In this video, I react for the first time to Tenacious D performing "Tribute”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. Jack Black and Kyle Gass are icons of comedy and it turns out they’re also serious musical talents!

You nailed it: the genius of Jack Black and Tenacious D is that they are always FULLY committed to the bit. Which includes both of them being legitimately brilliant musicians and songwriters. They're deadly serious about their extreme silliness, and few comedians (especially of their generations) have that kind of confidence. They've been a breath of fresh air to me for 25 years-and it really delighted me to see you take them so seriously as well. ❤

It's not. It's about "The Devil's Trill" by Giuseppe Tartini. Tenacious D pretty much just retell the story about Tartini hearing the devil play the greatest piece of music in the world in a dream and Tartini's attempt at recreating it was so inferior he considered it to be no more than a tribute.

Also, I dont know, but in my book this a capella is a reference to how they in found secret messages in music when you played the LP backwards, and suddenly clear as day you hear the word "Lucifer". Rock was considered the downfall of the youth ever since the seductive power of Elvis hips... I do think the religious right in the US tried to claim a backwards messages in stairway to heaven, something about satan and 666 and even coupled this to the Manson murders and stuff... this was long before I was born but I do think this part is refencing some of that stuff.

That _is_ Ben Stiller. He and Jack Black have been friends for a long time, and that's why JB finds his way into many of Stiller's projects. Likewise, Ben Stiller pops up in Black's stuff, too. In their movie, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, Ben Stiller plays a guitar store employee that sets them on the path to their goal for the movie.

Pretty sure others said it already but not only Ben wassisname Stiller was in this video but the Devil itself is Dave Grohl! Also the song is inspired by The Devil went down to Georgia, which is also a great song about battling a Devil. Nice interpretation of the tune, i think the main point of it is that in this spur of the moment when Satan challenged them, they just improvised the best song in the world and beat him. And then wrote "Tribute" to tell their tale since they don't remember how the "best song in the world" went. Cheers

Ahh, I love the bit you talk about feeling relaxed on the stage. Actually, thanks to your videos, last year I signed up for vocal lessons in my neighborhood music school and after only two months they had this talent show. It was a bunch of elementary schoolers, 30 year old me and one other adult vocal student. My teacher asked if I wanted to be involved, at that point I still couldn't sing at all, but thanks to you I knew singing was about having fun with your voice and also I was already doing theater, so I didn't mind being on stage. I figured I'd be fun and goofy and enjoy being there. I ended up doing a duet with my teacher, I sounded mostly terrible but I enjoyed the hell out of it and everyone loved it to bits! This is mostly thanks to your positive energy and joy about singing. I managed to forget about my self-consciousness and just tapped on my goofy side. It became one of my best memories ever. I had to drop out due to moving cities but I really want to go back to it again. Thank you for this channel and all your positive energy!

the concept of this song was inspired by Giuseppe Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata. He himself retold the story of the devil encounter as follows: One night, in the year 1713 I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I wished: my new servant anticipated my every desire. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain! The music which I at this time composed is indeed the best that I ever wrote, and I still call it the "Devil's Trill", but the difference between it and that which so moved me is so great that I would have destroyed my instrument and have said farewell to music forever if it had been possible for me to live without the enjoyment it affords me.

Who is going to inform her about the intent of her student? 😬 This reminds me that I did have the greatest rock riff in the world about 25+ years ago. We came up with some cool lyrics and played it 20 - 50 times. Everyone we played it for couldn't believe that it wasn't like some hidden track from a bad company / sabbath collaboration. lol. I did make that last part up, but it sounded like we all should have been listening to it like anything else. Not over complicated, and it came in an instant after practice when me and my buddy the drummer was f-n around. It left me with a real sense of the muse was about with some special sauce, and the band that was going to make it went to bed early or she was a fan of that weed, because it was a fantastic riff and chorus change. We were all decent musicians, but we played some bars and parties, but I wasn't ever going to take that song anywhere. The drummer was my best friend, so we made it, we played it. I knew it was special, so I guess i got selfish very quickly. (I am just now realizing that) Life took over and we kinda quit playing shortly after that. I picked my guitar up about 4 years ago for the first time since then, and was noodling around remembering one after the other, trying to play them with 20 year stiff fingers. (right pick hand was almost as precise as ever somehow) Then excitement and remembering came at the same speed as the song, and the beginning chord my hands went right too.. OR,,,, Wait. is it here it starts? huh, maybe like this; no not that, ok, play it back in my mind; dun dun baw, wait WTF? GONE.... NOTHING High on the hog was the song, and I remember half a verse and back, so 1 and 1/2 lyric verses, but there is no tempo to put it anywhere. 4 years ago and I have thought about it 20 times maybe, because it's depressing going to visit that I don't remember it. With me if I pick at it, i will bury it looking for it. One day something will trigger it and there it will be. And I better be around a fkn guitar when it does. lol. I will play it with guitar sounds with my mouth into my phone, and I won't care who is waiting on me for something. I aint losing it again. Hell i would give it away if I knew anyone anymore that was trying to do something. I felt like more when I played that song. And I played a lot of my favorite stuff that I dig playing. It was something special. Maybe it got repo-ed because it wasn't doing what it was born to do. lol. IDK.

