Thanks Bjorn, great vid as usual. I have an ID.3 for the last week and love it so far, Haven't had the phantom slowing up yet, but noticed it a lot on my last car which sometimes used to pick up the speed sign from a side road, especially if the road was at an angle and you could clearly see the reduced speed limit sign yourself. In Ireland the base is €7K cheaper than the Plus which is €7K cheaper than the Max. The Base ID.3 I think is great value at just over €33K, €4K cheaper than an Ioniq and over €7K cheaper than a Kona. It's about the same price as a fairly basic new Golf Diesel with 120HP.

Great test. The consumption is not about rim size, it's only about weight and width of the tyre (if the rims have similar aerodynamic design). So in this case the tyres has the same width and probably a similar total wheel weight which makes the difference ignicificant. Your test just proofs that. 👍👍
@tbnzet4 жыл бұрын
Yes, and even weight almost doesn't matter at a constant speed. See e.g. Bjørn's test of the Model S with lightweight 19" rims that have higher consumption than the heavier 19" slipstream rims.
@catalicos4 жыл бұрын
So, basically, wider wheels increase the consumption because of the bigger rolling resistance. But since they've put the same width tires on all 3 specs, with just a shorter profile, it will impact comfort in suspension and probably noise. To me, the 19" on the Plus look and feel the best. I've gone and test driven the Plus and really I thought it had the 18" wheels on it, just by ride comfort. Looking forward to all results. Thanks!
@7spower9984 жыл бұрын
6:50 Bjørn, the 20 in wheels are noisier because they are riding on 45 series tires vs 18 in 55 series tires. The 45 series tires are much shorter on the sidewall and therefore transmit more road noise and less comfort. 11:34 The 55 series tires which have taller sidewall and therefore transmit less road noise and gives greater comfort. Hi Bjørn. Thanks for your good videos. On this, I would like to state that then conclusion on then tire size could be more sharp. On the ID3 the tire are both 215, both for the 18” and 20” so then air resistance of the wheel is the same. On the Taycan it goes from 225 to 245, and that increases by 20mm on all 4 wheels and thereby results in a higher consumption. Hight of the rubber is giving the better feel and less sideway movements in curves. Again, thanks for your great videos. Looking forward to see the ID 4 and Skoda Enyaq tests, as they are most appealing to me.

I really want to see the 77kWh version tested. Regarding resetting the trip computer, I’m really surprised there’s not a way to do it in the gauge cluster like there is in every other VW. Typically you can swipe through different trip settings on the steering wheel buttons, then click and hold the center “OK” button. I’m also a little disappointed in the ID.3 efficiency. 210wh/km is worse than a Model 3 Performance with 20” wheels and even wider 235/35R20 Pilot Sport 4S tires. I am shocked a vehicle so much less powerful, lighter, and running aero-focused wheels and using somewhat eco-focused tires is only capable of 210wh/km. That translates to 338wh/mi which is as bad as I see in my Model 3 Performance in winter going that fast. I typically average 290-310wh/mi (180-195wh/km) at 75mph (121km/h) in normal dry weather.

Have you tried slipstreaming behind a Fernbus or LKW? I don't see many of them on the roads in your videos but in Germany the Autobahns are full of these larger vehicles. With Adapative Cruise Control you could could travel at near 100km for hundreds of kilometres behind these and consumption goes down dramatically. If slipstreaming behind a truck at 130w/km then you'd beat the range at 90km suggested by ABRP and close the gap in journey time at 120km because you wouldn't be stopping at charging stations every 160 kilometers. My range in a Zoe which performs very poorly at high speeds improves considerably when tailing a big lorry. I don't mind tailing one as long as they have mudflaps which cover the rear wheels. It'd be easier to tail a truck in a car which has Adaptive Cruise Control like the e208 which I've ordered based mainly on the experiences you had with it while testing. Thanks.

