Truth, I saw them 3rd row front and center in the early days and Steve would, play the keyboard, sing and do a gymnastic double leg kick up in the air behind him with his hands on the keyboard. Incredible.

Also, don't forget Robby Steinhardt... his unique powerful baritone voice and his ability to lay out awesome screams... plus his virtuoso 🎻 playing... Steve Walsh and Robby Steinhardt gave Kansas a special duo of voices that made the band special... (Not to mention the songwriting genius of Kerry Livgren... the power of Phil Ehart on drums, the thump of Dave Hope on bass, and the prowess of Rich Williams on guitar... the original Kansas was just a prog rock juggernaut... 🎻🎸🎙️🥁🎹🌪️🌾

To his detriment, Walsh sang full out every night while on tour, some simple voice training could have helped him keep is voice more intact over the years. It is such a pleasure to be in a forum with those who “know”! Steve Walsh always knew where to take the next note. His phrasings or articulations, if you will, were the soul of the songs. That little “grit” that Eli refers to is a gift from above. Phil Ehart said it best when he said, Steve Walsh needs to be singing Kerry Livgren’s songs. It was the perfect match.

I went to college in St. Joseph, Missouri in the 70s, where Steve grew up. I think I read somewhere he sang in a Catholic choir as a teenager. Missouri is a 21 state for liquor, and at that time you could cross the Missouri river into Kansas and get 3.2 beer if you were 18 or older. There was a bar in Wathena KS which served Coors at 35 cents per draw where a band called USA played often. Once in a blue moon, Steve Walsh would show up and play keyboards with them. He didn't sing, he just played keyboards. He did this at least until Leftoverture was released, and then I think he may have moved to Atanta. I don't know his connection with the band USA, but maybe they were from his White Clover days. Just guessing.

In a lot of ways Steve Walsh is a forgotten super-singer. Kansas, for that matter, does not get the publicity other 70's bands get these days. Which is too bad because they were so fantastic in singing, harmony, playing, arrangements…every bit as interesting as queen, but they probably lacked the personality of a Freddie Mercury to keep them in the public eye. Just some good ol' Kansas boys making incredible music. Thanks for reminding us how great a singer Steve and the band was.

Unfortunately, his voice deteriorated in the late 1980's and through 90's. His voice got better in the 2000's again, but he never completely recovered his amazing voice from his younger days. Though I never knew him, I got to watch Steve in all of his early grade school & HS bands. He was a senior when I was a freshman at the same HS. Our school was blessed with an excellent concert choir teacher, a man name Marvin Ginch. Steve took lessons from him all through HS, as did my oldest sister who sings like an angel. Should've heard his band before Kansas, White Clover. Had a second keyboardist/singer that had greater range than Steve, & was more skilled on his B-3 as well. Also the guitarist looked like a shorter version of Jimi Hendrix & played amazingly like him as well, but unfortunately lost some fingers to a circular saw accident. Thanks for your vid!

I currently can't hit a C5 in a connected voice to save my life (Can barely hit an A4 a connected voice, and can barely hit a C5 in disconnected falsetto) and I've taken vocal lessons again for a year with a competent instructor who can sing songs like Jane by Jefferson Starship. I also went to two ENTs and two SLPs (voice therapists) in an attempt to find out what's going on and to recover lost range. I used to get to a B4 or C5 in a connected head voice in exercises when I was younger, and used to get to an E5 or F5 in falsetto when younger, but something gradually occurred (one of the ENTs thinks it's a paresis of one fold). Anyway, my point is results will vary. If it ain't meant to be it ain't meant to be. No sense in torturing myself about having a limited upper range, and I don't want to get involved with vocal fold augmentation injections, which I think are potentially risky although, I'm told augmentation injections could help me with high notes. Even before I lost range I don't think songs like this one were doable for me even with training. I could get to a C5 at home if I worked up to it but not sustain it. If performing in front of people I would stick to a G 4 or lower, even when I was younger. Maybe I'm the outlier and everyone other light baritone like myself who takes lessons with a competent instructor will develop an upper range like Ken Tamplin or Micky Thomas, Stevie Wonder, etc.? I doubt the latter, who but knows. I'd say give lessons a year in order to find out.

@@EliPrinsensHVTVocalsthe ENT who said he thought I had slight weakness (paresis) on one side was the 2nd opinion. The first ENT's only comment on my folds was that the folds were bowed with an oval opening when demonstrating disconnected falsetto (not regular voice), but I think that may have always been the case with falsetto for me. The first ENT thought my loss of range could be muscle tension dysphonia and/or atrophy but so far nothing I've done has resulted in any recovery of lost upper range notes .

I have always thought that Freddy, Robert and Steve Walsh were the top 3, all the rest are in second!

In his prime Steve Walsh had a great singing voice. He would argue that Paul Rodgers of Bad Company was much better but..........

Paul was an inspiration to him (and a lot of singers). I still love Walsh's tone and emotional delivery.

Talented but he never acknowledged the GIVER of the voice he was given!

Sorry but I don't hear anything wrong with "lay my weary head", didn't sound like Elmer fudd to me...I honestly don't get the critique here.

Dude that is totally untrue, what are you even saying? You have no evidence or basis to say that. The reason Kansas picked Steve is because *he could already sing*

Steve sings the melody and the high harmony in the original recording. Robbie sings the second harmony.

Unfortunately Steve Walsh is not in Kansas because he's in a geriatric ward in an old age home. Don't worry though he's entertaining the old fogies by singing his dust in the wind hit. Kidding aside, STEVE WAS MY HERO. I'M 61. WHEN I WAS 16, MY FRIENDS THOUGHT THEY WERE COOL CUZ THEY LISTENED TO ZEPPELIN, KISS, NAZERATH,AND OTHER HARDER EDGE SOUNDING BANDS. WELL, I JOINED THE COLUMBIA HOUSE TAPE AND RECORD CLUB AND ONE OF MY FIRST PURCHASES WAS KANSAS .NOT ZEPPELIN,OR ALL THEE OTHER BANDS. WHEN I FIRST HEARD KANSAS, I KNEW THEY WERE "MY"BAND. THEIR MUSIC TO ME WAS SUPERIOR TO ANY OTHER GROUP. I WALKED AROUND NOT ONLY THINKING BUT KNOWING I HAD A MORE SUPERIOR,MORE MATURE TASTE IN ROCK MUSIC. I STILL FEEL THAT WAY. MY FRIENDS WOULD LAUGH AT ME CUZ I LISTEN TO A ROCK BAND WITH A VIOLINIST. IT WASN'T COOL ! MY ASS ! AT 16, IT DID NOT MAKE ME ANGRY. WHY ? KANSAS MUSIC SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. PUT IT THIS WAY.. THERE ARE MILLIONS OF COVER BANDS DOING ZEPPELIN, AS WELL AS OTHER GROUPS LIKE THE WHO,ROLLING STONES,AND OTHERS BUT ITS RARE TO HEAR A COVER BAND DOING ALL OF KANSAS MUSIC . WHY ? CUZ YOU NEED TO BE A GREAT MUSICIAN. NOT GOOD,OR OK. BUT GREAT. EVERYONE IMMITATES L.ZEP. HOW MANY BANDS DO KANSAS AND DO THEM GREAT ? NOT MANY . SURE,THEY WILL TRY A FEW SONGS BUT IT SOUNDS JUVENILE MUSICALLY WISE . I AM NOT SAYING THEY ALL SUCK. BUT IT IS A VERY TALL ORDER TO FILL, PLAYING AND SOUNDING LIKE ONE OF THEE MOST TALENTED,GIFTED ROCK BANDS OF OUR TIME.
