Volcano Update - Lava Volume Since 2021 And The Other Volcanoes That Are Getting ready

This video touches on a lot of things like the lava volume from eruption number one and what volcanoes bight be next to tease us and we have many systems to work with there. I'm also mentioning a new earthquake swarm just by Reykjavik that is quite odd, we even got a magnitude 3 plus while i was editing this and they are just about to deserve it's own video due to the location.
Note that I used a new microphone for this video and will for sure have some setting problems while I find the best settings and feel free to comment on the sound from my last 3 videos.

It's great to see you so close to 100k, Gylfi! BTW: Have the wires in the steering column connecting the key-decoder coil to the main computer checked. Those being shorted by wear or getting loose was the reason a buddies 4W stopped at more or less random moments and has been surprisingly common with multiple people i know since then.

well I was disappointed, but not very disappointed. sure, I booked my flight ahead of time, got proper hiking gear and shoes, and made sure to test the equipment by seeking out hilly terrain around Hamburg first in anticipation of the strenuous long hike ahead of me, but I can state wholeheartedly that even though the eruption died down just a day before my flight, I still was happy to go and have my first close encounter with an active volcano. I've been fascinated by volcanoes all my life but this was that first time that I saw what you like to refer to as "the hot stuff" for as I approached the plateau overlooking meradalir and the newly formed lava field, I could see a volcanologist at the base of the hill poking holes into the fresh lava and get some of that "hot stuff" from under the crust, collecting samples. much to the delight of hikers that assembled in a half circle around him like an old amphitheater. I was watching it from atop the hill and could distinctly see the glow, but I decided not to go down to the lava field because it was a very long and steep ascend and my concern was that I would not be able to return to the base later on. I was exhausted by the time I returned to the parking space, but I was very proud and had a sense of accomplishment. as part of this experience, what I like to do is paint locations I visit wherever I go in the world, and yes, I made a watercolor sketch of Meradalir looking at from the aforementioned vantage point that I posted here on instagram instagram.com/p/Chy3Woto34k/?img_index=1 one bit of solace as also that I got to see the lava show, which was the first time I saw the "hot stuff" up close. very touristy for sure, and I remember that they had a staff memember, who introduced himself as a French volcanologist who, despite his shared passion for volcanoes also never had the chance to see anything active because he was always busy somewhere else, including Iceland which is amazing and made for a funny story. On my way back home to Hamburg there was one thing I'll never forget, and that was the view of the eruption site from the airplane which I caught just a few minutes after take off. It was really quite the sight like orbiting the moon. I had no hopes for returning to Iceland this year but then I understood that these were not to be messed with anyway, so who knows when or where something will occur. Whichever it is, I wish all the best to you and your fellow countrymen and the people living in the capital area and on the Reykjanes Peninsula! Thank you so much for all your great content so far!

Why are the floods from the glaciers bad-smelling ? And at the 7:55 mark when you talked of the Hekla volcano, what was the large burgundy area on the slope to the left ? A burgundy colored moss ? Woo hoo ! Party video forth-coming ! Thanks for another stunning video, Glyfi !

the bad smell in the glacier floods is from underlying low-level volcanic activity - not so much due to the presence of the glacier itself. Hot springs without glacier stink as well. To my knowledge this is related to H2S (hydrogen sulphide), i.e. the rotten egg gas. As for the red spot, this is probably red rock. basaltic lava can look red if it contains iron which then oxidises. I am not 100% certain that this is the cause here. There are however very red rocks along Jökulsá á Fjöllum, called Rauðhólar (red hills) - no moss involved.
