Yeah, they tend to have the most to say, and they pick up on little details that regular people miss, like the lack of visible tendons in her neck to show she's not straining herself. Also, as in this video, they never wonder if it's really her or not like other people often do. Vocal coaches always know it really is her voice, and they know how she's doing it, but it still shocks them and blows them away even more because they understand how difficult it is to do that.

That "sound" is a false chord scream. I can do that as well. Took me approximately 2 months to learn to get the tone, but probably 3-4 years to get it down well enough (and safe enough to not hurt myself) to perform. 15 years of doing this and I do not have any damage to my voice. I'm glad you noticed the complete lack of tension because thats the trick most vocal teachers get wrong. It is ZERO tension and completely "voiceless". The sound is entirely made by relaxing and holding your vocal cords open and the folds above your vocal chords flapping about, then ultimately just shaped into words by your mouth. If you use any of your voice or throat, it WILL hurt you. I learned from experience that if you feel it or feel tired or strained, you're doing it wrong.

There is a lot of editing on this. That said, the recording schedule for their latest album was very compressed due to also doing 152 shows on several continents that year, and Eugene says she improvised most of the vocal compositions with very few takes. Tati's evaluation was less charitable, saying "I wasn't prepared" haha. She is very talented, but there's a lot of years of work that went into making the most of that talent, including 4 years practicing growls before starting to use them in performances. All told she's been performing in various bands over half her life, since she was 15.

She taught herself to produce the growl solely from her diaphragm, completely avoiding her false chords. One of the big reasons it is so easy for her to switch between melodic and growl so effortlessly.
@Mr.Ekshin2 жыл бұрын
Ummm... no. You really have no idea what you're talking about. Tatiana's growl is 100% produced by her false cords (vestibular folds). The 'diaphragm' is merely a muscle that causes your lungs to draw or expel air. You can't actually produce any sounds with your diaphragm. I assume you've misunderstood all those vocal coaches who talk about "singing from the diaphragm". They are talking about proper air management, not actual sound production.
@Pecos12 жыл бұрын
@@Mr.Ekshin I understand what you said. I just repeated what Tati said in an interview. In another interview with an opera singer, she was asked about the technical side of creating her growls, and she admitted she doesn't know the specifics of how it all works. Just that it works for her.
@Mr.Ekshin2 жыл бұрын
@@Pecos1 - She never said she growled "solely from her diaphragm, completely avoiding her false chords". She may have answered that it comes from her diaphragm (all singing, speaking and breathing starts with muscular control of the lungs).

@@Mr.Ekshin I concede I may have misunderstood. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. She spoke about how her growls and screams come from different parts, that her screams come from her throat whereas her growls came from deeper, and that she used her diaphragm more when making the growls. Again, I admit I may have misunderstood, and she may have just been trying to describe as best as she understands it.

Not trying to take away from this, but there's a lot of layering going on with her vocals (you have to listen pretty close, but it's there). While It's absolutely awesome, it's not quite as live as you would think. You couldn't really get such a clear sound through multiple mics in the same room, because the sound from all the instruments would bleed into the surrounding microphones, causing the engineers to go insane trying to mix everything. So, while the video portion is very much live, the audio is likely individually tracked as per usual with recording sessions. I'm glad you brought up the fact that she was handling the microphone, too, as it makes more of a case to this point. Still an amazing video and I absolutely love Jinjer, just a bit of trickery on Napalm's part.
@borisnot3 жыл бұрын
Although you are completely correct about handling the mic in an estudio environment, that is still a dynamic microphone, so those noises you talk about will be a lot less noticeable. One of the reasons they used that mic might likely be that she likes to interact with it (even more so in a live session - there's some "true" studio sessions in which she uses a condenser mic and don't touch it at all) ;)

Since Tatiana is clearly using an Electro-Voice RE-20 dynamic microphone which wouldn't be as sensitive to handling noise as a condenser the sound engineers probably let it go. Look and feel trumps technicalities. Also, even though this is said to be a "live" recording there's heavy post-processing going on not to mention vocal overdubs throughout the song. Having said that, this is a phenomenal band where each member is a master of their instrument. From the ghost note playing of the drums, to the finger-tapping on the bass, to the complex composition and sound of the guitars - of course, culminating in the magical mastery of the vocals.

Maybe you can react to "Deliverance" by "Opeth" a song who needs more than an audience who spected for any metal song about to destroy something or simply try to make the same music what we are listening to. A great hug from Chile👏

Check out Band-Maid. They're perhaps the best band from the "girls metal band boom" out of Japan, and it fits that they have perhaps the three best voices in the entire scene. (Look at "Anemone" and "Time". "Anemone" is one of the rare songs where their lead guitarist, Kanami Tono, sings backup, and "Time" is- features their rhythm guitarist, Miku Kobato, on leads. [They started out with Kobato and their lead singer, Saiki Atsumi, splitting leads {Kobato would sing a verse, then Atsumi would sing a verse}, but they've since moved towards keeping Kobato more on backing vocals, but giving her a song or two per album on leads.]) Edit: Also, check out "I Can't Live Without You", also by Band-Maid. Perhaps Atsumi's finest performance, the way she navigates the passagio is just art of the highest form.

You might find the extended version of J**k-Off by Tool interesting. It's a 1999 performance of a song on their EP from seven years prior. Has a nice, calming reprieve in the middle, while the beginning and end are both colossal.

Now you need to react to Slaughter to Prevail - Demolisher. Alex's lows will blow you away.
