@Marie Whitbread "better" or "best" is not an objectively accurate measuring tool, thats something to be used in a personal opinion. I would however say Marc is one of the most technically skilled vocalists I have personally listened to recently. If you can link even a few, let alone thousands of artists in this league technically I would love to hear them.

Adam. Just a note. The video was shot by two cameras as one continuous take. The Pavarotti part was added later at the end (as Marc notes, I have yet to learn to sing both voices at once) but the video is both sides of his face singing the Freddie part. We don't know if he had his teeth showing when he sang the Pavarotti part.

@@adammishan you can see from the other video I posted back from 2009, he indeed does not cover his teeth with his lip, but it is not as pronounced as when he is singing like Freddie. So, the observation you made is still correct, if just more subtle.

Thank you for reacting to this piece. It really is a joy to see how Freddie would have sounded singing such a great piece of music. I recently had the immense pleasure of seeing Marc Martel in concert, and he talked about his love for Opera, and how he wished he could have heard Freddie sing it. So he asked a little indulgence from the audience as he sang Ave Maria, at the piano, in Freddie's voice. I have been a Queen and Freddie fan all my life, and Marc singing balladic opera in Freddie's voice brought tears to my eyes.

A duet of two of my favorite musical influences, Freddie Mercury and Luciano Pavarotti. This is one continuous performance from start to finish, shot in one take, using two cameras. No audio has been cut or replaced. (I added the “Pavarotti” harmony for "Vincero, Vincero!" afterwards, since I have yet to master singing in both voices simultaneously. Stay tuned, though.)

Voice teacher here, Adam. I saw you being young and having a Hollywood look and expected to be shouting at my tablet. But, I didn't. I feel like you made excellent points. Had to share a laugh. I'd never heard of Marc Martel. I'm on a Freddie Mercury, Queen kick this quarantine time. The energy is getting me through. I stumbled on the video of Nessun Dorma at 3 AM. A serious, excuse me, wtf moment. What has me laughing was I thought someone had found a very, very young recording of Pavarotti. Pati Wolfgang How can you confuse Marc’s.voice with Pavarotti’s? And you are a vocal coach? Pavarotti was a leggiero and Martel is a spinto! If anything, Martel sounds closer to Boccelli tone-wise. As to the “a voice coming from a thinner body” comment, did you not get the memo that the body mass has nothing to do with producing properly diaphragmatically supported sound? Incidentally, Marc’s support is somewhat if a wonder considering he has never had any proper training.

Another note you might want to emphasize, Adam, is that a true opera singer has spent years expanding their chest and generates nearly unbelievable power and decibels. I was in a choir backing up a tenor from the Chicago Metropolitan Opera (Jonathan Welch). Even without a microphone, his volume was so loud we could easily hear him over the choir (which was amplified with microphones).

Martel is pure excellence. This coming from a enthusiastic opera fan and Nessun Dorma in particular. Question: could vocal coaching have a negative effects on a natural vocal, that is to say if you are born with a singing voice that is naturalistically pure and profound, or could you purify the talent. Most recent studies say the opposite. I prefer Martel to Pavarotti in his later years, as Martel is actually singing with his heart.

usually training helps as it teaches proper technique that is usually very difficult to "find" on your own. However, in Marc's case he has always had an uncanny ability to hear and watch singers and see and observe techniques and then almost flawlessly reproduce them. That is what put him above so many, a natural ability to "hear what is going on" in any voice.

I agree with others who say he sounds like Andrea Bocelli which is still a huge compliment. Marc doesn't claim to sound like exactly like Pavarotti if you look at the notes on the slides at the end of the performance . And yes, unbelievably impressive like most of Marc's work. : )

Being an opera singer, I'm honestly surprised you know as much about technique as you do, but I do want to help you as well. You got the lowered larynx and dropped jaw concept for classical (and lack of tension/relaxed). But if you notice, your sound is a lot darker in this video than Pavarotti's. What you're missing is the forward placement, you want to have the sound going straight onto your hard palate, feel it in your cheekbones. That will really help the brightness in your voice and make it pop out more, with more resonance and vibrance. Not looking to *sound smarter than you" or anything, just wanted to help you out!

@@stone8193 Well... actually there is. I am also an opera singer and I quite agree with Peter. It´s part of the singing technique. Every note you have to have in the "Mask". Maybe you didnt hear about it. I dont know if you study singing or not, but It is the first thing, you have to learn as an opera singer. To concentrate everything to the Mask and relax your jaw. Also, I quite disagree with Peter, in lowering the jaw that much. Jaw has to be moving first to the back and after that drop down. Of course It depends on the note, you are singing. But the priority of the Jaw is the move backwards, not down.

Marc, you are an amazing artist. I love your performance of Bohemian Rhapsody and other popular songs that had been sung by Mercury. To your point near the end about Marc as Pavarotti having his upper lip pulled right back like Mercury would have: Someone mixed a video of an actual Pavarotti performance replacing the "Pavarotti" parts. While his mouth isn't as wide open as Marc's is, his upper teeth were definitely quite exposed on that part.

Marc has a great voice. Really. I appreciate it very much. His voice is amazing... I understand the difficulties to sing in another language, but the italian diction is really different. I'm italian, but it's hard to understand what he's talking about during the performance. However, your analysis is beautiful. Congratulations!

I am stunned that you were not taken more with the way Marc sang the last "vincero" as Freddie. That. Was. MAGIC! Come on, man! I was hoping for a more enthusiastic reaction to that but instead you chose to focus on his upper lip. We don't get to see how his lip was situated as he sang the Pavarotti part of that, as that camera was still filming him singing the Freddie part. The Pavarotti vocals were layered over later. No matter what, this was still an Astonishing performance of this song by a guy who didn't have ANY training or coaching until he became "famous" and even then, the coaching and training is just to keep his voice healthy. He's blown you away before. I don't understand why you weren't blown away by this one as well.

Marc isn't training with anybody as far as I know. He says he has never taken a vocal lesson from a professional coach.

Man a chill went up my spine when the two voices went at the same time. I agree his Pavarotti was a little bit off. I seen one interview with Marc where he said he has a hard time not sounding like Freddie sometimes. I feel he always had a natural singing voice that was close to Freddie's and then studied Freddie to sound exactly like him. Adam, you and Ken Tamplan are by far the best vocal coaches in my opinion. Keep up the amazing work.

Another great video Adam. I’m just curious as I’ve seen videos of Nessun Dorma and the critique given, even to Italian singers is their pronunciation of Italian lyrics. How does Marc fare in this aspect? I also agree with the technical aspect as he can improve more to really be like those great tenors. A little tweaking and he’s there! 😊
