Thanks Ken for covering Phil. He's my favorite artist not only because I love everything he does but most of all, because he's a very nice and simple guy. Last time I saw him was last year and he had to sing while sitting on a chair. Still a great voice though. I'm afraid that was my last Phil Collins show.

That was awesome! My Mom had that album (Face Value) when it came out and I played this song and Missed Again all the time wailing away on the couch like it was a drum set. I must have driven the downstairs neighbors crazy in that apartment. My 2 Sons were blown away by this song when I played it in the car when they were young. Thank you Ken, and God bless

Phil C. may not have a broad, big voice but with his exquisite, pinpoint resonance he doesnt need it. His tone, pitch and diction are impeccable as he hits all his front resonators in his facial mask. His tone is somewhat metallic sounding which suits the style of music he sings as well. Incredible voice.

Very well said. There's nobody in all my life that I've heard more than Phil Collins. I wouldn't say I'm an "expert" or anything silly like that but it's nearly like you read my mind. He has a very specific tone and level to his voice and he hits it in a millisecond and never has to change anything. It's almost like an "auto-pilot." You are right on the money with everything you said and I absolutely adore Phil's vocals.

@@kentamplin It's not like that for everyone. I grew up in the 80's and my intro to Genesis and Phil Collins was the album Invisible Touch which came out in 1986. It wasn't till much later that I listened to their earlier albums and discovered a whole different side to Genesis. I would describe a lot of their early music as madrigal-like and whimsical prog rock. It's like nothing else and it's absolutely fantastic.

This song is a great example of how creative use of effects can magnify the impact of the song. On the original recording his voice had that very pronounced slap back delay, Daryl Stermer's guitar was way back in a hall and the the amazing massive gated reverb concert tom fill was just SO dramatic. Great stuff! Your breaking down of vocal techniques is so informative! Thank you

Thanks for this Ken. I would really love to see you do one of your dedicated takedowns/medleys/analyses of Phil Collins and his work with Genesis - such an incredibly versatile voice that can run the gamut from the softest, most delicate mainstream pop with something like "One More Night" to some pretty insane face-melting rock sounds on a track like "Mama". Oh my gosh. I forgot about the song, tempted by the fruit of another, by Squeeze. You sent me back. I love that song, thanks for bringing it back,. Great song.

Phil Collins did begin as a child actor before becoming a professional drummer. So, it's not surprising where he gets his theatricality.

Great Friday choice/reaction. Love the vocal vamping at the end. Can you do a video on vocal vamping? Always a favorite part of a song. Take care.

Name a drummers/singers that can do what Phil Collins did: Levon Helm (The Band), Karen Carpenter (Carpenters), Don Henley (Eagles), Ringo Starr (Beatles), and many others! Phil can do anything behind those drums and sing at the same time!

Actually there are a surprising lot of drummers who eventually became lead singers. Especially in soul music. I don't necessarily think it's that unique. I think the unique part is that once drummers get reluctantly pushed to the front stage as the lead singer, they rarely get the chance to really play drums anymore. And Phil doesn't only they play drums either. He has a had a regular drummer as a solo act and with Genesis for decades. He always kept a drum set on stage for himself so he could play certain songs or to battle with the other drummer. I always appreciated that about him.
