How to overcome anxiety when riding balls-out on a downhill / eBoard? My answer = a couple beers, a half a Xanax, and some chill riding tunes played at max volume on my earbuds. (The beers are only required to numb the pain of crashing)

Your tip on keeping your feet at equal angles and pointing your toes forward was incredibly helpful. The more forward your toes are pointed, the less effect they will have on turning the trucks which equates to less wobbles. So that's why those high-speed downhillers always have both feet pointed forward. I recently bought my first E-board, a Backfire Ranger X2. I have so much to learn.

In Hang Gliding we have the same wobble on higher performance gliders, slowing down makes it go away and loosening a tight grip. PIO is what its called- pilot induced occilations.

That was very helpful. Great pick Algorithm. I was just thinking if I might have tighten up too much just to avoid any possibilitiy of wobbles, not helpful for slow maneuvers around the city. I still have a kicktail on my short board, but I give the loose a try.

B o b b y E l i e / Shadley Joanis. in my experience you're right. when I'm bombing a hill and get wobbles, it's because I'm tense. once you relax, your body relaxes and can absorb bumps or imperfections in the road that can cause speed wobbles. if you're stiff, you're more likely to eat shit imo.

This is exactly what I was thinking... I rode my Boosted Board for the first time last night, and I got the wobbles and wiped out a few times... At first I felt like it was speed wobbles, but then I began to think it might be a combination of other things. Until I get the hang of it, I may be a bundle of nerves; I need to practice, and learn to not think about it so much, and let my body take over.

Today going down a new bridge with more tailwind than I thought sped me up way past comfortable. Picked up a speed wobble & wiped out. Thought it was the bennett trucks but I am sure you are right: Anxiety prevented me from standing 'like a block', low centre of gravity, the way you show. I will try picking up more speed in small increments to prevent wobble the way you suggest. Thanks a lot, I am sure you sussed it.

What I do whilst carving/cruising/speed riding, I keep my left foot forward (I skate goofy) and keep it vertical facing the way the board is facing while I keep my right foot horizontal to the board. This allows me to not have to worry about loosing my footing while rotating my foot but still keep my ability to turn. It also really helps in preventing speed wobble, I have never had speed wobble with this stance the whole 4 weeks I have been carving/cruising/speed riding (I dont know if this is a common stance but I thought I should let people know)

I'd say just keep practicing. If you do it enough, it will start to feel more natural. I used to focus a lot on my front trucks, and I noticed at speed they start to wobble and I would get nervous seeing them wobble. I realized that a little wobble is normal and I try to look far ahead on the road instead of down at my feet. Also imagining I'm a car that steers with it's front wheels (putting most my weight near front bolts) made a big difference.

I'm a total noob at longboard, but what I have figured out is that if I intentionally bail, then technically I am the cause of the wreck. So I just ride-out through the nerves and it seems to work. If I'm going to wreck, I don't want to be the cause of it. I guess its a zen thing.

Man, two weeks ago I stupidly fall without any protection. Was a small sloopy, just a bicycle tunnel which pass under on street. nothing broke, but on the first week my hand sweeled a lot, cant move my shoulder, elbow was a mess... Today I was outside again. Any small down/sloop that I passed I was afraid and breaks almost all the way...Them I sit, watched your video. Gained the confidence, I was with all protection (although I would like that my wrist protection also cover my fingers). Everything goes well and I reallize I just fall because I was without protection for the first time (I will never do it again!!!) and got afraid.

I decided to anyhow and caught what I'm now dubbing fear wobbles and whipe the fck out. 1 min in my ride 1 fall ended my session for the day. But this has helped me. I think I'm gonna keep it on flat for awhile tho. Work on my stability.

You are right about leaning forward, but you have missed something I was told when I started skating (more than 40 years ago): make the back truck MUCH tighter than the front. Also, I think the best way to 'image' yourself is as being suspended from a line that goes through your shoulders. Hang loosely 'from yourself'. Sounds weird, but it works. But once it happens, you are in the hands of fate, and the best thing you can do (because it is a runaway feedback loop) is concentrate very hard on doing NOTHING. Any attempt to correct makes it worse.

you have the right idea but having all of your weight over your front truck is the best way to prevent the speed wobbles because if your weight is on the back truck board physically reacts different and their is no way to prevent speed wobbles if your weight is on the back truck except for tightening trucks etc. its not from your body being unstable

Yikes... I think my natural instinct when riding is to put my weight towards the back. That would allow my front wheels to ride over any little pebbles or rocks, preventing me from flying forward and jacking up the front of my face, and making it worse than what it is already.

Three issues with your board that i think might be a disservice to the purpose of this video. 1 single motor drive. 2 Double king pin trucks. 3 the deck is straight and smooth. 1 first problem with single motor e-skate is that the board will naturally want to turn into opposite direction of the driven wheel, eg. your skate i right turn bias. This means you have to compensate by leaning ever so slightly into the left, doing this a at high speeds, a slip or a small dump mean the board will want to go right no matter what you do, the aggressiveness of that will be determine by the motor torque. 2 double king pins are very, very, very soft, pound for pound those will require less force to do a given radius circle than one with a single kingpin designed for these kind of boards. Taking into account what i wrote above in point 1, those trucks being ever so soft, the rear wheels are locked by the motor into a "turning" state. also any input from the board does not travel into the rider very well, it feels like you're riding a cloud, you're not sure where your feet are in relation to the direction the board wants to go and thus you cant compensate correctly to make the wobbles go away, you're only chance is to ride out and slow down gently to regain control. 3 It is common practice to use board that have a "inward" curvature, the deck is like a very shallow half-pipe. This makes a board with a thinner deck as strong as thicker straight deck. This curvature also helps you "dig in" your heels or toes when doing turns, it also induces a natural self balancing force up through your legs since the normal force of you feet will be pointing towards the center of mass. Also grip-tape goes a long way providing additional friction between your feet and the deck, you feel more "planted" into the board. I'm not trying to be annoying and i understand some of these point are hard to visualise what they mean in physical terms, but you see i'm a mechanical engineer and i own and ride an E-sk8 on a regular basis and that problem, speed wobble, i found to be easily overcome with the correct board/parts/attitude. Safe rides.

On this board I'd probably hit the brake, which can be pretty sketchy if done incorrectly. I've painfully ejected myself more than once while breaking because I was standing too high, and the board slowed down too quickly as I kept moving forward. To brake correctly I have to squat as low as possible, hold the board with one hand, lean back a little, and ever so gently push the trigger in the opposite direction (it's very sensitive.) Ideally I'd lose the offroad wheels, get street wheels, longboard gloves and learn to powerslide, as I don't think the brake should be trusted much. If the drive band were to snap, there would be no more brake!
