in the manga, the line when atsumu says "I'm moved shoyo kun" is a bit longer he thinks to himself "It doesn't matter if it's short or if it's low, he doesn't care if it's too close to the net either. if his setter gave his all putting that ball up, he'll take it every time... There were a couple moments in this episode that either got cut a bit or couldn't provide as much context due to differences in mediums, so I'll try and explain: 1) When Tanaka thinks that he needs to live up to Kageyama's trust in him, the word he /thinks/ is "trust", but the word that is actually written in the manga is "threat" ("trust" is written above it, signifying that it's the way the author wants you to read this particular word). The official English translation for this actually wasn't so bad: "That wasn't some encouragement. That was a threat. He was saying, 'Show them why I have faith in you'". There's a bunch of way to interpret this and dig deeper, but, much like the title says, it shows how Kageyama's getting more comfortable with being a king of the court and ruling but also stepping back when necessary - just like Hinata said, it is his true nature. 2) The whole last scene with Hinata's "gimme the next one too" is chef's kiss. Kageyama thought he was going to complain, because he did that at the training camp, but they key difference was that back then Kageyama backed down almost consciously, choosing to go easy on Hinata, but here he tried his best to set the ball. Before Atsumu says he's moved, he thinks this: "It doesn't matter if it's short or low. He doesn't care if it's too close to the net. If the setter gave his all putting that ball up, he'll take it every time". Basically Atsumu realized that Hinata's actually meeting all his standards as a player xD True competitors are all on the same page!

17:28 it makes sense for them to root for Karasuno. Karasuno is representing Miyagi in the Nationals so any team from Miyagi would normally root for Karasuno even if they don't have any connection. (In this case they do, the one who said: "try harder dammit" was from Aoba Johsai)

So the scene about the two captains as I interpreted it starts earlier in the episode. Kita, Inari's captain, says he doesn't particularly like the banner because he values consistency and not trying something new everytime, but he realizes that those who do are amazing and he wants to back his teammates. That's why when the twins miss their quick he's there to cover. He feels Daichi is similar to him so he's confused as to why Daichi would make himself a decoy instead of trying to cover for his teammates in case they get blocked or miss the spike. Daichi rebuke that philosophy, saying that the concept of their team is to slug out every single attack so there's no point in him defending. It ends in a poetic way where Daichi actually get to spike an attack they almost never do, surprising Kita and then the ball hits their banner. Kita sees this and understands that's what "We have no need for memories" is all about and smiles.

In the manga, Tanaka said " That wasn't encouragement, it was a threat". Basically, Kageyama told him "I don't care if you're on a roll or having an off day, don't you dare abandon us in our time of need" when he said "No".

Awesome reaction as always coach! I was actually waiting more for this episode than the last one, specially for the last scene which, in my opinion, wasn't that good animated. In the manga there's way more context for it; up till now we've seen how intense Atsumu (the yellow hair twin) is with volleyball, he's a setter that always does his best to make the best set possible for his teammates as well as pushing them to their limits to get better, he never meet a hitter with the exact same mentality as him, until he saw Hinata. Hinata, while having a different personality and approach than Atsumu, it's actually really similar to him in the sense that he always trys to do the best spike he can and he pushes the setter to their limits so they can improve, if his setter did his best to get the ball up for him, it doesn't matter if it's low, it doesn't matter if it's close to the net, it doesn't matter if the set sucks basically, Hinata will allways do his best to make it count because he values the effort the setter put into getting the ball up for him, just like Atsumu doesn't care if the receive it's off or sucks, he will always do the best to make the best set possible for their hitters, that's why he was moved. Kageyama realized this too, he asked Hinata to complain because he remembered that Hinata complained when he did a half ass set in their practice game, but Hinata responded "why? give the next one too" which mean, "why I would complain if you did your best? continue doing your best and give me another set and I'll make it count", now Kageyama feels the need to respond to him and do his best even thought he's at his limit, reason why Tanaka pointed out that not only your enemies can push you beyond your limits, your team mates can do it too, and in Karasuno, Hinata it's the only person who can put that much pressure in Kageyama.

