EDIT: A couple of necessary caveats to this video: 1) She is Dutch, and not from a Scandinavian country like I thought! My apologies. The accent ideas are still relevant, but I got my countries mixed up. I thought she was from Finland! 2) I am not a Nightwish fan in any form. I had never heard Tarja or Floor before I made these videos. I did not know that Sleeping Sun was written for Tarja. There was no bias or skew of my ideas when I made either video. These are not things that a non-fan of the band should be expected to know.

They have a common language with Hungarians, Edit that last part should have been they migrated from a commen place in Eurasia, I got my Turkish peolple mixed up with my Finn-Ugric people, my apologies, But anyway they live in Scandinavia now but non of the other Scandinavians can understand a thing they are saying.

Floor did do nicely with Puccini. Aside from some good classical work like Dreamflight that I mentioned from her original band After Forever. As well as in her second band Revamp. Which is where she started doing mixed vocals and focusing less on classical vocals. She performed Puccini twice. Both O mio. First time was slightly more belty which I really liked. And then a more refined one. She does very well. Maybe a little nervous as standalone classical and opera performances are not her usual environment. Then sometimes with her band Revamp she would perform it during metal shows. Which she also seemed a little more comfortable in. In nightwish you can see Tarja is more technical. Especially at this point in time. However Floors past training and performances show she is more capable then being laid out. I think some of it is just from venturing away from that styling. And then as well combined with that just confidence and approach I believe. I think she can still do better than she thinks she can sometimes. If that makes sense. Also just the fact that she's much more physically active in stage and does more mixed vocals. So anyone would have a harder time using a controlled and beautiful classical tone with effortless transitions at that point. However end result is end result regardless of the reasoning.

I don't really understand the debate in Nightwish fandom even though I've been a fan since I first heard them around 2003. I don't understand why the fans demand to pick a favorite between Tarja and Floor - I like them both. They both have different styles and they both fit to Nightwish music. The end. I have seen them both singing live with Nightwish and they're amazing singers as well as performers. Why can't we just enjoy the music and leave it at that.

Well, to put it bluntly... The rough division seems to go along the line of when did one start listening to Nightwish. Those that have listened to their performances with the earlier lead vocalists still as members tend to be OK with everyone they've heard, and also have fond memories and emotional connections to old performances. Those who have mainly heard the later lead vocalists perform can feel like those are the only "normal" versions that exist now. Also with Tarja in particular there was a very strong connection that just doesn't go away even after all these years. It's possible that some of the ever continuing debate is fueled by a sort of knee-jerk reaction to why some part of the fandom thinks like this and some other part doesn't.

Ok. I know that this wasn't reaction just more like analyzes her voice. But .. first things first - that was live performance and somebody can show me one singer who can delivered 100% clear notes live after 1,5h hard work on the stage. I don't know nobody who can do that. Also Floor on the stage have f...n gym/cardio/abs training. If somebody wanna a be a expert suppose to try make the same things under the same pressure and with the same conditions. Zach, I'm full respect for your opinion, I see that you know what you talking about but in my opinion you suppose to take another example something like studio version or opera small audience (at YT you can find a few samples with Floor). I wanna just say that you cannot analyze notes one by one and each breath from live concerts when every member of the bands, specially metal/rock bands, doing SHOW, show like making sound, vocals, jumping, running on the stage or headbanging and after that expecting clear studio version notes. I'm not a specialist but I know how hard work is be a beast on the stage. Anyways thank you for your analyze and expert knowledge how voice working in fact.

