4:56 He said once in an interview that it actually happened organically while they were recording the song in the studio. That was originally just supposed to be a pause, like 1-2 seconds of silence, but between the drums and the guitars, he could feel this tribal, primal energy building and it just sort of came out! They stopped and looked at him like "What the hell was that?!" but it worked and they kept it in.

Mommy is actually a metaphor for mainstream society and how they treat outcasts

Very good that is exactly what it means. All these other dorks that say its about child abuse don't know what their talking about.

the 'mother' is a metaphor for Mother Society who likes to force people to conform and the child hitting the 'mother' is society fighting back against conformity and maintaining their individuality which is part of what this band is about at their core (they have another song called 'Divide' that also talks about individuality you should check out. I sub'd

Could it just be mother beating his ass? Todays society needs everything to have some stupid deep meaning. This country is becoming so soft. 😡
@isaiahwiita4474 Жыл бұрын
@@ernie1238except that meaning is what David said it was about.
@michaelfredgren1342 Жыл бұрын
@@ernie1238 Well, David said that it is not that in interviews. Also, I think if you listen to the song, David actually sings parts in two different voices to mimic the internal struggle one has with being and individual and also conforming to the expectations of others in a society.

I see"mother" as the government (both parties).

I highly recommend you find David’s interpretation of the spoken part discussed in many interviews. It’s message isn’t usually interpreted as intended. His own mother didn’t abuse him, the song is intended as an analogy. However, it seems that with some of the greatest songs, the meaning is intentionally left vague so that the individual can interpret it in the best way possible for themselves.

It's a kick to "mother" society, the way it is "handling" those who don't fit in. It is NOT his mother!!

The Bad Mama part is not autobiographical, but a metaphor for mother society suppressing and punishing individualism.

I love Disturbed.....never liked metal music before and I'm 65 ;) But speaking of the crowd....maybe my age...maybe my experience....I am so distracted by the potential danger I see for a crowd surge at any moment. Hard for me to look past it. The same with the crowd at Robbie Williams (Knebworth) ... just too darn scary for me...even the smaller crowd at J Hope's performance at Lalapalooza looked dangerous. Thanks Schnell! 'ARMY' grandma

I always the love this song because it seems like David is singing in two separate voices which demonstrates the conflict between one being true to themselves and one conforming to society. If you liked this, than you should do "Stupidfy" especially with the video.

The rant at the end is not about his mother. He loves his mommy and is a very kind individual.

You're one of the few people who have reacted to this song and now because you've heard the whole song know that it's about child abuse and that helps you to understand what the sickness is because it's passed from parent to child and you can feel it Rising within you
@VadulTharys10 ай бұрын
LOL no it is not about child abuse and never has been. David has been very clear Mommy is society and government and cults forcing abusing anyone who does not conform. It has nothing to do with child abuse and David has nothing but praise for his mother.

About 15 years ago, or more, my daughter got tickets for "Warped Tour" when it came to our area. She's actually been a couple of times. Now she's about 5', maybe 5'1" on a good day. She got slammed around in the mosh pit and ended up getting picked up and crowd surfed toward the stage. She also got her arms signed by the band "Bowling for Soup".

I’ve seen them a few times alive. They are really good life and I was going to go see 20 years of the sickness but the pandemic cancel that I think they’re touring for it now, so maybe I’ll get a chance this summer.

Yeah, that spoken word bridge part is always cut out of radio edits, and the official music video. You only get it with the original album song, or with live versions. I guess it's considered too Disturbing.
@TomKirkemo-l5c10 ай бұрын
That is not about his mother...it's describing the "mother" society and those who are "different". Davids mother actually reacted to this, and David responded in an intervju. It Has NOTHING to do about his mother! :) It is about the sickness "mother" society brings it's things upon us. And that "different" people are just as much worth than all the "others".
@paulfyffe485410 ай бұрын
I'm sure he does love his mother. Every time I've seen him, he's been the nicest guy ever. What he was trying to get back to the song sounded very much like child abuse to me. I just never thought to ask him, but then again, I try to keep to myself and try not to bother the performers. Now I wish I'd asked him or sketch. There's no way I would have been able to ever interpret that song to mean the government as a parent. And Society is the mother I have follow-up questions if that's the case

This song was always referred to as the “monkey song” amongst my friends because of the opening and it if you don’t pay attention to the lyrics it almost sounds like he says knock your monkey down the sickness in the chorus.