When the inarizaki captain says "you could have followed up on that one" he is referring to Daichi who jumped for the attack. Its a difference in playstyle. Karasuno and by extension Daichi are always pushing the attack. Inarizaki's captain value's consistency, so he will focus on covering for his teammates mistakes. A nice parallel to the Jozengi match (The super wild and crazy team) where Daichi was the calm one. If you recall, in the past, when Hinata and Kageyama would fail their quick, it was Daichi who would often save it. Just like the Captain.

Both Daichi and Kita has the same personality "to not be surprised" and do exactly as their practice, as the foundation of the team. But Daichi with Karasuno spirit took the initiative to attack and innovate (kickstart the team when no one's there, syncro attack, etc.) So in a way Karasuno makes him embody the "we don't need the memories" motto

Kita's monologue about "geniuses" (better translated "prodigies" for western audiences, as the word genius is usually with regards to intellect and not technical skill), show why the Aoba Josai coach was wrong about Oikawa not being a "genius." The small clip of Oikawa was meant to show that every single time Kageyama improves, Oikawa puts more effort into his own development, and all this intentionality and effort is because of one simple fact: they love volleyball a bit more than everyone else (recall Osamu's words to Atsumu). It is not natural talent (Osamu had more of this than Atsumu), nor hard work alone (as Kita would probably be among the greatest, but isn't), but the LOVE OF VOLLEYBALL that makes someone become a genius. I cannot overemphasize how important this episode is for the overall philosophy of the series, because Furudate is intentionally subverting previous ideas back in season 1. This emphasis on the love of volleyball is expressed even in the title of the series itself: it is not "Haikyuu" but "Haikyuu!!"

Hey Coach, here's a way to tell the twins apart! Their concept is based on hot vs cold. Atsumu's name comes from the word Atsui, which means hot in Japanese. He's got warmer blonde hair+brown eyes, he's more hot tempered, more fierce and competitive. He's the setter. Osamu comes from the word samui, which means cold. He's got cooler tones ie gray hair+eyes, and he's calmer than his twin. He's the hitter.

"The Serene King" is the end of Kageyamas transformation arc. In the beginning he was a tyrant who just demanded his players conform to how he wants them to play. Then he got rid of that when he started listening to players. Atsumu called him a goodie two shoes because he just listened to his hitters without offering input. But now he is the Serene King where he will deny Tanaka's request because he knows that Tanaka is wrong and can hit more. Even the toss is a metaphor for this because its not too long not too short. Kageyama isn't too harsh or too soft anymore he is just right. Also Tanaka wanted to be like Bokuto in the training camp and has been low key working on hitting both cross and line shots so that he can be a hitter who can hit extreme options like Bokuto. When Inarizaki's Middle Blocker said he was "just a weaker version of Bokuto" he meant because he can only hit extreme cross. Now Tanaka can hit both and you can argue might be comparable to Bokuto.

I remember when I first watch this I wasn't able to digest well what Kita was saying hahah but after rewatching it the second time I just realized how beautiful it is (and I'm still amazed now that I've watched it few more times) cause it is true that there are people who are born talented but what we are seeing now is not just a product of their giftedness but the tremendous amount of hard work and dedication they'd put up to. So it is true that it is rude if we think they're genius (or gifted) cause it's like we're saying that they are only that good cause they were born like that and invalidate their efforts.

One of the most beautiful parallels in the whole anime is Oikawa’s interpretation of what Talent and Genius means vs. Kita’s interpretation of what Talent and Genius means. Oikawa initially thought talent was something that you had or didn’t have. But during their match against Karasuno at spring tournament qualifiers semis he grew to understand that talent, in a way, also meant to work to make your skill grow and bloom. This is in contrast to Kita, who describes it as a desire to work better and harder, and even goes as far as saying that telling talented people that they are ‘just geniuses’ is disrespectful to the work they put in. I definitely agree more with Kita’s philosophy but the point is that this show does such a great job at drawing parallels between mindsets, philosophies and personal situations. It’s one of the reasons I love it so much.

