After watching Ed for the last decade, getting to know his habits (no pun intended) and being an avid fan and follower, I would honestly put the difference in vowels down to complacency/laziness at times! That early thinking out loud video was part of promo for multiply (2014) and was the first acoustic performance of that song, so he was probably focusing and putting effort into remaining on pitch and performing it how it was on the record. You see a very similar pattern with “I’m a mess” from the same record. Quite a high song for him, but recorded in the original key for a video at the same time and same session as the thinking out loud video, and nowadays it’s played a step or two down from the original key. Maybe he’s more focused on having fun performing than being technically correct and in line with the recorded versions these days, or maybe because he performs so often he’s just doing what’s comfortable for his voice 🤷🏼♂️

Dude your voice has gotten so much better too since last year! When you're singing the lines over again to demonstrate, it's FIRE! But I've also noticed Ed's change in vowel placement because when I sing along to his songs, I've had to change my placement to match his sound. I like to match sounds because it's like a workout for my natural voice :) Great video! Can't wait for the album reaction :D xx

I'm a massive ed fan so i can give my pov. I think he's coming back after a long time and he has stated he wanted to come out with a big record "=" and later he'll come out with an all acoustic album :"-". He's definitely trying different sounds and different vocal techniques to catch people's attention hence people listening to the songs more. Plus i guess since he's come back after a long time he takes the key down when singing live . I do not think ed know's what he's doing with his vowels he 's just adapting to his new sound maybe.

I think any good artist, especially ones that write their own lyrics & melodies, change, grow, & mature vocally. And when you sing the same songs THOUSANDS of times, the only way to not and up hating your work is to constantly evolve both your sound & how you hear & interpret those songs! I doubt any artist wants stasis to be what they're known for their entire career, then we'd all say "Ed's boring!". I'm sure you're not meaning it to come across that way, but it should be celebrated that he can bring us new ideas & sounds & still be as amazingly talented as he's always been.

(Or seen Because of Winn Dixie, The Bridge to Terabithia, or the Carrie Diaries.) Also, if you haven’t figured it out by now Ed’s videos don’t make sense 😂 They’re just for fun. He’s only done one serious video and that was for Thinking Out Loud. I also think we’re going to hear a lot of changes in the sound of his voice too because he said he’s quit smoking.
