He became a loyal member of the particular society where he landed. He spoke of a war among the nations on the planet, saying that “we” engaged in such and such against enemies. Reverse the situation, with aliens coming to Earth and landing in the United States, it would be very un-PC today to depict them take America’s side in anything. (To do so for our enemies, however…)

@@michalperach984 I highly recommend watching it, as someone who loves The Inner Light. This episode absolutely feels like an homage to that one, and you don't really need any knowledge of Voyager except the basic premise to appreciate it. I think it's not just some of the best that Voyager has to offer, but some of the best Trek as a whole does. Voyager has its issues and I'd say it had the wildest quality swings of any Trek from that era, but when it nails it, it does it in a way no other Trek does. This is one of those episodes.

Considering the humanoid species of the galaxy were seeded by a progenitor race in Trek Lore, it stands to reason there would be certain patterns common to humanoid spoken language that would make it possible, with millions of examples and the input and influence of linguists from multiple species, to auto-translate the transmission. Non-humanoid languages likely pose a challenge to the UT, although they have examples of those as well that could be helpful to work with. At any rate it helps that 24th century computers are so fast.@@MichaelThe-Pyro

Yeah, the idea that the Prime Directive should stop them from responding is absurd. The whole point of the Prime Directive is to ensure that pre-warp cultures aren't exposed to the existence of the greater galactic community and to avoid cultural contamination, but the people on this planet are already fully aware that at least some civilization exists that can travel through space and their culture has already been effected by it. Refusing to respond at this point seems meaningless. Sometimes the Prime Directive is taken way too seriously. Most Federation captains would apparently be totally fine with condemning billions to painful death if a pre-warp civilization with billions of people found their planet dying, rather than make contact and save them.

If you enjoyed this episode of Voyager, and especially the concept, please read the book Dragon's Egg. It is the book from which this concept from lifted, and the book is one of the most phenomenal pieces of hard science fiction I've ever read. The book centers around a human expedition to a passing neutron star, upon the surface of which lives a race of miniscule 12-eyed sapient plasmoids called the Cheela. They are amazingly and delightfully alien, and the cultural exchanges toward the end of the book are beautiful.

They said earlier that 1 day on the planet is 1 second on voyager. That's 86,400x times faster. Assuming they understood the spectrum properties of different bands, they'd know to use a relatively high frequency transmission to penetrate the atmosphere without the signal bouncing. If that's higher than around 3MHz the signal would transition into infra-red. At that point it is no longer possible to receive as regular radio regardless of the equipment.
@edinfific2576
@edinfific2576 Жыл бұрын
Actually, below 3MHz can also penetrate the atmosphere. 3-30MHz is reflected back. And since it was the first radio signal they've used, it was early development which was likely low enough freqency to translate into UHF or even higher, and Seven may have used "Ultra-High" merely as a description instead of an Earthly specification.

I love these situations where there aren't obviously good or bad choices. When they had to choose whether to separate Tuvix, when Archer had to decide whether to create a short-lived clone of Trip to save his life, when there were people living on a planet about to be destroyed and they refused to be evacuated, when they were planning to send Hugh with a "virus" to destroy the Borg... One could argue either way and not be right or wrong. Star Trek had several of those over the years. I much prefer those stories rather than the stereotypical good-vs-evil like Dukat, Ru-afo and Shinzon.

This is one of the best, if not the best, episodes in this series.

I watched more voyager than TNG because my dad bought the entire vhs set when I was 10. Episodes like this make it my favorite Star Trek series to this date.

Fantastic episode, imho. One of my favs of the series. I find time travel in sci-fi has been overused to the point that it is little more than a sci-fi cop out. But this version of it seems plausible(ish)... and really works for me(ish). Thank you for posting this video. You seem to make great choices to post. BTW - this is a great example of why I think Starfleet was incredibly selfish to watch pre-warp species. Even if their intentions were benign. If Starfleet is SO big on not interfering with other worlds like this? Then stay away from them completely. Curiosity is not enough of a justification for risking tremendous damage to a pre-warp species. ☮

The signal is amplitude modulated. That is AM radio. Slow it down so we can hear the transmission. "Big Marty sells carpet cheaper."

Great episode but it always bothered me a bit why they didn't just wait in that solar system a little while longer, until the planet evolved so far they could solve the time issue and help them with some warp >9.9+ tech to get them get home a lot faster.

Not a Voyager fan, but I really liked this episode, and how it depicted a society evolving through time.

A follow up episode about these people would have been pretty cool, like they catch up to them in the next season super advanced
