Cleaning EGR valve without dismantling on 2005 1.9tdi 150 pd Seat Leon FR mk1. Identical or similar procedure on all VAG VW Golf, polo, passat / Audi a3/ Skoda / Seat 1.9 tdi engines. We used Wynns Diesel EGR Cleaner. Leads to smoother running engine, more power, better fuel economy. It's done about 134,000 miles now on a 53 plate, never missed a service and I've not really had any major problems upto now touch wood. I had to replace the passenger window regulator back along when the electric window jammed but that's about it. They are good cars, had mine for about 8/9 years now.

areyoumad4it I used to have 1.8t with about 60k on the clock then got diesel 150pd with which had about 127k when I got it. For the most part they're reliable cars with common issues normally relatively simple to identify. My petrol one had a new window regulator as well- also exhaust. Other than that it was fine. On high mileage diesel EGR clean highly recommended.

a good idea. I cleaned the skoda fabia in this way. I recommend using a toothbrush inside the EGR. but be very careful! I flooded the combustion chamber cleaner! you can damage the engine! if the engine does not start, remove the spark plugs and blow out the combustion chamber.

Yeah it's 100% the engine oil can, item 11 in my owners manual, chapter 2.19. Unfortunately it was serviced by the main dealer in October and it looks like they may have only done half a job! I guess a sensor can just go anytime though. Il try and find a video of how to replace that now lol. Really appreciate you getting back to me, many thanks!

Yeah if you taking it to main dealer you expect them to advise if anything likely to go or need replacing at that age/mileage. True though that senors could go any time. How many miles has it done? I think main dealer is usually bit of a rip off to be honest you better off building up relationship with a good indepndent garage especially with an older car.

There are three ways of doing this depending on how much you love your own car. 1. You barely appreciate your car: Use a cleaning product to force residues onto the engine, risking damage being made to the internal componentry. 2. You appreciate your car (to some degree): Remove, clean and reassemble, risking damage to the EGR valve be made during a non approved cleaning process. This could probably lead to EGR once back in the engine to again fail requiring further cleaning and/or replacement. 3. Best practice (in my view): Replace EGR with new to ensure once back in the car this will properly work for a long service period and reduce (not completely remove functionality) the amount of gas recirculation so that the EGR maintenance interval is enhanced keeping functionality using in case of VAG group VAGCOM.

Wouldnt it have been a whole lot easier to remove the intake pipe altogether so you could see what you was doing and not struggling ???

Thanks for this Guide Brother , just wanna ask you , i got 2011 octavia 1.9 tdi , just like your engine , i can see the oil inside my EGR valve , just like you , and etch time i clean it , and drive the car , i see the oil come back , is it normal for this engine?btw i notice oil leak in the end of EGR valve ( when i drive hard i notice drope in oil )

i have a vw jetta 1.9tdi 2006, very low mileage 37000 miles legit. its a weekend car hardly drive it. when i do engines warm etc when i punch the gas pedal cloud of black smoke comes out of exhaust but no smoke while idle or under normal driving condition. took it in for dignostics no fault codes turbo egr working in spec. guy said take it out for long drive its prob carbon build up. what do you think? Thanks

Any chance you doing a video that shows the audi a3 1.9tdi pd105. Watched a few of ur videos. But cant find a decent showing slowly step by step how to remove. Not how to remove once all bolts are already undone cheers

Hi, Would like to clean mine on the he Bora (280,000 miles) seemed a bit sluggish so changed air flow meter and now a lot better, so now might have a go at this as I'm sure it would be well gummed up...got one of those vag-com readers and its coming back with the following fault '19561 valve intake manifold flap (n239) open or short to ground p3105' just wondering if you seen this before? the small pipe that attaches to the top of the valve is damaged also any ideas what you call this so i can order a new one? Would this method not send all the soot and blank gunk through your engine or turbo, resulting in valve damage or some sort of damage?

