To experience the sunset 30 mins after the base the building would have to be 15 times its current height. It currently stands at 2722 ft. 15 times that would be 40,830 ft. StopFear No, tension and newtons 2 and law will make earths gravity at the base still compensate for spaces force outward
@Milesco
@Milesco 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on how tall it is and where the center of gravity is. It is theoretically possible to build a tower that is so tall that centrifugal force counteracts its weight (or _more_ than counteracts its weight), rendering the tower weightless or even having negative weight. In that case, the foundation of the tower, instead of "supporting" it, would actually be holding it down. And if it were to fail, the tower would fly off into space.
@Milesco
@Milesco 7 жыл бұрын
No, centrifugal. They're actually two sides of the same coin. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In any system where tension is being placed on a rope or similar structure, the forces that create the tension pull in both directions. If I tie a rope around a tree and pull on it, the tree is pulling back (in the opposite direction) with equal force. So if an object is "suspended" in space from a tether point on the surface of the earth such that the spin of the earth causes it to want to fly away and put tension on the tether, that tether is experiencing both centripetal and centrifugal force. The object's inertia pulls on the tether (centrifugal force). The tether is pulling it toward earth and keeping it in a circular orbit (centripetal force). Because the forces are balanced, the object stays in its circular path around the earth. Since I'm talking about that aspect of the tensile forces that is pulling away from earth, the correct term would be centrifugal force.
@Milesco
@Milesco 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, taylo, I get that. My father was an engineer, and he explained this concept to me when I was a kid. I understand exactly what you're saying. The moving object, if it were allowed to go free, would not fly directly outward from the center of rotation. It would go in a straight line at a tangent to the circle, which is at a 90 degree angle to the center of rotation. But *_because_* you have to pull the object toward the center in order to make it go around in a circle, the object has the effect of pulling away from the center with the same force. (In order to avoid repeating myself, I refer you back to my “two sides of the same coin” discussion above.) The tether that connects the object with the center of rotation would feel itself stretched - a force pulling on it toward the center and an equal force pulling in the opposite direction. The inward force is centripetal, and the outward force is centrifugal. Yes, as I said, if you were to release the object from its tether, it wouldn’t fly directly away from the center, but instead would travel on a tangent to the circle. But as long is it is traveling in a circle, it is indeed pulling on that tether in a directly outward direction, just as the center is pulling on the object in the inward direction with equal force. I think it’s clear at this point that we both understand the physics of it - we’re actually in agreement, I think, and in fact, my responses to you are really for the benefit of others reading this, so they can fully understand the concept. It’s really a matter of semantics. But as you said, centrifugal force appears quite real to the object being rotated (and indeed, it’s how centrifuges work), so I think my original comment about centrifugal force counteracting a [super-tall] tower’s weight is still valid.
@vanessita120

Following your thoughts : ''.. The object's inertia pulls on the tether (centrifugal force). The tether is pulling it toward earth and keeping it in a circular orbit (centripetal force). Because the forces are balanced, the object stays in its circular path around the earth.'' Would it somehow affect earth's rotation speed?
