I lived in Mecca on the Sunset Route. The SP 5000 series of steam locos were frequent visitors. What amazed me was their power. 120 cars trains with no helpers. Their signature of chuffing was unmistakable too.

Very awesome locomotive👍 Southern Pacific 5021 is one unique engine, i never realized the 4-10-2s were used for passenger service.

5021 one of my favorite 4-10-2's love how a model of her was used in sometimes they come back both in the flashback sequence and as the ghost train with N&W 1218's whistle.

The shorter stroke of 5021s middle cylinder can have nothing to do with the Gresley conjugated valve gear. That gear is designed to give the same travel to the centre valve as is present on the outside valves, which rather makes it nonsensical to use a shorter-stroke cylinder in the middle. I think it can only have been because of the much bigger balance weights that would have been required for the middle crank at full throw. I suspect the that the designers got the chills at the thought of such large weights thrashing round between the frames, and did their best to reduce it to acceptable proportions.

The shorter stroke can also been used to give the center connection rod proper clearance over the driving axle in the front of the crank axle, longer stroke needs a larger throw on the crank which means that the connection rod moves up and down over a greater distance. The outer cylinders are driving the third set of wheels, but I guess that the second drive axle is the crank axle, so the connection rod has to clear the first axle. This is also why the center cylinder is higher up ( clearly visible at 4:53 ) and on an angle so that it's centerline points towards the centerline of the crank axle.

I find it interesting that some of the U.S.'s locomotives had Gresley-designed valve gear.

Don’t be sorry for the rushed quality. Its short length at least reminds me of those videos by Train of Thought, and that’s good imo.

I think someone mentioned the 5021's role in _Sometimes They Come Back_ in the comments of part 3 of my Top 15 Movie Star Steam Locomotives before I had it reuploaded.

Great to learn about another three cylinder locomotive that also uses Gresley conjugated valve gear in the US. Would be nice to see this giant back on excursion trains.

from what i have heard from the wiki they said that it was the real 5021 with a smoke machine and a diesel pushing it in the movie

Nice videos, Jim. Keep up the good work. Now will you ever do a video about 1225’s shedmate Chicago and Northwestern 175, or do you think it’s weird story is not interesting enough?
@Jimboliah39856 ай бұрын
I know nothing about the engine, so probably not.

@@Jimboliah3985 175 is an R-1 class, a go-anywhere machine, not unlike those GWR 1400’s and LMS Black 5’s I think you’re a lot more familiar with. She’s also the very last surviving CNW locomotive to have Walschaerts, whereas every other survivor have internal Stephensons. She pulled one excursion in 1957 and then was used as a stationary boiler. A man named Clint Jones, who very recently passed away, btw, purchased 175 in 1964, and he was only 20 years old at the time! After a failed restoration attempt by Jones, 175 was basically neglected in the outdoor elements from 1972 all the way until 2017, when the SRI bought her. Right now, they’re in the process of restoring her. Now will you think about studying her?

Shloud 5021 be fired up? Yes
@threepea11518 ай бұрын
You missed a lot of things, Southern Pacific was going to donate a Cab Forward and possibly a Mountain to RailGiants if they didn’t fire up 5021 Also 5021 didn’t sustain any damage, it wasn’t dropped that’s a myth
