InSar data has confirmed 4cm land uplift in the Torfajökull Caldera and it is of course big news that the largest caldera in Iceland seems to be getting ready for the first eruption since the year 1477. I have therefore changed my travel plans for the rest of the summer, in need more footage from this region in addition to all the other video tasks i have in order to make the most from my upcoming updates about this region.
As always, channel supporters have numerous options to support my work that includes considerable travel cost.

Any uplifting or increased thermal activities should carry more importance where tectonic plates are pulling apart,as opposed to subduction. I'm wondering if volcanic eruptions follow a pattern (geological time) , moving along the fault line,or just randomly? Does a major eruption remove pressure for a while, or is it followed by more activity?👍🌏
@Peter_S_
@Peter_S_ Жыл бұрын
If you want to know more about the mechanics, search for the term 'magmatic intrusion'. There is always new pressure from tectonic movement but you'll find less of the localized 'hot spot' activity you find in Hawaii and Yellowstone and places like that because of the complex intersection of plates and plate movements. Much of the country is a hot spot. It's a big area of much activity with a preference for activity along fault lines.

Volcanic eruption can follow a pattern, when you have a long term, stable system fueling it. We might see something with the recent Fagradalsfjall eruption sequence. But unfortunately our earth is very dynamic, even on short time scales. That's why you can never say an eruption is "overdue". This gets especially more complicated for explosive eruption where the magma has to go through differentiation first such as Torfajökull.

It looks as if the mountain behind Landmannalaugar has been eroded by what I imagine was a huge flood. If that is what happened, it's scary to think that the "main tourist spot" in that area could again be swept clean. Thanks for this and all the other excellent videos you've made. They're beautiful and thought-provoking. Your narration sets the complex landscape in historical and geological contexts. Thanks!

If there is rhyolite involved around or at Torfajökull, there's a big chance that a possible eruption will be rather explosive.

Yeah that can't be good. I don't want to be that doom and gloom guy, but eruptions involving rhyolite magma are rather explosive, unless the gas escapes before the eruption starts, then it produces some rather thick lava flows. But that doesn't always happen.

@@JustIcelandicdoes it s2em like essentially this will depend on how long it takes to erupt. An eruption soon is lightly or non explosive as not much pressure had built up. But for every couple months more and more gas builds. Unless fumerol3s allow sufficient venting hut that usually doesn't happen
@RoxnDox

A hotspot can be large enough to supply magma to a wide area. If you look at the 3D modeling of the plumbing underneath Yellowstone, you see magma chambers are a complex mess. No reason it would be any different under Iceland. You can almost guarantee that there’s a magma chamber feeding the caldera, not a direct mantle plume, because of the rhyolitic composition. Rhyolite is a high-silica magma, and you get those by sitting underground long enough to differentiate as iron and manganese rich crystals form and settle out. Or by starting with partial melting of a sub ducted slab, which you don’t get at a diverging boundary of course.

Gylfi, just a quick tip, whatever way you approach the Landmannalaugar region, try and avoid the North part of the F208 use the F225 instead. The road is horrific, too much transport from tourist coaches has badly rutted this road and it is a hour of hell. Don't ask me how I know. I love the graphics from CNES/Airbus, Maxar. Weather has been 50/50 blue skies and moody and probably difficult to predict days in advance. It is an amazing region which I enjoy visiting most of all of Iceland. I found I don't care too much what weather it is there although sunset and sunrise photography and droning require no fog... A couple of weeks ago I wanted to climb Blahnukur mountain for sunset / sunrise (only 4h apart) but it was too cloudy and spent the evening in the geothermal pool instead

Any volcanic area that can produce a large eruption, or one that can produce a explosive eruption that threatens nearby towns or cities, or a much larger area like what happened in 2010 should be monitored closely. Also, since hotspots can be large, in terms of volume and area, it's possible that the Icelandic hotspot could be under both volcanic areas, with them being on the edges, possibly. Or with the Bardabunga being on the center of the hotspot and the other near the edge.

