at TDC (timing end), the hole on the tone ring is exactly lined up with the circle at the top (left of the threaded insert), or a small mark right below it for the metal version. looks like you didnt set the engine to TDC. if you lock the front crank sprocket with the tool (recommend using a ziptie if the belt isn't on), it shouldn't be able to move from the correct position

@tobbyhush yes. Some times you just have to find away and not give in to a repair. It’s satisfying when you succeed. 👍

The way I did it was to remove the metal ring from the seal and simply align and press the seal in by hand, but you do need a good eye for that. Included tool does help. However upon installing the ring I hammered it in with a rubber mallet. You can also set the engine to TDC, this gives you a few alignment marks to go by.

may i ask why did you choose to swap from plastic housing seal to all metal type? was the plastic an aftermarket seal ? the metal seal looks oem as i can see Audi sign but im sure oem was plastic can you shed some context on that please .

Is the small supposed to sit behind the metal face of the crank or sit around it

0.5 mm under flush of the crankshaft face !

When you install flywheel it will also push the ring to the correct depth so it's often better to let is protrude a little than push it too far.

@@BP02392 they was alignment washers that are fitted on cars. (Camber bolt washers)
