 2021 with a video from you. Another thing that helps to ease back into sewing is to make something simple. 1960s dress patterns are perfect for that. Working with your hands is imperative to keeping sadness at bay. Hi Viv! I am so sorry that you had that nasty fall and I am so glad that you didn't break anything. Thank you so much for your inspirational chat, I needed that I have been so not into sewing for too long now and I think my problem is that I am to caught up with utube etc , and you have made me think that I should put the 'phone down and get on with something else- will let you know how it goes - thank you! Your quote is from the wonderful Scottish Bard Robert Burns, so many of the things we say nowadays comes from his poems and we often don't even know. I too had a nasty fall in September for no apparent reason and hit my head very hard on a concrete sidewalk. Two days later I was sitting having my morning cup of tea when I realised I was having a heart attack, I am married to a retired doctor and after he had taken my blood pressure and pulse he took me to emergency and I was admitted to the C-ICU and turns out I had also had a stroke, fortunately I have no lasting symptoms of a stroke and the Neurologist thinks it is a mystery and advised to get on with my life which I am trying to do. Sorry about the long ramble. Fond wishes for a healthy and safe 2021. Trish

I don’t sew in the dead of winter or heat of summer because my sewing room gets way too cold/hot. Luckily, I also knit, spin, weave, cross stitch, so I fill my time. I managed to get my index finger with the potato peeler on Christmas, so that is hindering things a bit (you do not want to stab your cut finger with the tip of a knitting needle; trust me). I am so glad you were not seriously injured. I agree with your suggestion to look through patterns, look through fabric; I have to do it with knitting sometimes. Have a wonderful New Year; hopefully things will turn around for all of us soon.

Great encouragement, thanks! I'm hairbrained so always seem to have three or four projects going at once. I can solve a problem on one, then move on to another. I have three sewing projects right now. As long as I'm making some kind of forward progress, even if it's thinking over a problem, I'm happy. When I'm in a funk, there's always patterns on Ebay!

I just watched the video where you challenged people to state their sewing goal publicly, so I'm going to do that here. I have made a jacket out of an old patchwork quilt that was very damaged, but I couldn't throw away. I have repaired a lot of it, but need to do more. Also need to get the lining in. I will finish that crazy thing in January so I can wear it while it's cold.

Nice to see you again girl! If you feel you have deadlines, then often a hobby turns into a job no matter how much you enjoy doing it and jobs take a lot of discipline. Something else to consider - If you feel you are getting into a deep funk that lasts weeks, and you are not able to do things you enjoy, then this is real depression. See your doctor, you might need medication for a situational depression, that will pass more easily with help, and it is better to do this than let it drag on for months. This is not uncommon for women especially as hormonal changes are happening during the 50's. into the 60's (I used to work in women's health research) This funk must be taken seriously. So sorry to hear of your accidents and subsequent injuries. It is the pits for sure. I had a heart attack this year, and it takes weeks to feel better even though it was considered mild. I started mild exercise, and rather than sewing have been doing crochet while watching videos, movies etc. and making small sewing projects for Christmas gifts as I was not going into stores this year. We shall all feel better I promise. Things will get better. There is light at the end of the tunnel with vaccinations coming on board, Be kind, be calm and stay safe all. Hugs everyone.

It was so good to see your smiling face. I’m so sorry you have been through such pain, but happy you survived without any serious complications. I think your pep talk regarding going through a sewing dry spell is good for many of us to hear. It helps to know others go through it. Lately I have been working on bathing suit tops and bottoms for my daughter. Well, working is a relative term in this case. My daughter recently got her Dive Master and teaching certificates for scuba diving and she needs lots of swimwear). I almost have one top and bottom done, but I’m not happy with the results-puckers where I don’t want them. Of course, we don’t even know if they’ll fit because she lives in L.A. and I’m in Michigan. Instead of pushing through, I keep tracing out new patterns when I should be sending her some prototypes. I needed your talk, for sure! I love your jumpsuit, but the last jumpsuit I wore was in the 70’s. Yes, visiting the loo was a pain at the age of twenty. I can’t imagine doing it now! My bladder is just not that strong, nor are my muscles and joints that flexible. I would have to put a drop-seat in the back like the old cowboys in the movies had. That would be a fashion statement!

