Liv Kristine. That's the name of the female singer. She used to be, a very long time ago, the singer of Theater of Tragedy, which was the band who started this style, the so called "Beauty and the Beast", inspired obviously on the Phantom of the Opera: a very distorted male vocalist and an angelic voiced female vocalist. Ironically, it is when Kristine joined the band(she wasn't a founding member) that they start it, with an album where the male vocalist actually uses no distortion. The album's name is "Aegis", and it is really good, worthy of listening it all the songs in order. That was back in...1998, if my memory doesn't fail me...

Cradle has been doing this style longer though. Their first album, Principle of Evil Made Flesh, was released in '94 and featured Andrea Meyer doing the beauty vocals. To my recollection no other extreme metal band had done this before but it's been in music for ages and it can't be cited as starting this concept if it's been a part of music for literally eons. You can say that in this genre, second wave black metal, Cradle did bring it to a larger audience and they were the first British black metal band historically. They formed in 1991, well before extreme metal was as commercially viable as it is now. I think people forget how old this band actually is. This song itself is from their 2004 album, Nymphetamine, which they received a Grammy nomination for this video. It's 17 years old this year. The band is 30 years old now and Dani still sounds excellent live. I've seen them live 4 times now and they're excellent. He sounds unreal live. His highs are almost ear shattering and the lows are just as intense. I know that sometime in 2014 he started going to an opera coach to gain more control of his whistle ranges and to preserve his voice better because in the beginning he was just winging it and since he has a unique style there's not a lot of options for coaches in this style especially since death metal vocals weren't recognized as a style until the 90s when he started around the same time as the band Death who just developed the recording technique for recording death metal in a better production quality value so that it didn't just sound like mud. This is why early black metal is referred to as potato metal because the production quality is terrible. That changed when Chuck developed the techniques used to record extreme metal. So if you listen to the demos Cradle did in 91 and onward until their first release in 94 the sounds are vastly different. From 94 onwards the production quality has gotten better over time.

"Cookie Monster" is very accurate. People call them cookie monster vocals anyways. The Blonde girl is Liv Kristine. She is actually from another band called Leaves Eyes. Cradle usually has a female vocalist in the band but at the time of this record Sarah Jezebel Diva was experimenting with her own solo project. So they had their friend Liv cover for her and in the video. The original "Nymphetamine" song features a 4 min extension with Sarah singing instead of Liv.

First, great reaction and professional input, just got to love all thsi. About that high pitch scream, Dani does it ALOT in their early records. I suppose it resonates well with the ideas taken from vampire tales / legends as the lyrics are. Another band, who does this high pitch thing is Hecate Entrhoned. Tehy were, back in the days, the "rival" band for CoF, but never succeeded as Cradle did. Great band anyway and they too, released a new album few years back. Check them out, just for reference for some really high pitch singing (cookie monster style OFC). Thanks for this awesome content!!

@GuinWeaver3 жыл бұрын
Hecate wasn't a rival of Cradle it was literally formed from a former member of Cradle of Filth after he left and took material with him. The band never went far though and that member became a promoter and later on was actually a promoter for Cradle of Filth. Cradle didn't really have rivals they spawned other bands like them when members left or were fired. For instance Dimmu wouldn't still be in existence without Galder ending Old Man's Child after hearing Cradle of Filth and then formed Dimmu inspired by Cradle of Filth. Then after Cradle fired their drummer he joined Dimmu before Dimmu was about to collapse due to lack of members. If he hadn't joined them they wouldn't have made their biggest album, Progenies of the Great Apocalypse, which "rivaled" Cradle's album Nymphetamine in 2004. Cradle has been around for a very long time in the music industry and is an unsung historically important band in metal. Another example is that Richard, current member and guitarist, was the guitar teacher for one of the members of Trivium who arguably started the jent trend in metal. In their own right Trivium has become a big name in metal. Cradle has also been the only metal band to use film studios for their music videos, the first extreme metal band to use full orchestras in their albums not just live, the only extreme metal band to have a horror movie starring, written, and produced by the members themselves, the only band to have circus performers on stage with them and on tour with them, etc etc. The lists of their accomplishments is unreal for not being recognized for anything...

Dani is fairly unique in that when he produces fry it sounds almost as if the voice is split between a tone and overtone, this is what started all the rhumours. What he does do a lot of is fry-whisper and then adding depth into it with more of a growl whilst keeping it to a more spoken than sung tone. All this has lead to his vocals really keeping CoF unique “in the market” so to speak as he is really the only vocalist I have heard doing this. I doubt he is the only one capable but given the band started in the 90s I would suggest that anyone else doing it at this point would just be accused of ripping off CoF haha

I would love to see a reaction to Kurt Nilsen performing Firestone with Kygo. As the one and only winner of the world idol contest Kurt Nilsen has gone under the radar for the most part, but his voice is most certainly worth checking out.