Without anything in front the consumption at the same speed was 3.3kWh/100km higher. I tested over 40km outbound and the same back again at about 19 degrees in dry conditions. By adding some slipstreaming to a trip I am confident I can travel 300KM in a Zoe ZE40 faster than if I were to stop for a charge at 22KW. That's enough to get to Cologne or Munich from where I am. Slow and boring but still faster than stopping at a charging station.

Interesting as ever! Speed limit sign recognition/in car displays seem to be a bit, err, unreliable. Similar in my Toyota car - but there are lots of problems with badly positioned signs, signs obscured by vegetation etc on roads I use. Even displayed signs on the back of trucks in front are sometimes a problem. With regard to the tyres used, a quick browse suggests that Michelin PS4 at that size are not good for rolling resistance - grade E, by the look of it. Some all-season, or at least Summer only brands can get down to grade A (e.g. Continental eco contact), or at least B. It’s roughly 3 or 4% difference in energy loss between grades. Obviously more important at lower speeds, compared with higher speeds when air resistance is more relevant.

So how does this work then. Bigger rims are heavier is that it . Or is it because of tire Ratio size.. So meatier of thicker tire wall has more give or it is softer.! .. Can it be just thread pattern.? Or because tire has bigger circumference and thread pattern is not optimised for rolling resistance to get most out of it fir EV can that be a contributing factor?
@Gresteh4 жыл бұрын
Bigger rims usually have a bigger tire circumference and often a wider profile, but that's not the case for the ID.3 as all rims have the same circumference, tire width and the same thread pattern,... the biggest differences are that bigger rims have more unsprung weight and the tire has less rubber so it has less flexibility... and in top of that the options in the car make it heavier (panoramic roof, HUD, electrically adjusted seats)

The only thing that comes to my mind is motor efficiency curce. If wheel/ tire is bigger it has more circumference, and motor max efficiency point is not reached. @mrjoe123454 жыл бұрын
@@Ray88G You mean the tire bulging outwards under load? I guess that isn’t too much of an issue with high sidewall tires as long as you keep the pressure at the recommended value. Bjørn Nyland yes, at high speeds it has very little effect compared with aerodynamics, but it has some effect as it increases rolling resistance. What? That is not a real thing. There are cities here in Germany who have Soo much income from speeding tickets (more than tourism) they would never let that go. Also I have driven many cars with speed sign recognition no one was really working good. Mercedes has the best one but it still bugs a lot. No way

I just can't see any upside in having wheels which are larger than what the car was designed for, appearance only? They're heavier, more expensive and reduce ride comfort.
@mrjoe123454 жыл бұрын
With some cars you get wider tires if you go for larger wheels. So if you wanted better traction, you’d have to go for larger wheels. On the downside, the car‘s efficiency decreases though. On the ID3 the large wheels are really for looks only. Though I saw in the configurator (it was the standard ID3 in Germany, not the 1st) that you get regular tires for the 18‘‘ wheels, all season tires with airstop (whatever that is) for 19‘‘ wheels and regular tires with airstop for 20‘‘ wheels. So if you care about the standard tires, your choice would depend on wheel size.
@tbnzet4 жыл бұрын
As 20" comes as a standard or option it is of course designed for the car by VW. Wheel size choice is mostly up to taste.

This electric cars are HEAVY. The base ID3 is as heavy as my Sharan with 7 seats (60cm longer, 17cm higher, 10cm wider). I wonder how much those ultra--low rolling resistant prototypes will affect efficiency once we get them on the market. And how much our loved quiet and comfortable but higher rolling resistance ones will lower the range. PS: EV owners should really take to have proper inflation pressure.
@bjornnyland4 жыл бұрын
But EVs, despite being heavy, only use about 25 % of the energy of a fossil car (equivalent to about 1-2 l/100 km).

Nobody care about Tesla car color bullshit on display. Speed limits are by the map? I know maps are not updated. I thought there is camera which detect actual road speed signs? Some lucky drivers get their cars with Continental or Goodyear. They could be quieter. Or even economical.
@bjornnyland4 жыл бұрын
Nope, speed limit is not by map. 6 years ago before the motorway was built, it was 80 zone all the way there. The ID3 detected 60 and 90 zones randomly.