Well I have that feeling. Fell on steeps. Broke my tail bone. Sore sore Then pneumonia hit and four days later covid. The hardest part is my sewing room is so bad I can't even stand to go in. When I do I don't know where to start. I keep saying tomorrow but it never comes. Want to start sewing again so will have to get my act together. Hopefully I'll start something soon. So glad your here again

Adorable jumpsuit. I love your hair. Thankyou for talking about sewing and the situations in life that can present delays in doing what you love. Yes. I have the fabric and pattern an notions on the end of couch I have been looking at for weeks. Thankyou I will just have to cut it Out before I go mad. So sad about your injuries. Praying to Jehovah you heal quickly.

Oh my gosh, Viv…my story is similar! I retired at 62 with lots of hobbies to fill the time between travel with my husband. Sewing stopped for me during menopause when my body took on the shape of a bag of doorknobs. I used to be thin and I just made the pattern and it fit! Now alteration has become so complicated that I just say “the heck with it.” So I started quilting. One morning while cutting fabric I ran over my finger with my rotary cutter taking off a huge piece of my finger tip. When we returned home from urgent care I asked my husband to discard the piece of finger laying on my sewing table! I couldn’t do much for quite a while. I have been told by my loving husband that I take the steps too fast. I run up and I run down. One afternoon, as I was running down, I slipped in my stocking feet and came down hard on my hip on the edge of the step. I could have hurt my back or head. I am so thankful I was able to get up off the step with a bruise on my hip. You are so right. Best to just move on to the next day. Be strong, have faith and don’t give up. Also, I have found a hobby isn’t fun any more when it becomes a “have to.”Anxious to see your fabric when the time is right.

What an amazing series of woes-.feel better soon! I’m not a huge-volume seamstress like you, but I LOVE fabric! When I used to go buy some and my husband would give me “that” look I would remind him that if I’d spent the afternoon at the movies (like I had at the fabric store) I would have probably spent the same amount of money with nothing to show for it but the enjoyment of the afternoon. So there!!

Glad to hear thar you are ok after your accidents😧 I to have lost my sewjo this year ....... have done literally nothing since April. I organise a group of six sewing buddies which meet up monthly. Most of them have been busy finishing UFO’s. I haven’t even done that! But as all contact in person has been impossible in the UK this year I have decided to set a Challenge to the group, and to give me a chance to get back into sewing too. Our group comes together to create mixed media textiles, using paper, paint, even tomato purée tins! The challenge I have set is monthly. It will have a different theme each month with two “must have elements” . The Monthly Page has a maximum size of 6” so it is a manage Challenge, and to use what we have in our stash! 😉The overall idea is to revisit sewing skills you have, and add new ones such a new embroidery stitch and when we get back together it will be exciting to see how everyone has interpreted the same task. It’s a bit like all following a standard recipe, they will all be the same, but different at the same time depending on how you interpreted the instructions . 😀 It’s great to see you back😀 I think you are right, let’s not be to hard on ourselves. It’s been a difficult year, we’ve had time to reflect, but now the time has come to take up a Challenge 👍😃 Happy New Year, welcome 2021🥳

So glad to see your video, Vivmom. Your words really resonated with me...along with "fear of failure" is what stops me from sewing. What if what I'm making doesn't fit or I don't like it? So I don't sew, but I do watch sewing vlogs, have foam boards coming to wrap my fabric on, tidied up the sewing room, so I'm still in the game. You gave me encouragement to keep trying to sew. I'm so sorry about your injuries and hope you have no lasting effects especially with your back. I like your longer hair. I hope 2021 bring you and your family good health and happiness (and more sewing videos) :-)

