Dimash is always on my list of recommendations, and you Dears always represent! This performance by Dimash of the 1989 Japanese classic at the Tokyo Jazz festival in 2021 truly shows this expressive talent. This is the second time I've seen him perform this song, the first in Chinese (link at the end of the video).
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Dimash Kudaibergen performing for the first time in Japanese "Ikanaide”.

Hi, I have been waiting for your analysis and comments on Dimash's 2nd version of this song for some time. Finally, it has arrived and I really appreciate your honest admiration on his work behind this version as he had to master J Japanese vowel sounds after mastering Chinese version which he has been singing on big stages quite a few times by now. Being a Japanese person, I can guarantee to anyone who does not speak our language that he was incredibly authentic and yet really sophisticated in his own way. I for od knew he would this original song some time and he did it so majestically. He perhaps made Koji Tamaki proud as a composer of this heart-breaking song.

That vocal range and control is quite stunning, a fabulous rendition and worthy of any audio collection. The cross between pop and opera is completely blurred, your description of the breathy, floating opening section as being "fluffy" was so very much a perfect description. I'm going to have to delve further into Dimash's catalogue and maybe tiptoe back into my opera collection - that may not sound odd to you but, as an ageing blues/jazz/rock aficionado (massive Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck and Pink Floyd fan) I can assure you that most of my friends, even the very close ones, would be amazed at scope of my musical tastes. Your channel has been such a breath of fresh hearing, I may know the work in question but I'd never considered the vocal nuances and techniques in the production of that work before, It's a bit like returning to school or college and finding that all of the stuff I'd learned had been done in a rather superficial way, skimming over the surface and ignoring or being unaware of the essence underneath that gave it grandeur. The opening section of Ikanaide gave me goosebumps, I've still got them 15 minutes later, I think that right now I'll take your advice and listen to the original, uninterrupted, and get them again.

Hi! I think the main challenge Dimash faced here had to have been the differences in emotive dynamics between the two versions. If you have ever heard Kodji Tamaki (the composer) sing the original, you will have noticed that when Jackie Cheung wrote the Chinese lyrics he toned it down by reducing the impact of the song’s pathos. Perhaps the Japanese musical ethos is a bit more openly emotional than the Chinese one. So even though Dimash has known the original Japanese version for quite some time {There was a video of him in an airport where he declared to a reporter that “Ikanaide” was his favorite song to sing.), he apparently waited to perform it in front of a Japanese audience until he was absolutely certain of his interpretation. The 2021 Tokyo Jazz Festival seems to have presented a perfect opportunity for him to publicly celebrate the song and its composer. Yes, he did win several awards in China for the Mandarin version of the song; however, every Japanese reviewer that viewed “Ikanaide” on FaceBook gave him effusive praise for this deeper, more emotional and far more Japanese rendering of the song. Even the original Japanese librettist posted on his Instagram account that he had never in his life expected to hear a non-native sing his language with such beauty and perfection.

Amen! I lived in Japan for 10 years and am fluent in the language, and I agree. The differences between the Chinese and Japanese versions are well-handled by Dimash, while at the same time keeping the core - the heart - of the song true in both versions. All the Japanese friends with whom I've shared the link for Ikanaide have also been effusive in their praise for his talent and his beautiful delivery of Japanese, echoing the comments of the Japanese librettist.

I disagree. Dimash's version sounds like a vocal exhibition. And amazing it is. Tamaki's version however exudes emotion on a real level beyond just vocal flexing. This song is all about pain, which is harder to register when Dimash is showing off his vocal range

Those notes he _doesn't_ sing at the very end are absolutely everything. His expression, the almost reluctant way he seems almost unable or unwilling to find any more words or even sounds. He's failed. His lover went away, in spite of all the ways he pleaded with them to stay. He's mourned it with those soft little runs, and then there's just... nothing left. Only regret and silence as the music finishes. Just breathtaking.

Yes! Those pauses! Dimash has holding the audience in bated breath, edge of seat {Oh God! What's he going to do next?! } anticipatory mode down to perfection. 🤣👍Truly a Master Class. It's hard to see how he can improve on perfection - but he keeps doing it! Interesting comments about the demands of vowel / language / tonal shifts. I've heard people talking about muscle memory in vocal production but you seem to be talking about 'resonance memory' - or is it essentially the same thing? I vaguely recall some practical tutoring around this- a VEEEERY Long time ago, in Choir, when we were taught to sing in: English, Latin, German & French. Am only just now appreciating the level of skill that Choir Mistress had - and attempted to impart to us ignorant - and only vaguely interested - teenagers. Most of whom had vain dreams about 'being discovered' as Pop Stars of course, heedless of the incredible foundation we were receiving.😆

👉 Hello Elisabeth-Sunshine, two weeks ago, on April 16th, I was in Prague at the Dimash concert. After two long years the concert finally took place. I'm still flashed and excited. I cried and laughed, sang and cheered. Dimash sings every single song brilliantly and flawlessly, sometimes like in the video (Olimpico), sometimes with new arrangements and variations, new riffs and runs. This (often spontaneous) creativity distinguishes Dimash. He rarely sings a song in the same way. It's stunning and overwhelming. He also interacts with the audience in a beautiful, emotional and also funny way. There is a real connection. I never wanted it to end. I absolutely have to go to the next concert. (There are many videos of the concert in Prague on KZbin.)