I had planned to watch this earlier then I saw the announcement that there would be a follow up to this analysis. In the interest of (I don't know) fairness (?) I decided to wait until that had happened to watch this. This way I had more clarity about this critique. All that being said, I'd like to point out that I am a *fan*. I am not a professional singer, I am not voice coach; I am a person who enjoys music. And as a *fan* Nightwish is one of my favorite bands and Floor Jansen *is* absolutely my favorite contemporary female singer; for one reason, and one reason only, her voice *moves* me in a way that no other singer's voice does. Music is an art form, music is entertainment, and music is emotion. We as a species created it to *move* us, and to elicit an emotional response in us, and for entertainment. I think, perhaps, this is why *fans* get sooo defensive about their favorite musicians. When they play (or sing) and that feeling wailes up in them; their chest gets tight, chills run up their spine, and their hair stands on end, that's a real thing. Then when someone tells them that this musician could be better in some way, they're hurt or angry because it somehow invalidates that *feeling* they get. Is Floor perfect? No. And I would doubt she'd claim to be. But is she my favorite singer? Oh god yes. I have driven *hours* to hear her sing. Literally, chasing that *feeling* that her voice gives me. It's awe inspiring (to me) but certainly not technically prefect. But does she possess a voice, uniquely her own, that sends chills up my spine and which once literally brought me to tears in a live setting. Yeap. Someone saying that she's not *technically* perfect doesn't make any of that emotion less valid And, ya know, if she continues to work on her inconsistencies and her technique, she might get better. Think of that. And, as far as I am aware, she does still have a coach. What do you think she's paying someone for? To teach her to sing? No, she's got that down. She's now honing technique. So every body calm the hell down. It is ok that someone said she isn't perfect. And to everybody who is here screaming about Tarja, yes, she is a wonderful singer. If she is your favorite, enjoy. Technically, she is advanced and proficient in a way that Floor isn't. Look at the timeline, while Tarja was studying classical singing. Floor was still technically a "child", still in high school. (Tarja is a good bit older than Floor.) Then at 16 or 17, Floor joined After Forever, around the time that Nightwish was beginning. They had different paths to where they are today. Tarja is an *amazing* singer. And a stand out in her genre because of her background and her style. Floor is, and always has been, much more of a rock/metal singer. They're always going to be different, and Tarja is, perhaps, always going to be more "proficient". But they're good at what they do. That's why a lot of people say Floor suits Nightwish better. Nightwish is a metal band. Floor is a metal singer. A lot of Tarja's solo material would be better classified as "classical crossover" than metal. I don't think this was an accident given she knows what sounds best with her particular voice when she had the freedom to do what she wanted. Enjoy the music. Accept the critiques. They don't make your emotions or your reactions to the music less valid. Those *feelings* are primal, and meaningful to you. Sorry this was long winded. I did not mean to take up so much of your time, but I felt this was a valid angle to this conversation. Thank you. *steps down from soapbox*

Tarja has a few more years of experience in lyrical/classical singing and therefor can rely on that a bit easier than Floor, but Floor's technique isn't lacking in the least compared to Tarja. It quite simply comes down to choices. Tarja's choices are based on her training. Floor's choices are based on finding her own unique voice *from* her training and also her interests. Different motivations, therefor different voices. Tarja also can at times overuse vibrato and mispronounce words in English by going too wide with her vowels (which is mostly from her accent). Tarja's much better with it these days, though. Floor is a soprano that has *very* good control over her head/middle/chest transitions and fry & distortion. And yeah, she tends to smile a lot while she's singing. It doesn't negatively affect her singing in the least, though. Check out After Forever. She's got the training as a metal singer to have immense stamina through her variety of vocal stylings. I appreciate your very thorough and unbiased analysis.

I think there's a big issue with critiquing a singer's "technique" based on one performance. Sometimes singers push and strain on high notes due to that being their actual and regular singing approach. Other times, a singer may show push or strain because they're on a bad day with stamina or other health issues, but they may have a very technical and healthy approach towards singing in general.
@Georg1979
@Georg1979 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. It's a well known issue with rock bands, that they usually have a very tough schedule on tour. Like 100 concerts in a few months or even more. A lot of the iconic bands from the '80s suffered from this too, back in the day. 2 hours of effort almost every day at this level is very tiring. The thing here with this video is that this was a show in the middle of a world tour. But! This was also a show, that was filmed for a DVD release. So no matter what shape you are in, you want to sound good, no matter what. I think that's what was happening here. Floor is very well known for being an intelligent individual. And knows how to take care of her voice. But she's also a very professional performer and knows what to do when. I mostly agree with the analysis of this performance. But I'm not so sure I would like to hear Tarja singing Puccini, more than Floor. I would much rather hear what Zach thinks about Floor singing O mio babbino caro. The Revamp version of it, not the one that was recorded in the dutch TV.

A singers technique is going to be used in every song. Some songs might have different techniques used, but 90% of the time a singer will rely on what they know/or think works. So I don't think it makes much difference is he used this performance, or 20. And he used only 1 performance to critique Tarja too, so there you go. ;p