Well, its just possible the world could get a rude awakening if the caldera uplift results in an eruption. Of the 12 recorded eruption since 9300BCE, 4 have been VEI6/7, the last. Around 2200BCE formed the current caldera. If you look at the eruptive history, which is still debated by the geophysical community, the average period between caldera forming eruptions is around 1900 years, with lesser eruptions about every 450 years, but with gaps up to around 1100 years. That means, if the complex is staying true to form, then a caldera forming eruption has, as an average, been due for around 600 years, but one may not happen for more than another 900 years. We simply lack the data to predict, with any certainty, when such complexes are likely to erupt, or how powerful that eruption may be. From a awe perspective, a caldera forming eruption would be a staggering event to behold and probe with modern instruments, but the human impact of such an event would be truly devastating, Iceland may be uninhabitable for a number of years, weather and flights around the northern hemisphere severally impacted for years due to volcanic dust lofted high into the atmosphere. This could potentially be amazing, and tragic at the same time.

Thank you very much for this information, appreciated. There is a certain tendency in the Icelandic scientific community to hold back bad news, and this actually applies to the media as well, like the banking collapse in 2008 was partly the result of denial, and I sense a kind of denial when it comes the large volcanic systems. I think the best example is the coverage after the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull in 2010, which was a minor event, but a katle eruption could however be underway and it was foreign documentaries that got me going after the type of information of the kind I present here on the channel, or risk just a simple assessment, no matter how it looks. It's just a bit silly that i had to learn how extremely dangerous many of our system are from foreign filmmakers...

Have a great adventure, I hope you get the weather and light you need. I think there could be some truth in Torfajökull being on or near the centre of the Icelandic system, I had previously always wondered how Katla could be so powerful, when it appeared almost isolated from where main centre was supposed to have been. There is so much more to discover.

While an eruption now may not follow the “years between eruptions “ pattern. At this time our earth is experiencing a reduced magnetic shield as well as shifting magnetic poles. I haven’t heard scientists calculate in this once in 6 or 12,000 year events. Love your videos. My evening routine in 2021/22/23 was to watch the Iceland and Hawaii volcanoes after dinner. Loved watching the summer night sky in Iceland!
@brucetidwell7715
@brucetidwell7715 Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting connection. I have read about both of those things. I seems like the shifting poles, in particular, could possibly have some kind of impact on volcanic activity. I suspect that is something that geologists don't have enough information to even speculate on.

I think (armchair expert) that it's probably "normal" caldera behaviour. We had 12cm of uplift at Taupo volcano without an eruption, and calderas around the world can rise and subside without any eruption eventuating.
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Жыл бұрын
As an armchair expert my self :) i'm often trying to read between the lines when our "other experts "comment. In this case, i noticed a volcanologist turn on like never before, this looked serous to him while others were more easy about this. There have been some minor inflation/deflation chapters there but as far as i can understand, this is way more than usual so the experts want more equipment up there.

How appropriate, MAGMA was todays Wordle word! Question: how *chemically* does hot spot lava differ from mid Atlantic plate spreading lava? There must be differences. I know that low silica makes the lava runny (low viscosity), but there must be other differences as well. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

But, different types of volcano give different types of lava. Therefore, the types of lava can be used to distinguish the different types of volcano. There are two distinct types of volcanism in Iceland (as I understand matters), the mid-Atlantic splitting type and the hot spot type. I had always assumed that the Reykjanesfólkvangur volcanism was from the hot spot, but this video (and the information that the Bárðabunga is the hot spot) makes me think otherwise. Can you ask your experts at the university??? Thanks!
@brucetidwell7715
@brucetidwell7715 Жыл бұрын
Is it correct to assume there will be some relatively smaller new cone formed rather than that entire giant caldera opening up? Even though, I don't suppose a caldera would exist there if there hadn't been a time when it did. That would impact weather all the way around the planet!
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Жыл бұрын
It's i general expected that this might be a "moderate eruption" but we must however be aware of the forces there where the Bárðarbunga meets the Torfajökull system, it's a marriage from hell in a way and there are some mighty stories there from the past: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Ej%C3%B3rs%C3%A1_Lava
