It is easy to explai why it would be busy during summer. Nowadays there is a train going from Zwolle to Schiphol, but before (and still mainly so) If you take a train from the North towards Utrecht, or Eindhoven and south of there, the Inter City, stops after Zwolle only in Amersfoort, before Utrecht.

I was just thinking how odd it is that you are Polish , speaking English in a Dutch city. Amersfoort I wonder who Amers was and why he built a fort. Maybe Amers refers to a town and this used to be where the fort was...

The Amer is a small river and a foort is a place where you can wade through the river to the other end. (also known as ford, voort, vorde, fort). A military fort did not exist yet when the cities in the Netherlands got their name. There were some castles, though. So you have a lot of place names ending at -burg and borg. There were earlier military establishments made by the Romans here. But most of these placenames have been lost or severly altered. Voorburg was Forum Hadriani and Utrecht was (Ultimo) Trajectum, also meaning a place where you could cross the river by wading through it, Nijmegen was Noviomagus, novio meaning New in latin and magus meaning market in Celtic. Some places have other origins, like Haarlem, that came from Heruhalem, meaning house in an open space in the forest in old Germanic before the language Dutch even existed.
