FUN FACT: David Draiman was a healthcare facility administrator for 5 years before he answered an ad Disturbed placed in a local music publication in Chicago looking for a vocalist.

David has such good control over his voice... if he didn't he wouldn't have been singing all these years... he would have ruined his vocal chords ... glad you appreciate him thank you for for your reaction th this video

As a former classical singer myself I'll tell you there's tons of amazing metal singers. It's actually what drew me to the genre as some have more classical type of methods. Check out Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. The song Hallowed Be Thy Name is a good one. I like Live in Rio. Also Geoff Tate from Queensryche especially in the 80s and early 90s. Check out Take Hold of the Flame or Queen of the Reich..both live in Tokyo 1984

I like how you (and other vocal coaches) all note how you're not trained in this style of singing, but still appreciate the talent and skill and training that is involved in it. As a kid I remember parents saying rock/heavy metal was just screaming/noise. You're breaking down that "noise" to the singing techniques involved. I think you'd LOVE Brent Smith of Shinedown. My personal favorite of his is Lynard Skynard cover of "Simple Man" Although "45" and "Second Chance" are to excellent songs to react to.

Mosh pits - if you fall over in the mosh pit, within a couple of seconds you'll have 2 or 3 people grab you and pull you up. IMO it's a lot safer than it looks. The edge of the mosh pit is a good place to stand because the clear space means that you get a much better view of the stage. Disturbed is one of my favourite bands, I've seen them live and it's amazing.

"Ten Thousand Fists" is a great showcase of David's range IMO. Sounds like it also might be time to delve into Ronnie James Dio - I would suggest starting with "The Last in Line" and "Holy Diver" from his solo work, and then "Heaven and Hell" and "Children of the Sea" from his time in Black Sabbath (he replaced Ozzy Osbourne).

"Remember" by Disturbed is an interesting one where he "flexes" more on his voice than in the album you just heard. Have you heard Linkin Park's "Crawling"? Chester had quite the pipes. "Given up" is also popular, not so much to hear his range but his power.

You should really check out his live concert performing Sound of Silence with Myles Kennedy. It's a great performance. Disturbed has such a huge catalog of great songs, including some great covers. But one I would definitely recommend would be "The Light". Then from there "Hold on to the Memories", "The Vengeful One", "Stricken", "Indestructible", "Land of Confusion", " Inside the Fire", "Stupify", "The Night", "Ten Thousand Fists", "Prayer", "Asylum", "The Infection", "The Game", "Another Way to Die", "Haunted ", "Voices", "Decadence", "The Animal". And many, many more. They are a great band!

They do a wonderful job of keeping the crowd entertained as well. You have been bitten by the sickness, welcome to being a part of Disturbed. Keep going down the heavy metal genre of music. @@LinguisticSugar You know, I don't know. I've heard both and the styles sound different to my ear, but maybe the training and techniques are the same? I had the impression that cantors in the Jewish faith are more rigorously trained in the ability to hold notes for extended periods of time and use extensive range. But my other limited experience hearing cantoring comes from interactions with a few small local Catholic churches where that doesn't seem to be the case. I don't know enough to know what I don't know, though. So maybe?

David has alot of medical issues surrounding his vocal cords. When he was a kid he had a deviated septum and had to learn to sing despite it, after he had it fixes the technique he developed to cover the deviation resulted in his rasp. He also has a condition related to some flappy part in his throat which results in stomach fluid splashing back up his throat onto his vocal cords

They do perform Sound of Silence at their gigs. There's a video of Myles Kennedy coming on to duet with David at one. A friend went to their show, he said that when they played it the crowd was silent. But Bethany, methinks your inner metalhead is breaking free. Which means Metallica is in your future. Master of Puppets is of course the natural launchpad into the world of the most commercially successful and influential metal band alive. James has a great metal voice. Heavily influenced by Iron Maiden, who have been mentioned in the comments. You will love Bruce if you haven't already heard him. Hallowed be Thy Name from the Beast over Hammersmith show 1982 is a real vocal treat.

Your enthusiasm to go down the metal rabbit hole is infectious! I've been a metal head for 50 years and might be able to answer your mosh pit questions. There are still mosh pits, they're still called mosh pits (or just "pits"). They're going strong and not going away anytime soon. There are different types of pits, circle pits, walls of death, etc. Believe or not there's pit etiquette too. There's even been legislators that have tried to outlaw mosh pits. If you plan on going to a metal concert or festival and you don't want to be in a pit, I would recommend that you try to keep your head on a swivel because a pit can break out anytime or anywhere. Hope this helps a little. Love your channel!

I paused this video a minute in just to type out that I noticed you already swaying to the drums at the beginning. It's SOOO catchy! I loved seeing you already moving to the beats. Later you talk about the opening instrumentals and how they're intense and exciting. To me they feel very primal and add to that excitement! I do find this version of the song difficult to hear his true vocals during the song though. There's a lot of texture to his voice in this song. Especially in the first verse (Without talking about how clear he sings, which is amazing).