***** Hey, thanks for your comment. The spray doesn't dislodge big parts of carbon, it dissolves it into a liquid. Soot and carbon is constantly passing through your engine on a car fitted with EGR system. As for your turbo, the turbine is being driven by exhuast gases. This is method is not going to damage your valves at all. Redline Revs Thanks for the reply.. I watched that video today after this one, good clear instructions on how it's done but I went and took the easy way with the Wynns spray through the air intake and a dose of Millers ecomax in the fuel tank. (I'm a complete novice under the bonnet so didn't fancy tackling the EGR). Problem was,My car wouldn't start for 4 days after getting p0101 code on diagnostics, I changed the MAF sensor, still no start. Checked the anti shudder valve and it was stuck so I pushed it back down and hey presto, car started first pop and is driving better with the new MAF.. The Anti Shudder Valve was caked in suit and grime which was causing it to stick, WD40 helped to loosen the dirt and it's now clean and working properly. I don't know how my EGR looks inside but car feels more responsive and healthy.. These videos are a real help btw. Cheers bud.

***** Glad you got it sorted, not so much a novice now! If your ASV was caked up, wait till you see the EGR valve and inlet manifold.. The ASV is the clean side of the two. You could probably do with tackling that EGR more thoroughly at some point. I recently deleted mine and replaced with race pipe, makes a world of difference, but half the footage was corrupted on my memory card! If you can bring the car to West London I'm looking to delete EGR on a volunteer 1.9tdi for the channel.. Thanks for your support and glad you found the videos helpful.

Redline Revs I dread the thought of what's in that EGR but I will get it done soon. Unfortunately I'm in Belfast, Ireland, so West London would be a bit of a hike for me but I appreciate the offer. Is there any downside to an EGR delete?

Down side is losing the anti shudder valve which, could help stop a runaway engine but then you could do that by stalling if your car does ever suffer from that rare problem. Certainly not much of a concern for a well maintained tdi. And your engine management light will come on in most cases but I've just been clearing it. Will eventually have that mapped out. Car has been running much smoother since my delete and I would recommend the mod. Also should mention it makes shut down slightly as there isn't ASV choking air supply to engine on shut down. That doesn't bother me feel like it's producing more power since only clean cool air is entering the engine and very happy with it. Also won't have to clean that thing ever again.

Done this on a VW TDI but not wile running would it damage anything if used Wyn's carb cleaner wile running please can I ask

There's a risk that removed carbon can do a lot of demage to the engine if comes to a surten parts of engine, doesn't matter if it's running or not, most mechanic will tell you, if you do perform a carb cleaning safest way is using non "agresive" cleaners depending of how old is the engine and mileage coverd. Basically"younger" the engine the risk is lower. So safest way is completely removing the EGR valve and then clean it, sometimes despite a clean EGR valve there is mechanical damage specialy with a older EGR, and there is also a faulty electronic component on a newer cars that can cause a EGR malfunction.

Great video. I have a leon mk1 110bhp, and currently on startup my oil light flashes yellow about 5 times and then goes off. I've checked my oil level and that's ok. Have you ever heard of this happening? Would it have anything to do with the EGR valve being coked up perhaps?

areyoumad4it Hey thanks. If it's the oil can shaped light flashing yellow but you havent lost oil its possibly defective oil level sensor. Is the car due a service? Check if the bonnet closes/locks properly as defective bonnet switch can also trigger the light.

Hi, great video thanks for this!! Had a few tdi problems with limp mode which has been greatly improved with new boost sensor (1.4tdi vw). Had low air flow but air flow meter was changed but didn't correct. As such, suspected egr/inlet manifold carbon deposits. Decided to follow your video and did all, egr value did have build up and at point where vertical rod goes down reckon air flow was restricted. Sprayed a can or egr cleaner in and made a big difference but when I revved it hard didn't see any black smoke at all?!? Car is fine before I did this until on motorway at 65mph+, feels really down on power (compared to 1.4L petrol too which should have similar power). Haven't gone on motorway yet but in your opinion, does this mean that my low air flow may not be this? I also feel reluctant to remove inlet manifold as big job and egr value was no where near as bad as some photos your see (10 years old, 50k miles). But seems like a likely cause. Would love to hear your opinion and again, that's so much for a very informative video!!

