I may be skimming, but I notice a lot of the Volumetric Displays have a Dome around them, is that to reflect light around the dome or to restrict it to a certain region? What would it look like without the dome?
@VoxonPhotonics
@VoxonPhotonics 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, the dome is just there to protect the screen. We are moving a screen at high speed and projecting 4000 images per second and synchronising the images noto the screen as it moves. When people see it, they just want to put their fingers in to 'touch the hologram' but they don't realise there's a screen there. It works well without the dome and there's then no light being reflected off the top. We usually leave the dome on though when in a public space. Hope this helps to clarify...

From all these demo, I see two things that could be added to this system... first is why not user interact by touching the dome? the expensive solution could be capacitive dome or optical cameras inside the dome with synced shutter speed.. cheapest would be camera outside the dome (maybe better if above the dome).. second, due to persistence of vision, everything here seems transparent.. sometimes occlusions are necessary for observations or puzzle type games.. I dunno if my idea works but instead of using flat screen, how about try using textured screen which restrict the reflection angle of each voxels.. I imagine it's like bubble wraps but tiny concave dots.. It might require multiple projectors though...

@@Luka1180 What is a TRUE volumetric display? I don't really know because it seems to be so new term. I guess you mean a TRUE hologram, with just light particles in the air creating the 3D image. This kinda volumetric display might have few flaws: you can't see the display from lower angles below the screen side, second being if you put your hand in there it might hurt either you or the display. But I think his is something new and maybe useful for visualizing 3D objects better in real space.

How is this effect achieved? Is the image projected onto the glass, or is there some sort of gas within the dome that the image is projected through?

No gas. We project around 4000 slices of a 3D scene every second onto a diffuser screen. The volume is "3D printed" using light 30 times per second.

One question How does it work
@VoxonPhotonics
@VoxonPhotonics 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for asking - it's a great mix of precision engineering and software. This is a swept surface 3D volumetric display. Geometry that is being rendered is sliced up into hundreds of digital horizontal cross sections before being projected synchronously onto a specially designed high speed reciprocating screen. As the photons of light hit the screen, they are diffused and reform a physical cross sectional image at precisely the right place in physical space. Through persistence of vision, the human eye blends hundreds of layers together, and the result is a true three-dimensional (3D) volumetric holographic representation of data that can be viewed in the same way as one would view a real object, from any angle, and without special effects, goggles or glasses...

@@pumpuppthevolume There's been 3D phone screens for almost a decade. They're all lenticular, and that's not what a volumetric display is. tilt your Red phone and the depth is gone. only 1 viewer, or off axis viewers have to position themselves accurately to get any effect rather than nausea. In a volumetric display, any number of viewers are viewing the same one projection. LowLight, I don't think you're considering the electromechanical design of this thing. It's not for your pocket right now.

@Jun Ouyang As I mentioned earlier, it's actually really quiet :) It's oscillating but not using a huge force, just resonance - therefore it's actually efficient & quiet. You can see a video here where sound is included: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIe8oIqprdZ-bsk - in a big event you can't even hear it. In a quiet room you can hear it but it's still a 'low level conversational noise' usually around 55db. Short life? Nope...

Why the display isn't touchscreen? Were the 4k content? Why poor games? Why it doen't support 4k games like XBOX ONE X and PS4 pro? Why so tiny screen?
@VoxonPhotonics
@VoxonPhotonics 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Michel, in answer to your questions: 1) It isn't a touchscreen because it's a swept surface 3D volumetric display (Geometry that is being rendered is sliced up into hundreds of digital horizontal cross sections before being projected synchronously onto a specially designed high speed reciprocating screen. As the photons of light hit the screen, they are diffused and reform a physical cross sectional image at precisely the right place in physical space. Through persistence of vision, the human eye blends hundreds of layers together, and the result is a true three-dimensional (3D) volumetric holographic representation of data that can be viewed in the same way as one would view a real object, from any angle, and without special effects, goggles or glasses). We put a touchscreen on the side of the unit for you to use though. 2) Because it's 3D, it is more than 4k! The resolution is 1000 x 1000 x 192 which is approx equivalent of about 96k. 3) The games are cool, you should try them one time, 4) Again, it's a 3D volumetric display, not a 2D screen, it can support any 3D games made in Unity etc, 5) the current screen size is small but still the most advanced volumetric display in the world. We can make it bigger but we wanted to have our first product being a product that was interactive and social, where people can gather around and discuss what they are seeing... I think you have to see it, the you'll understand, as it's hard to get a 3D display to look as good as it can when you are looking at it on a 2D screen...

Would it not be easier to project the image from underneath onto a single rotating helix instead of a flat plane moving up and down? I am sure the mechanical stresses involved would far less and the display could be made much larger and much cheaper.
@VoxonPhotonics
@VoxonPhotonics 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, we can do that as well... It's definitely easier (although mathematics is harder to synchronise 4000 images per second with a helical display) and we can have it running at 40Hz so no flicker at all... But there's also a few downsides with that type of display as well... So, pros and cons with certain use cases suiting one and not the other. Anyway, you can see a little more of this near the end of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGi5YWiKaambqLc