Thanks for another brilliant analysis and reaction. Loved, loved, loved it! 😘 Regarding Dimash’s Japanese performance, a Japanese reactor said that Dimash’s pronunciation was perfect. It was as good as a native speaker’s. It shows how much of a perfectionist Dimash is and how many hours he must have spent on his pronunciation and delivery. In addition, Goro Matsui, who wrote the lyrics to “Ikanaide” praised Dimash’s performance and said: “I’ve heard ‘Ikanaide’ sung by foreign singers in their native language many times. Even though they all sing great, none of them seemed to quite capture the sound/reverberation and meaning of the original lyrics and perceive the emotions between the lines. In this song, the phrase ~ Ah, ikanaide~ is repeated several times in the chorus. Although they are the same exact words, each line has a different meaning. “But this is the first time anyone has sung it so beautifully in Japanese. I happened to find Dimash singing “Ikanaide” by chance. The first thing that surprised me was his crystal clear tone and his expressive voice that conveys the lyrics of the song.”

Welcome back Elizabeth. We Miss you reaction to dimash. That last note and then silant, his expression always, always brought tears to My eyes. Every time. No exception, even now. The lyric for this One is different. Ikanaide means “dont go, please dont go” beautiful reaction as always and im always waiting, that One day you Will react to this. Have you react to “stranger” yet. I would Love to start with The original versuon in New wave. Followed by The stranger in Chinas super shine Brother rendition. Same song but different, so so different. In prague, he sung this song and start it in chinese, and the second part in Japanese. Back to chinese yo Japanese. That switch between two different and difficult languages, he makes it too easy. This man, his taoent, his controlled and dedication is unparallel. Nothing and no One could touch where he is, and what he Cam.

Dear Elisabeth, I'm glad you came back after a long hiatus😍 I'm deeply enchanted by your detailed analysis of Ikanaide, thank you 💖 April 9, 2022 I was at Dimash's concert in Düsseldorf and he sang there only the Chinese version of this song, not the Japanese one (at concerts in Dubai and Prague, he sang mixed), but still this piece, and of course all the concert was a magical experience🥰🥰🥰 Love flowed from the stage to the audience, but it also flowed from us to the stage🔥 Dimash was charming, dignified and playful in turns 😁 He sang sensational, he presented some songs in a new way, it was regrettable that it only lasted 3 hours, because even 13 hours would not be enough 😉 I hope, You'll go to his next performances👍 Hugs and kisses from Poland🇵🇱💋 Kate

Thank you for your reaction Elizabeth!! Kōji Tamaki is a Japanese singer-songwriter of Ikanaide and Dimash performed a previous version in Chinese called Autumn strong Dimash is a master of the story-telling, his voice makes you feel deep emotions and takes you there where that song happened. Beautiful!! A Japanese reactor mentioned that his softness with the hard consonants is a function of how well Dimash understands and has learned the mechanics (tongue and jaw placement) of the Japanese language. It's something very difficult for native English speakers to do. ❤️🎤🔝🔝🌹🌹👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

If you go to the original video, I'm pretty sure English captions are available. The lyrics are heartbreaking, though Dimash conveys the emotional message so well, I rarely bother reading the captions anymore when I listen to this because the vocal delivery is sufficient to convey the full story for me now that I've read the captions once or twice. (Also, subtle nuances tend to get lost in translation, so even though the English lyrics are moving, I know they probably don't come close to capturing the full meaning of the original Japanese lyrics, so I depend on Dimash's vocals to deliver that added depth of emotion.)

Thank you so much, Elizabeth, for returning to Dimash with this particular performance. It's stayed in my top Dimash performances that demonstrate his mastery of vocal interpretation. For me, it shows both the sophistication of his technical development, and the growing artistic nuance with which he makes different style and dynamic choices. The Japanese language sounds like it was made for Dimash to sing. The breath in both his onsets and offsets, the way he connects the phrases, and the beauty of the composition itself, all combine to create a stunning work of art. I love this one a lot, and have been hoping you would analyze it someday. Thank you again!

Dimash does a wonderful tribute to the origin song and its moving emotional pleas of a man in love and despair. His interpretation captures the feeling and theme of the original. It's a gut wrenching song if you've witnessed the original artist's performance.

The original is about a person losing his loved one over death. But Dimash made this into his own. It's a cover but no longer just a cover. I'm not a huge fan of this type of vocal but such a majestic performance.

Thank you for this beautiful analysis. I love listening to you and watching your awe and delight at our beautiful Dimash. How anyone can not be in awe of this performance I do not know. I love the sort of ebb and flow he gives it, just floating in and out so beautifully. There are just not the right adjectives to describe him. Another vocal coach tried to say that lots of people can learn to sing like Dimash. She is so wrong. They might be able to learn some of his techniques if they put in the hours and dedication, but no one else can do ALL that Dimash can do in a performance. Just the feeling, emotion and expressiveness in his performance is so unique. His ability to paint his vocals with his hands, and the way he moves, before you even take into account the staggeringly difficult vocal techniques he uses. Dimash has been completely dedicated to his art since he was 5. And he also has that something special that not many others have, a truly genuine, awesome heart and soul full of love that flows from him into every word. Japanese reactors also say his Japanese pronunciation is excellent which really amazes them as it is a difficult language to learn. Please don’t be so long to do your next reaction to our awesome Dimash 💞