How I enjoyed this analysis, it replied some of those questions I have been pondering! I read comments here and was thinking how Tuomas Holopainen of NW criticized the personality cult common to pop culture. The main thing is, after all, the work itself, not people behind it. Noticed that someone mentioned Floor Jansen to be a trained opera singer - no, she is not since a short time studies (opera) do not train you to be a professional. She has her own "category". I just wish that all that worshipping won't turn against her since she seems to be a nice person (plus I do believe she is just grateful for constructive analysis - we are never complete, "fully learnt", right?) Thank you for this excellent, interesting and exhaustive analysis. Since I'm very much of a layman on this topic, I'm not even gonna try debating any of your points. However, I'd still like to ask some questions regarding the technical critique you gave. Maybe someone can answer them. 1) Regarding the strain on her voice during the last part of the song, could it be possible that she does that on purpose, as some kind of effect? I'm not convinced that it's her upper register in general that's causing this, because there's several recordings of her singing in that range in a clean, classical and unstrained voice. 2) Since you specifically mentioned her facial expression during that part, could it be possible that this is part of her performance, part of her "act"? As a singer who takes center stage in a concert in so many ways, the performance consists of more things than just the voice.
@jsosic
@jsosic 4 жыл бұрын
Also as an addition - if this really damages vocal, is it something that happens gradually - meaning she will notice every year her voice is a bit weaker/narrower in range or does it happen exponentially - meaning one can do it for years on but then it just worsens quickly within a short period of time and just kills the voice completely?

Floor can take care of her voice. I've seen the whole concert a number of times and she clearly holds back on a few songs that she did earlier on another DVD record. Because it's an important aspect of this performance that this was a show recorded for DVD release. So what I'm trying to point out is that she knows when to give it everything for the sound and when to just go through the motions, all of this because they also have a tough tour schedule. So she could be tired, out of shape, etc. She already lasted 20+ years singing, that's more than Axl Rose or Bon Jovi did in the height of their careers. And she's still in great shape for the future. The problem with all iconic rock/metal bands is that their music is so emotionally exhausting that it's hard to keep up the fire for a particular song for 10 or 20 years. So it might lose it's edge by the performer, especially the singer. So even if the singer doesn't lose his/her voice it's sometimes hard to "rediscover" a song. As Bruce Dickinson said for "Fear of the dark" for example. All in all I think that the next tour with the new album will be a huge success for Nightwish. Regardless how good the new album will be. But after that we will have to see, how they will carry on. As by then they will have mostly gone through their catalog of songs with Floor. So it will be tougher and tougher to stay fresh and new. And they'll also get older as the years go by. So I don't really think that Floor's voice will be the immediate concern in the next ten years for Nightwish. I think she'll be fine.

There is a HUGE difference between a (first time) reaction and a professional in-deep technichal analysis. And it is the latter that Zach does. Zach clearly is aiming at people who sing on a professional basis or want to get there. He just offers technical valuable tips of how to improve and/or to watch out for techniques that might harm a professional voice. I think Floor is very knowledgeable of her own voice. Usually when she belts she uses a lot of mixed voice rather than pure chest voice, so it's much easier for her to sound powerful, because there's a chest voice in use, but it doesn't tire her voice that much, 'cause she uses a lot of head voice in that mix. I saw a concert when she was barely using that high belt, she sung almost all high notes in her head voice - which means that she was probably tired and she didn't want to strain her voice too much. From what I saw from her (and I saw a lot of live singing) she sometimes chooses these powerful belts and she's aware that it's not very healthy, but many times she chose to use a head voice instead, when she felt it might be too much. And I think she really cares about her voice - she's over 40 now and doesn't sound like someone with unhealthy voice. Anyway - great video, I like these type of analysis, when someone gives an honest opinion instead of just praising everything. 🙂 P.S. I don't know how good it was in case of proper English, but it's not my first language and I know I make mistakes, sorry for that.

She can belt high notes without straining and does so plenty of times @Wacken2013. She deliberately added distortion to this belt here to separate herself from Tarja's version and the song needed that climax cause unlike Tarja's version she sang it pretty softly up until that point. That may sound like strain to a classical trained coach but dude this is a metal concert.

Actually Floor is a large soprano. Believed to be A Dramatic Soprano. Which would explain her deeper tone. Especially during a metal concert where yes in sure she pushes a very little bit on the bottom. So headbanging and switching all over with vocals it takes a lot of control to do the sweet voice, quieter, and classical vocals. Even the belts here show she was more tired or out of breath. Or just goofed it and approached it wrong or without taking enough air. Belting powerfully and with little strain is one of her gifts.