I'm so glad you didn't break anything when you fell. As we get older it takes us longer to heal. Pre-covid just going to the fabric store and looking and touching all the fabric was always enough to make me happy. Our local fabric store is still open but since they have to restrict the number of customers in the store they really want you in and out as quickly as possible. I know sometimes I really want to sew but the thought of getting the fabric and pattern pressed, then laying everything out, and finally pinning and cutting just seems overwhelming. But I know I will get past that and get on with it. Yesterday I made a reusable tea bag, a small but very satisfying project. Hearing your story about getting out of your jumpsuit just reminded me of the little ones at the daycare I worked at trying to get out of their clothes to use the toilet before it was too late. Happy New Year! We are going to sweep 2020 right out the door on the stroke of midnight. I totally understood what you said about your parents. I also miss my parents but am so glad they don't have to live through this.

Boy, you really spoke to me! Instead of actually sewing, I'm pinning Pinterest sewing ideas on boards for next Christmas, and am looking through my vintage rag doll patterns - I think a little doll is about as much as I'm up for. And I've done the fall/slide down the front steps - that was 40+ years ago. I just try to keep as active as possible, but recognize my shortcomings and the need for rest and repair when necessary. A little rest today means lots more energy and optimism tomorrow.

Must be something in the air! I have been buying fabric too. Before the holidays I was polishing my nails this beautiful red color and thought would'nt a red dress be so fun to wear. So Fabric Mart.com was calling my name and one red piece of fabric was not enough. Three reds pieces and several pieces of other colors and 40 yards later, I completed my order! Express shipping and 2 days later I have the most gorgeous fabric ever. This is what happens when you're 72 yrs. old and you get a bit bored!

Oh Viv, this was a great chat. So sorry you had that fall and cut to your hand. Everything you said was completely true about sewing. Imagine those prairie wives having to hand sew all those button holes, and maybe unpick when the stitches didn't turn out right, especially when they too were having a bad year!🤦‍♀️ I applaud your honest comment about your parents, mine have passed too, and I really dont think they would have coped mentally and emotionally with all that is going on in the world these days. All the best I hope things are better for all of us in 2021.

My "can't" is crippling me in all aspects of my creativity ! Painting & sewing! I look at a blank piece of paper or canvas and I go blank & panic. I have fabric out with a pattern on it and it just sits! Once again, I feel like I am going to ruin that fabric . I can not sew or do anything until my house is clean. I am NUTS! LOL! I understand that. I was in hospital until End of Nov. I had so much paperwork to file and after having had brain surgery and follow up treatments, my concentration has been lacking. I am OCD and can not enjoy sewing when I am not organised and my mind is racing around with chores I need to do. Wanting to sew does help motivate me to get housework done. When we create, we tend to feel pleased. The sewing mojo will come back soon if not forced. Let's not beat ourselves up...we expect too much of ourselves. I love these videos. My Mom sewed all of our clothes years ago and now I enjoy my grand-daughters wearing what I make. Enjoy every moment. 2021 has to be better! Good health to you all!

Misery loves company. I have a canvas sitting on my easel. Want to paint a single rosebud for a baby shower on the 9th of January. I’m thinking about pulling some lace from my stash and painting over it for the background but nothing is happening.🙁. For house cleaning, back when I was able I would clean one room a day so never got behind. Now I have to have it cleaned but like you I can never embark on a sewing, painting project unless my house is clean. Hope we both will be motivated soon.

I took my machine in to be cleaned and some small (I thought) problem with needle position adjusting. I was told I could just keep using it til it went out cuz it couldn't be fixed. Cleaned it though. Then the owner came in and told me he would let me have a top of the line (without in special walking foot and laser pen. I bought it out of frustration and he knocked off 1,000 dollars. Now I somehow bent the needle threaded so for 12 95 and free labor he will replace it. I'm 73, diabetic and can't even get the free tutorials that usually come with your machine because of Civic. I took out My old machine and kept on sewing, don't know how long it will last but for now, I'm on my way. I'm working on a quilt for me grandson, but I want to learn to sew knits. If this pandemic doesn't end soon, I'll be making tents to wear. Sorry to vent. Hugs
