Good info. My 98 V70 uses the same mechanism, but it's a T50 instead of a T45. There should be adjusters inside the drum part of the disc, which can be accessed through the wheel bolt hole (lug nut for our American brethren) if there isn't a hole on the outer edge of said drum. Small screwdriver to turn the adjuster until it drags, then back it off slightly. Then adjust at the handbrake. This will stop any premature stretching of the cables, which are time consuming to replace (I know, as I've just replaced mine lol) It's good practice to inspect and service the shoes when replacing the rear discs (rotors for our American brethren) especially the expanders. Hope this additional info helps someone 🙏🏼

Nicely done! Volvo actually placed an access hole in the console so it doesn't have to be removed. I saw that door under the elbow rest the other day but it didn't register that it is for the parking brake. FF a week, and I discovered my parking brake shoes must be replaced. In my '98 S70, there is an access hole in the hubs near the edge, where the star wheel adjusters can be accessed, to fine adjust each wheel.

Hey Fred. I changed the oil on my 2012 TDI Jetta today. Full synthetic5W-30 I'll look for this in my compartment. LOL I use the parking break like Emmanuelle Seigner French actress In Frantic a 1986 American film., or Lt. Colombo with his Pugo, a French car.. It saves the Parking mechanism. I also use the triprotic shifter to save break pads. 95,000 miles no break change! It's my baby, expensive baby when things go wrong.

Shouldn't we adjust the parking brake pads first and then do the console adjustment? On my VW bus I have to bring the pads as close to the drum as possible without draging and then do the cable adjustment. Thanks for the video.

Good point.

Yes I believe you are correct. Adjust the parking brake shoes on each side using the star adjuster, then go for the overall amount the handbrake lever must be moved. If replacing the shoes, you may want to start by loosening the bolt shown here a few clicks, to allow the thick pads to fit in the hub. Then adjust each side, then go back and adjust the lever.

Hiya Fred on my 2007 s60 I did the adjuster mod inside the rear brake drum/disc. Makes life so much easier I don't know if it's the Same as the c70

Handbrakes should be set at 3 clicks and no more!

My other car is about 3-4. This one is starting to bite on 1-2 clicks. 5 is quite a pull. I will see how it goes. Dead easy to adjust. Normally its about half the travel of the lever on most cars. What i dont want though is any dragging on the shoes.

@@CB-RADIO-UK To stop drag adjust shoes with adjuster on the back of drums than adjust handbrake cable!

Not sure it has one as the main rear brakes are disk .

@@CB-RADIO-UK Sorry Fred, I thought you mentioned drums somewhere! If the caliper is not properly aligned with the rotor, a drag can occur. This is usually caused by a bent caliper mounting bracket or severely warped rotors and pads. To correct, visually inspect the alignment between the caliper and rotor. If the bracket is bent, replace as necessary but if you still have drag or brakes pull you may need to have your brake caliper replaced.

Volvos of this age have a set up where the brake discs also contain a drum hub with small shoes for the parking brake. Sadly the shoes are not self adjustable although you can buy a mod adapter piece which cures that.

Its NOT an emergency brake, the handbrake is meant to be applied whenever the car is parked or stationary and moving away again is not going to be immediate. Handbrakes never have been and never will be there as an emergency device!

@@stevefox3763 Wrong Karen, I was explaining you shouldn't cry like a baby over nothing. And just to let you know. It's not called a handbrake. It's called a Parking Brake.

Hi Steve. Its all the same.. "So, what makes an emergency brake different? It’s all in the name. Some automakers call it a parking brake, while some call it an emergency brake. While calling the auxiliary brake system a parking brake implies you use it every time you park your car, the name emergency brake implies it’s only for emergencies. The reality is that whether it’s called a parking brake or an emergency brake, it does the same thing and can be used in multiple scenarios".

@@CB-RADIO-UK it is there to secure the vehicle when stationary, that is what it was designed to do but the term E brake came from lazy Americans who think because they all drive Go Karts they can just put it in park and not use the handbrake and somehow think its there for only emergency's. The Locking mechanism in Auto boxes can fail through age but regularly shears off when the car is stuck by another vehicle when parked causing it to roll unrestricted were it would be brought to a standstill relatively quickly if the handbrake was applied. Aditionally, failing to use the handbrake when parking or when stationary for more than a few seconds in an automatic driving test in the UK will result in a fail just like it would in a manual test, it is NOT an emergency brake and is there for and should be used in regular driving. I would love to see those incompetent american drivers cope with what happens when they yank the handbrake up in an emergency, it will end badly lol. In my Manual, if i had brake failure, the instant reaction i would have is to slam it into a low gear and get maximum engine drag on the front wheels, i would then apply moderate pressure on the handbrake till it was stationary, the same but with less effect can be achieved with an auto, attempting to stop in an emergency with the handbrake is a very bad idea.