One thing I noticed is that with the twins' second 'Reverse' minus tempo quick, Osamu set the ball a little too high. I think it was due to Atsumu telling him in their previous reverse minus tempo that the set was a little low, so we see Osamu actually adjust his set(which does result in them not synching but it's still cool to see).

Kageyama's serve at 32:44 is something that he also learned from The Great King (K-Pop) Oikawa and I'm not talking about the technique, but the timing for it. Oikawa does this in episode 24 season 1 at minute 12, Aoba Johsai is at 32 - Karasuno 31 and he just served an amazing strong jump serve (around minute 8), so no one is expecting this one to be soft. Kageyama does the same thing here after scoring one ace and the defense line opening space in the middle of the court. He is always learning from his senpai hahaha

Coach, i think you misunderstood why Oikawa (k-pop) was "pissed". He wasn't jealous of Kageyama. He saw the set that Kageyama gave to Tanaka and knew that Kageyama changed, Kageyama finally managed to be the best setter he can be (because he wasn't always a good setter due to him being "a king"). Kageyama learnt to understand his hitters, something he couldn't do before, and Oikawa really saw that - so he felt competitive, not jealous. He sees that Kageyama is improving, and he feels that he needs to be even better than that to be the best setter there is

14:09 is an animation mistake. they reused the triple block animation Karasuno used against Shiratorizawa. I also found it very jarring while watching. But they luckily fixed it with the Season 4 Blu ray. I was not expecting them to because reused animation usually serves its purpose on its own. So the TV version shows them jumping for a triple block. but In the blu ray they actually fixed the timing and made kageyama jump first, tsukki almost making it a 2 man block, and Tanaka is barely in frame which showcases the fact that his reaction was a little slower than the rest. hence the sentence "one and a half blocker" right after that!

Coach Donny, I should let you know that the word "trust" in the Japanese manga version uses the Kanji "Threaten" and still reads "trust". Of course “Threat“ reads "threat" in Japanese too, but it gave a double meaning to what Tanaka was feeling and what Kageyama was doing. It was both "trust" and a "threat"

The way I interpreted the coach putting the captain in is that the Miya twins are “on point” offensively and doesn’t want them to worry about defense, otherwise it will “put the brakes” on them and lose their momentum. That’s why the captain is there to cover the defense so the twins can take more risks with their attack because it has been working.

I always thought the Serene King title referred to Tanaka because they made so many references to him finding restraint in himself and his volleyball play. With even Coach Ukai noting how he was on point and not going wild like he used to as the stress was continuing to build from Inarizaki. And then that bit at the end of that ridiculously clean line shot and the focus on his sister who’s also usually more rambunctious, just admiring in calm silence, the level her brother had reached. Same with Kageyama. I felt like those peace/calm expressions were brought on by Tanaka but yeah, that was just my read on the situation

Just a point about the comment of following up after Tsukki. The comment was about Daichi being able to follow on the miss and then a few minutes later we see Kita follow up on the twins' quick miss.

For me personally Kita's speech was what hit me hardest. It's so easy to look at someone successful and sigh wistfully that we'll never gonna be that talented, or maybe be envious and even resentful towards them, when in fact said successful person worked their blood sweat and tears just to get to where they're at. It's important to keep in mind that no one will be super good at something without hard work. Sense and talent can only get us so far.

I just realized, right after Oikawa was shown being frustrated/motivated by seeing the Kageyama-Tanaka play... we see Kageyama doing a powerful jump service ace then deceptively changing to a soft jump serve, something that Oikawa did against Karasuno during clutch match point (forgot if S1 or S2).

Kageyama's character development is so amazing. At first, he's like "I don't care about anything, just hit my damn toss" but as the time goes by, with the help of his teammates and coach, and of course by himself, he grew so much as an individual. He learned a lot. He trusted them more and adjusted for them. I totally feel happy when he said on season 2, "If they adjust for me, I'll adjust for them too" He started to think about his spiker's condition and push them to their limits because he know they can do it. He give them options where to spike. I know kageyama is harsh with hinata. But their first meeting and first official game against each other. He was overwhelmed and declared him as his rival. Even from the start, he saw something in hinata and trusted him even though he doesn't look like it (because he always have stern face😭) one of the reasons why I think they're the best partners. They're totally opposite in some ways, they both helped each other.