After seeing your reaction to Sound of Silence, I was REALLY hoping you'd do this one and you didn't disappoint! Great reaction. Where the concert experience is next level, to feel the power of this song, crank up the studio version (kudos to you for understanding some people might be sensitive to the lyrics). They also do a version of If I Ever Lose My Faith in You by Sting. Another vocalist of similar contrasts you might want to give a listen to is Corey Taylor. He's the lead singer for Slipknot (warning: they're pretty intense and the videos can be a bit distracting) as well as Stone Sour. I'd suggest Before I Forget by Slipknot and contrast that with Bother by Stone Sour or the live, acoustic version of Snuff that he does solo. Here's hoping you keep enjoying your journey!

watching you react to sound of silence as your intro to Disturbed and then seeing you go directly to Sickness is amazing and doing a full version of the song too....most i have seen do the edited version of the song and it really takes away from the song in a whole.....a few songs....Dropping Plate, The Game, Vocies

I've seen them live and this is one of only a couple bands I've ever seen that sound almost exactly the same live as they do on a recorded track. David's voice is tremendous.

As far as the technicalities of voice distortion are concerned, you may look for Operation: Throat Camera here on YT. Once you see whats happening inside the throat while making these distortions, it becomes apparent why that doesn't nagtively effect your true vocal folds.

He is so cool and a nice human being too with an incredible voice... I love this band and metal music in general. And I hope you liked it too) The mommy he cusses at so much is I believe the society that beats its own child and torments him. and he is angry with her. I love the song, it has so much emotion, intensity to it.

He's also playing around with the melody, quite a bit. Nice to see them still making it new and having fun with it.

The first time I ever listened to Disturbed was at that exact same festival in Germany a few years later, just went to a festival because my friends did not knowing anything about the music, so the first time I ever listened to both Disturbed and SOAD was live in concert 😂 and I was just blown away. Been a fan ever since! There's music that's not for everyone and then there's music that is just-GOOD.

Another great reaction! I am a lifelong metalhead and as you listen to more metal you can hear how talented our bands and singers are. I'd also recommend Rob Halford of Judas Priest and for sure more Jinjer!

David is an amazing lead vocalist... I love the band... "Inside the Fire" is definitely a song to check out... though watch your heart strings on that... the subject is dark. But the song is amazing. They have so many wonderful songs.

Visceral. Emotional. Raw. 3 words for David Draiman's voice. I 2nd the suggestion to listen to Iron Maiden & Bruce Dickinson. Having seen them live on 3 different tours, his voice sounds exactly the same from studio to stage, but in a much different way than Disturbed. The late Meat Loaf, Bat out of Hell album specifically, was my intro to heavy metal and you'd likely enjoy his voice too. For something intensely different, tribal and emotive, check out The Hu and Heilung. The Hu blends modern with Mongolian tradition. Heilung is a throw back to what the megalithic era would have sounded like.

Yup! More please! David is an amazing vocalist! And Disturbed have so many great songs to choose from. And I would agree with the other comments about you checking out Iron Maiden. I believe you will find Bruce's voice very interesting! And he is the king of stamina.

Yes, David has complete mastery of his voice...both vocal chords and FALSE vocal chords and can switch between them with unparalleled ease....which is difficult to do. He can sing very angelically...then in the next second , go to raspy distortion. He knows how to do it as he's been doing it for more than 25 years!! Also did you notice that he actually has vibrato on the rasp?....which is incredibly hard to do. You can notice it in Sound of Silence at the end when he uses the rasp. Loved your reaction Bethany.

7:46 to 8:17 That's the part this song that puts everyone who does a reaction to Down with The Sickness in shock for the lead singer talking about how his mother abuse him and he wasn't going to take it no more. Because this part was censored from mainstream radio.

David's voice, every time more I do listen him singing, keeps slowly but inexorably climbing to the very 5 top voices, those which gave me more, in terms of emotion, surprise and everything in between and around... and most importantly who managed to sing my pain and sorrow like nobody else. I put'em in order: Untouchable voice of all angels: Jeff Buckley {with angels, somewhere, he's singing now my never forgotten "dream brother"!} Untouchable alien voices: Demetrio Stratos {Area, from Italy. Dead ─ or gone back to his own planet somewhere out there ─ too soon too long ago.} and Mike Patton {Faith No More and many more. Sorta Demetrio Stratos' heir!} Untouchable divine voice: Freddie "The Queen" Mercury Earthly human voices: 1st. Layne Staley {Alice In Chains / Mad Season} 2nd. Chris Cornell {Soundgarden / Audioslave} ─ this distancing line says it all ─ 3rd. Scott Weiland {Stone Temple Pilots} 4th. Eddie Vedder {Pearl Jam} / Michael Hutchence {INXS} 5th. Phil Anselmo {Pantera} / David Draiman {Disturbed... redundant, I know!} PS: I guess some would wonder "why no female singer in that list!??" Well... female voices are harder to put in order for myself but, in general, being a man those voices above were {I stopped listening Jeff─ Buckley ─ after he died, to painful for to even try, his death devastated me} or are voices I could 100% relate to and identify with, for some of the most obvious yet not misogynist reasons. I just say it would like asking me who's better between Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Meryl Streep... I just can't!
