Today we start building the 1965 VW Beetle. It's been sitting in a field in South Georgia for over 40 years. It's rusty, crusty and down right nasty. Let's see if we can bring it back to life!

Great work. I am myself one of the man with the idea of diy everything in a restoration. But for saving time and my health, i use some tools for taking out pivots and ball joints. Not the hamer. It consuming energy and time. Also, is better to clean somehow the dirt of the pieces first thing, repeat, first thing before dismantle, because will be easy to take off. That is my opinion, in what i do for my restoration projects.

Get yourself a spot welder. I would spot weld that seam in your top and bottom patch. Or I would have folded that top patch and welded it to the bottom. And since you cut that cancer out, spray some POR in that space. If you don't have it, get some OEM tools tie rod and pitman arm removers. Or a torch to heat where the tie rod connects. And I know WD40 has been used for decades, get with the 21st century and get PB or some Kroil. That stuff works wonders. I hadn't been here in a while jacking around with my projects. Keep the fun coming CT.

Type 1 archeology is always fun to watch. Never know what you'll dig up when cleaning the underbelly. You found a transaxle and a front beam. Nice! My Dad gave me an auto panel gauge welding tip years ago where he would use a shot of compressed air for every weld spot immediately after to defend against any warping. Time consuming but worked like a charme.

Best design engine ever. Looking at the engine your seeing mostly a heat shroud which had a fan in it to circulate air to cool the engine. This little engine ran very hot but never too hot to run, but you needed to change the oil every 3,000 mile, it would be burnt, black as coal. If we had this synthetic oil back then this problem would have been solved. I drove my new 2011 Sienna Toyota, using synthetic oil, 100,000 miles with constant watching the oil for level and break down. I have 180,000 now and car performs like new.

Spot welding is ok but you should try doing some fill welds. Drill a hole in one side and fill it up. Makes for a very strong weld. You could have doubled up that 18 gauge and put in stronger metal than came out. As it is by cutting back so far you made a weak spot in the frame. If you're going to fix it fix it stronger, not weaker. A thing I was taught by a jerk but a good lesson.

Hello friend, very good work for a beginner in reforms, your knowledge is improving for sure, in this work the lower part has already given a good difference in relation to the upper one, as they say "repetition makes mastery", I follow this resurrection this VW from the beginning, it will be exciting to see it run again, Success!

Dear CT, Well we have to say that you made the bone of the chassis of this Beetle very acceptable for welding the bottom plates to the chassis and we think you finally will manage to get the chassis in the some or even better condition as what you’ve realized with the VW Karmann Ghia. We wish you lots of success with this project and wish you, Cyn and your complete family all the happiness of the world plus we send you ❤️ from the Netherlands. Best regards, WIlleke and Dick de Graaff

Open up the gap between the pieces you are butt welding you'll get better pennatration and be able to blend it easier . Over lap your patch and use cut off wheel and plunge cut to fit . That should give you the gap .

Had a 64 and I had it rebuilt and did a lot of work myself, the interior was black and paint was black cherry. It was out of the garage and came a hail storm with hail as big as baseball’s needless to say it totalled it completely and I haven’t the energy to do another, I really put my heart and soul into it and was really hurt when they totalled it.

Repairs on primary chassis-parts have to be full-welded. Maybe even oxygen/gas-welded like the factory manual describes for Beach-buggy shortening off the frame. Gas-welding. Those fender Butt-welds are no god on the main frame Ct. Sorry, it’s a “do it again”. 👍👍👍
