That stash of tools that you have acquired over the years certainly comes in handy. Who would have thought that one man could have so many vice-grips!!! :-) Chris Gatineau, Quebec, Canada

A man of patience, you are! I would have gone berserk, folded that piece of tin up into 30 folds stomped on it, drove over it, said the heck with it and filled in the holes with DAP house caulk. Good job!

Many VWs in my motorhead history. 1962 sunroof beetle, 1966 splitty window Bus, 1976 window Bus, 1973 Convertible Super Beetle, 1974 411...what a mess, sure wish you were around when I was working on this one! But I got them all running and driving and down the road they went--with a small profit along the way!

Having done restoration work just like this, perhaps folks will now understand the cost of doing such work.... and why restored vehicles are so expensive. And this is for work that is "just ok." Meaning not concourse judged. I've done both, I no longer do either. Mustie1, you have kept me up till dawn too many times....

When filling or let's say body work use dynaglass instead of bondo dynaglass does not crack over time like bondo. Also use butyl sealer in the window frame along with the rubber seal it helps seal better and will keep it from rubber squeaks coming from the seal during certain temperature conditions.

I'm going to have to try and do this some day when I can afford it.. Our Kombi was in an accident (not our fault, someone T Boned my hubby and the Kombi rolled over) anyway.. the windscreen popped out and the rust around the window is shocking.. bit embarrassing that the windscreen just fell out in one piece.. even after the car rolling over.. no windows broke.. so weird! we lost a side mirror and worst luck the firemen cut the steering wheel off.. dammit.. those things really cost heaps to buy.. Hubby and daughter were fine after the accident but damn.. the car is pretty wrecked. probably should give up on it.. but.. we've had it for so long.. love that car too much.. gonna hold onto it for a bit... see how it goes..
@jameshengl52309 жыл бұрын
Nice job getting the patch panels to fit. How long did it take you to bend the patch panels to fit?Keep up the great work Darren.
@pixiepqueen7 жыл бұрын
had our van since 1993 and it got crashed into and rolled! the other day. Thankfully my hubby and daughter came out of the car accident fine. A lady drove through a give way sign and t boned them. When the accident happened the windscreen just fell out.. it was so rusty that the windscreen just popped out and fell onto the road all in one piece.. I've never heard of that happening before.. everyone is expecting us to get rid of the car now.. I have very futile thoughts of trying to fix our car.

"Five years from now I may look at this and be like, wow... but then again five years ago I would have been like, wow" I loved that! The written word does not do that bit of wordplay justice. Way to wrestle a piece of poop into some semblance of a windshield gutter! I'm saying "wow!"

That seat and steering wheel look pretty darn good , throw something over them before you finish your beauty of a welding job! ; )
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
damn I think you have more vice grips than me. I usually would weld in the section you vice gripped with hole punch plug welds then just lapped the bottom.
@reiserdog7 жыл бұрын
As a kid I had only an oxyacetylene welder. No migmags etc.. And I welded with it a LOT. And I mean welding, not brazing. This is the exact example where I could do pretty good job with it fast. Red hot steel obeys much better. But welding large flat areas took ...some practice. Also welding "tissue steel" is much easier/possible with OA :D

Very nice to see someone doing quality work, but just takes too long. I would have used 20 minute drywall mud, it sets fast, sands easy, and holds paint after 30 or 40 coats. That is the most vicegrips I have ever seen at one time.