Also, inspected air filter and will replace but didn't looks too bad, so feel this is not the source of low air flow either....

Andy713uk Hey Andy thanks for watching, looking back on this the reason I had so much black smoke is because intercooler pipe was still unplugged lol. This method of cleaning does still help as you mentioned, but I uploaded one just yesterday on how to dismantle and clean egr more thoroughly. When you take it off you should be able to inspect how bad the inlet manifold is. Your low air flow could be a leaking pipe somewhere? However, limp mode on tdi engines is often a result of sticking vanes in the variable geometry turbos. Mine kept doing this, managed to fix it with Mr muscle oven cleaner in the turbo, check out my video on that. Do you have any lights on dash or fault codes logged?

My seat altea keeps going into limp mode and the coil light comes on loses power if I turn ignition on and of it’s fine for 5/10 mins then it does the same could the egr be coursing the problem ??

What's the point of cleaning it withou removing. Removing takes like 2 minutes (remove hose, 6 screws) and you have to use some brush

This is pure balls...the revving up and black smoke is because the boost pipe is off....not saying the cleaner did nothing but no EGR at idle so results are not valid ..

My 1.2 diesel seat Ibiza is having an egr problem but i can locate the valve and I believe it's far under/behind the engine hence I can't physically clean it

Do you use synthetic oil for turbo cars? I had similar problems in the past though with synthetics even in good condition turbos I had to replace them twice as you in short period maybe less than two months. They are sensitive I think.

my audi A3 2.0 TDI has done 80,000 miles from new. i might take off the EGR and clean it. do you have to reset the engine management light if the EGR is removed.

+Redline Revs I did my EGR valve last year on my A3. I took it off the car cleaned with mr muscle and a dremel. Quite easy to get to and a BKD engine andthe engine management light didnt come on. no increase in mpg but still drives great

Interesting way of doing it - i followed the instructions on the EGR valve cleaning tin, got the engine warm, removed air filter, and sprayed it in that way.. didn't work - my engine fault light still comes on :(

G Allan Yup that's also a legit method- but you're likely to get better results if you follow the video. Sorry to hear your engine fault light still comes on. Is the light definitely triggered by the EGR? You need a fault code scanner- the code it throws up will let you know if its EGR or something else. If it is the EGR you will need to reset the code after cleaning or replacing it. I live in West London and have a scanner you can use if you bring the car to me.

Swish wow that's very low mileage. Are you selling it? Hmm If its that low mileage unlikely to be caked up egr, could be a number of things perhaps maf or engine temp sensor but also take the engine cover off and see whether any of the pcv hoses or any other pipes are split or deteriorating, while your there inspect the dipstick tube carefully to make sure its not cracked or broken anywhere.

Concern is broken bits of carbon going through combustion hitting a fin on exhaust side of turbo and chipping it which will send it out of balance and thus fuck the turbo. Seen it many of times from this type of cleaning. Best to remove and clean the good old fashioned way.

Rohan Rehman Hey, I used to have 1.8t petrol which does not have EGR valve, instead it had a throttle body which you can clean like this. Beware if you unplug it you may have to reprogram using VAGCOM.

@@benpar8120 - The Cat is nothing to do with the EGR. As he said, it is physically impossible to put something in the fuel tank and it have any effect at all on the EGR. EGR cleaning must be done through the air intake.

My friend, that was a very dirty way to clean the valve. The best way is to remove the valve outside the car, and clean it separately. So you do not put dirty particles or products inside the engine It is a good attempt to do a tutorial, but I am very sorry, that is a fudge, so someone who does not know anything about car mechanics could damage your engine or the valve itself when viewing this tutorial.
