How does the Model Y have a price tag close to Volvo's flagship sedan? It's $78,000 to over $90,000 for the EX90. And the Model Y is not really a 7 seater either. These cars aren't in the same category. The EX90, at least in price, is between the Model Y and Model X. These car that would be more comparable to the Y is Volvo's EX60, that's yet to come out. The Volvo is comparable to the Mercedes EQS SUV since that is more a 7 seater than an occasional one (most Ys aren't used as 7 seaters. Model Y is not a flagship, the Model X is and that's my biggest complaint about this comparison.

I love Tesla's technology, but it's quite laughable what they consider an SUV. The Model Y is just a slightly taller sedan. I like most of the content on this channel, but this review seemed designed from the start to give Tesla the win. If I'm looking for an SUV, I'm interested in towing, passenger space, and contiguous cargo space. I don't care much about assisted driving, charging, performance, and efficiency. I'll care about range only if the difference is significant. Total cargo space is great if you're talking about luggage or groceries, but the frunk isn't super helpful when I'm bringing bigger stuff home from IKEA or Home Depot. The Y's third row is a joke. Sorry, but the Tesla "SUVs" are worthless to me even if they were $20k. I've been hoping to replace my gas guzzling Navigator with the Cybertruck I've reserved, but may have to act sooner. The EX90, from what you've shown, looks like a real electric SUV. And not a sedan that's being called an SUV. So thank you for the review, even if it seemed biased.

Great comparison. I think it's a great looking car from the outside. I'm very surprised about its pricing especially given the size of the battery, trims, tech (lidars, sensors, chips) and size of this vehicle. $80k sounds a compelling offer for what you can get. But this is the first fully electric Volvos so I would probably wait for Gen 2/3 before buying one. If I'm in the market for a 7 seater, I'd still get a Model Y.

I don't want to be too critical as people want to see these comparisons. For all anyone knows it could be spot on. The Tesla will be improved by 2024. The Volvo may too. Tesla significantly raised prices while cutting production cost. If Tesla opted to it could lower prices significantly. Chances are when the Volvo is available in numbers the cost will be up. We see it on other EVs.

Tesla will be miles ahead in self-driving safety by the time the EX90 comes out. Other companies are taking an approach that let's you do more basic things really quickly but has a very low ceiling limiting how good it can get or what it can ultimately be capable of. Tesla has no such ceiling with their approach, though it's slower and harder initially. If you've done any sport, you'll understand the techniques beginners use get you results very quickly, but you will never be able to get to a high level. The techniques top professionals use are way harder to master initially, and at first you're way worse when you try using these techniques. But when you do master those techniques you will beat the pants off anyone who hasn't mastered them. Tesla is taking the approach that will lead to being the top performer, whereas everyone else is working on beginner techniques that will never ever get them there no matter how much time or money they throw at it.

@@truhartwood3170 Volvo isn't sitting still. Of course Tesla will move forward but so will Volvo. And Volvo/Polestar may be best of legacy autos at OTA updates. I also wouldn't be so confident that Tesla will lead in all categories over everyone as time goes on. I think Tesla is fine with its strengths and should work on its weaknesses, and that is getting the "car" part down more. That'll take time as they haven't been making cars for that long. Same thing with Lucid and Rivian but Tesla has been making cars longer that those two.
@truhartwood31702 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminsmith2287 what I see is Tesla moving faster than everyone else. So over the short term (5 years or so) their lead will grow before the law of diminishing returns catches up to them and other companies (the ones that still exist anyway) can start closing the gap over the subsequent five or so years. So I picture Tesla being in the lead for about 10 years based on what I'm seeing now.
@benjaminsmith22872 жыл бұрын
@@truhartwood3170 There are certain things Tesla isn't ahead at, though. Now, Kia and Hyundai beat Tesla at charging speeds. Lexus/Toyota have a far better implementation of the yoke from what is being reported by test drivers. Lucid, at least in number if not efficiency, has the highest range. So many have beaten Tesla to getting an EV truck out and Rivian has a true off-roader. Tesla has the production thing ahead but others will use megacastings as soon as 2 years from now. And if going against China, is BYD rather competitive? Maybe? Volvo isn't really trying to compete with Tesla and neither is Polestar. Polestar is trying to compete with Porsche and Volvo with BMW/Mercedes/Audi and still offer a bit of a lower price. They're trying to go all BEV on a time schedule. But they want to sell way less than Tesla says they want to sell. I think there are multiple scenarios for growth but the best thing for Tesla, IMO, is to refine the cars that they make now. They're doing some of that with tweaking the suspension and such but it takes a few generations to really get refinement down. Ride/handling compromise, body solidity, chassis rigidity, braking, things like that, fundamental car qualities beyond just quick steering and roadholding (like roadholding over broken and bumpy pavement) take a lot of work to get fluid. This is where the Germans do best but Volvo/Polestar do pretty well too.

You compare the existing car to the marketing blah-blah of the vehicle, which cant be bought in any visible numbers for at least 2 years. We don't know Model Y's performance in 2 years - especially batteries and driving assist systems. Obviously, it will be much better than now, and Volvo has to rise to the standard of Model Y from 2024, not 2022. The price in 2-3 years are an enigma. It looks like Model Y is getting highly optimized for production, and there will be at least 4 factories and huge production number in 2-3 years, like 2 m. So, it will fall in price. But Volvo XC90 is costly to build due to low numbers, more variants, crazy sensor suite, and a lot of licences to pay. So, it will be priced more like Model X. About 7 seaters. Model Y is a 5+2 car - not genuineal 7-seater. Model X and XC90 are. MX is a more performance car with wing-doors, Plaid, but also more space, so it should be more expensive than XC90, but still, these are cars to compare (as you partly do).

Excellent comparison, Jon. But by 2024 so much will likely improve with all Tesla's at the rate they are going today I just don't see how this Volvo will be able to compete. Also by then, Lidar may likely be obsolete and $80k will also likely be extremely over-priced for any EV, even with the nice features this Volvo offers. Volvo has always been a very safe but over-priced car in general, but with all the Chinese and Korean Models currently available and the future models, I'm afraid most consumers will find it nearly impossible to consider buying a Volvo this expensive by 2024. The economics just don't seem doable by 2024, a full 2 years from now(?)