I love the last scene. Hinata doesn't complain about the bad pass from Kageyama, he instead is ready and even demanding more passes, even if they're bad. He just appretiates so much being able to spike that he'll give his all no matter the pass. And of course when you see somebody working this hard, as you said in the previous episode, that pushes you to try harder. That's why Tanaka says that about Kageyama, and that's why Atsumu is moved by Hinata. That pure and genuine happiness he feels playing and honestly being like "dude I don't care about your pass gimme the next one too" while smiling and enjoying the game is super touching

I remembered when I first read the chapter in the manga with Kita's speech, I ended up re-reading the whole chapter a couple times. The cuts from the ongoing set, intertwined with Kita's wisdom regarding talent, and followed by the exchange between Hinata and Kageyama and its significance was inspiring. As much as the second half of the episode was focused on Tanaka, Kageyama's development was definitely showcased within the second half. Especially in the end. The voice actors did such a great job with these moments. I especially appreciated Kita's voice actor in delivering the speech and Hinata's voice actor for expressing pure joy for the game and the expectation of Kageyama giving his best effort. The ending scene that discussed the battle between great setters intertwined with Kita's speech really helped to hit home and further develop one of defining themes not just in this match against Inarizaki but also within the entire series: hard work and talent. The theme was definitely developing whenever K-pop/Oikawa was prevalent, but season 4 really helped to show the prospective of the so-called 'geniuses' aka Atsumu and Kageyama. Even a so-called 'genius' begins at the bottom. They can only reach the top through hard work. Osamu may be just as talented, if not more, than Atsumu. But it is Atsumu who works just that much harder, putting extra time and care into the sport. It was why he was chosen to be part of the junior national team. And Kageyama may be a great volleyball player, but even he can be pushed to improve by both a fellow 'genius' (Atsumu) and those not regarded as geniuses (Karasuno). He is not infallible. Even he needs to improve.

Not sure if it had been mentioned and wasn’t certain you’d caught it, but the significance of Kageyama giving Tanaka that 2nd set for that 10/10 line shot after he’d goofed the first was that they were defending against Inarizaki’s match point. So not only did Kagsey set Tanaka on match point, but he then went right back to him after the first was stuffed solely because he wanted to drain every bit of potential out of his hitters as he saw they were capable of

coach, goddess of victory is a concept, mostly it means who will win, a metaphor, sometimes it means if you have a loyal female fan or even manager, who will do what she can outside of mach, it make her goddess of victory in japan because without her help it would be different. often used as metaphor in sports animes from commentator at the end of the match while it seems score is already known, but a miracle can happen.

27:09 I'm usually sure what's happening in Haikyuu! but not for this one, but I think he's relaxing himself because that play was so intense and could have gone wrong in so many ways that he was feeling overwhelmed with it. Other guess is he's acknowledging his own ability in his own way that he finally brought out the best in Tanaka that he couldn't do before.

I LOVE the "poetry," as you put it, in this episode. I can't think of a better way to put it myself. Daichi's spike hitting off Kita's hands right into the "We Don't Need the Memories" banner, Tanaka's leap of faith that continued the imagery of his breakthrough in episode 16, Kita's speech about geniuses and the beautiful parallels back to Oikawa's mantra of “Talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish." It's all so good. I love this series so much. In my personal opinion, everything that has yet to be adapted is EVEN BETTER than everything that has been adapted, so buckle up for those future seasons.

1. In Tanaka's line shot the soundtrack is called The Threat of Trust, another comment already explained about the translation in the manga. 2. When Kita says his last monologue, that also explains why in previous seasons people like Hinata, Kageyama, Bokuto and Ushiwaka (to name a few) are called Volleyball Idiots. BTW, Atsumu=setter, blond hair, explosive personality Osamu= wing spiker, white hair, calmer personality than his brother.