I was interested in this analysis until I realized you were reviewing Sleeping Sun. Seriously? Ghost Love Score would have been a far better choice. You have missed something critical here. Floor makes stylistic choices in her singing that can change from measure to measure. She will deliberately sing in a less technically correct way in order to impart emotion to a song. In this case she is emphasizing the lyrics, almost speaking them in a sense. She is reducing the attention to the music: something most artists would not do. Compare this to Tarja's version where she is singing beautifully, but much of the lyrics are unintelligible. As an example, when the Poet and the Pendulum was first performed with Anette Olzon, a boy soprano sang the introduction and the part "Sparkle my scenery". In the later version with Floor, the boy soprano was retained for the introduction, but Floor sang "Sparkle my scenery". She sings it in a thin, almost reedy voice with a hint of instability. She is deliberately imitating the vocal immaturity of a boy soprano. This is a woman who sings without ego. Tarja was more of less the same in every one of her Nightwish songs. Pick any one of them and you have heard what Tarja had to offer. Tarja's classical training shines through in her precise, technical renditions. Floor, on the other hand, is all over the stylistic and technical map, from opera to growls. Floor sings in whatever way the song requires. You need to listen to a lot more of her repertoire before commenting.

I think you may be confusing a deliberate change of style for an inconsistency in her voice and that song will give you a chance to see what she can really do. As a devoted fan of nightwish and of this singer as well as a big time consumer of reaffirm my opinion and bias voice coach reacts videos I watched it all the way through and couldn't disagree with much of anything you had to say about her. To be fair most of these reaction channels are for entertainment primarily. They know they can't wax poetic about every part of a singers technique because people will get bored or mad. So they primarily put the good in about singers. If they have 10 opportunities to input something in 10 minutes they need to do it this way. Or else the one or two critiques they have against a singer will stand out far more. Honestly given the like dislike ratio I was expecting you to tear into her more. But nope. You pretty much stroked my ego just like the rest of them. I agree with just about everything positive and negative. Sometimes when I'm watching the simpler reaction videos I hear the negative aspects and cringe, feeling that the voice coach is going to say something about it but then they rarely if ever do. They ignore it. That's a business decision. And the right one. But you're not here for business you're here to teach and I love that. Keep it up. Edit: except for that thing about sound of silence in the beginning. That's low down dirty. Though I think or hope you were just exaggerating. David was sick thst day and the producers made him do the auto tune. He wasn't happy with it. However I can hardly hear the auto tune and I feel there's a lot there that auto tune wouldn't be a factor in for an analysis. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not an expert and am probably ignorant as to the extent that auto tune can alter things. Lemme know!

Cool channel, it's to cool to have a classical perspective on modern singing! Speaking of which, I would like to know your thoughts on Ian Thornley's voice and singing approach. He's a gritty baritone with soaring high notes who often gets compared with Chris Cornell, but his voice has held out much better than Cornell. It's actually gotten stronger and more consistent with age. He's been singing with grit for 25 years and no discernible decline. Anyway, I thought he would make an interesting case study.

First, Floor Jansen is NOT Scandinavian - she's Dutch. The band is Finnish, but she's had to learn Finnish to express certain thoughts. Otherwise, they communicated in English. Second, the song has certain aspects of changing tones in the music. It makes me wonder if you actually read the music. If you are going to fairly critique this you need to answer the questions where you said things like "I don't know if there's a reason..." - there usually is a reason.
@ZachAnsley
@ZachAnsley 5 жыл бұрын
I can't read her mind. Unless there is a score that a composer wrote with specific dynamic markings and whatnot, there is no way to know exactly why some singers make those kinds of adjustments. Sometimes singers AREN'T thinking about it, and they just do whatever they can do to create the sound. And yeah, I saw after the fact that she wasn't Scandinavian. I'm not a fan of the band, and lots of times when I do analyses of singers I just do cursory glances at their backgrounds. Since Nightwish was from Finland I assumed she was as well. That was my mistake.

I look for 'teachable moments'. I found a video that was 'better' than this one but it was also heavily pitch corrected. I also didn't want to use any of her classical videos next to Tarja because that wouldn't be fair given that Tarja's background is SPECIFICALLY for that kind of repertoire. I also think that my videos wouldn't be nearly as educational or effective if I just sought out the best that everyone had to offer. Trust me, there are videos of me on my old youtube channel certainly not at my vocal best that I would gladly break down in this same way. I do enjoy hearing her sing though, don't get me wrong.

While hes incredibly smart and knows what he is talking about on many things... that song is not the most auto tuned out. I barely heard any if at all. Yes it's enhanced more for reverb or volume. Not so much his voice itself. He has a nice voice and is plenty capable of singing the song. Just maybe not with the same eerie power of the studio one.

I would think if you're serious about wanting to hear dynamic singers, I would think you'd want to check-out Diamanda Galas (unless, of course, you, already, know of her). I don't know how to describe her; but you should view her 1992 performance - with Jon Paul Jones - on the John Stewart Show. The song is Skotseme. As an experimental singer (with a six octave range, purportedly), she's in her own category. In fact, she kinda scares me. Enjoy.