I think Tribute is closer to Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata than the crossroads story. Tartini says the devil appeared to him in a dream and played him a song on his violin, and Tartini immediately woke up and wrote the best piece that he would ever create--and then swore that it was so inferior to what he'd heard in the dream that he would have smashed his violin and given up music altogether if he didn't have to rely on it to put food on his plate. (He couldn't remember the greatest song in the world, so he had to settle for a tribute.)

I believe, though could be one of those urban myths, that the original version of the song was actually referencing and included Stairway to Heaven as the "greatest song in the world" - there are videos floating around using a lot of the Stairway guitar work etc, but the Zeppelin denied the use of their copywritten song to an, at the time, unknown band, thus this album version was the one we all know and love. But again, could be a complete urban myth xD It is also worth noting, that if you're ever bored (or want a video series idea), they actually did a film, the soundtrack of which was their second album, called Pick of Destiny which is largely one big music video with some story in between connecting all the songs.

How about a "slightly" longer reaction to *Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog* (1x45 mins., or 3x15 mins.)? 😁 A next-to-no budget supervillain musical in three 15-minute parts by Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly, Avengers), which he made as sort of a sidequest during a few weeks of downtime inbetween bigger projects, and that got released as a free-to-watch mini webseries (it's also on KZbin)- with Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion.

I am not sure if someone has mentioned this.. the tribute song is stairway to heaven. It is based on these chords ''couldn't remember the best song in the world,... no.. this is just a tribute..'' Brilliant

Funny how I understood some of the things... I'm pretty stupid. My legal name is Cobalt Jester. It was a bet and I lost with three 8s.. I have to have this name for 3 years... It was always my game name. I chose it because even though both names have 2 syllables Cobalt has 3 strong letters. C o B al T. Jester is 2 syllables but its really just one Jessssstttttererrr... I do have annoying love of thye element Cobalt...

The man playing with black jack is Kyle gas, they are old friends and they did the movie together, its them together that make "tenacious D" One of their songs that i think you might have an interest in more so on the story telling side is "Ballad of Holleywood Jack and the rage cage" Its the story of how they went on their separate rise, jack rising to fame, and Kyle going down a path of sorrow, and then their reunion.

Never seen this broken down so well and on point. Very entertaining and educational. Subbed! p.s. I see you haven't reacted to Dire Straits - Sultans of Swings (Alchemy Live) yet. I would absolutely love it if you did! You might already know it, but I don't care, I just want the same treatment as here on that performance. Committed salute from The Netherlands!

On the night they met the demon, they played the greatest song ever played. At thr time of recording in the booth, they couldn't remember that song, so they played a tribute to that song.

For a good bit of fun, and pretty decent singing, most of Tenacious D's songs are great. Lots of Neil Diamond influences... And of course you really should watch the Pick of Destiny. it's soooo stupid, but also really good. Here's hoping we get more of the D on here.

This is actually about the music piece "The Devil's Trill" (The Violin Sonata in G minor) by Giuseppe Tartini. Tartini had a dream where the devil played the greatest piece of music Tartini had ever heard. When he woke up he tried to write it down but he thought the piece he had written was so awful in comparison that he called it a mere tribute.

I just thought of something you should react to... "Songs of Yesterday" by Free. Paul Rodgers has a great Blues voice and his vocal on that song is very cool.

That is a great interpretation of the song that I haven't heard before, very smart! Another one is that this song actually has a lot of elements that are inspired a lot by Led Zeppelin and specifically by Stairway to Heaven (the structure of the song, the dynamics, even the ending), which is considered by many to be the greatest rock song ever.
@amrayos

The ending resembles Stairway to Heaven but can also be the begining of The Pretender (with Dave Grohl being the demon)

When the demon came, the song the first thing that came to their heads. THAT was the greastest song in the world. Sadly, they don't remember what they song, so they are now just making a tribute to it.

That other guy is the one and only Kyle Gass aka K.G. or Rage Kage! The songs main section uses the chord sequence Am, G, F - Which just happens to also be the main chord sequence to Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven, undeniably and most definitely the greatest song ever written. I think this was their tribute to that song. Surprising you haven't heard any other Tenacious D songs as they're freaking awesome and Jack Black is just an insane rock vocalist to analyse. Please do more of them!
