There are some that are making negative comments .The purpose of this was to show how the proses works without having to take the EGR valve out, and was taken out as an observation.I have a vehicle that requires the engine to be taken out to change the EGR valve so for me this video proved invaluable thanks for posting

I was contemplating these products but decided to have a go at cleaning the EGR on my 100K 2.0d X-Type myself. I sort of thought that if I struggled getting it off I could tighten everything back up and use the spray anyway. With some excellent, easy to find help on some of the Jag forums I found the valve much easier to remove than I expected using just a 1/4" ratchet with long & short extensions and 8/10mm sockets. The condition of the valve convinced me that manual cleaning (half an hour with a couple of litres of paraffin, some non-metallic scourers and a pound store washing up brush) was the only way to go. There is no solvent I know (certainly none that I'm prepared to unleash indiscriminately) which could have shifted the gunge and tar. Even if it did I cannot conceive of it passing harmlessly through the engine, turbo, cat and exhaust. The opening to the inlet manifold was also similarly treated. Total time two hours. Would have been less if I'd remembered to refit the bl@@dy EGR inlet gasket. In fact the job was so easy (plenty of PVC gloves needed though) that I decided against tinkering with the EGR system. I'll just repeat the process as and when necessary. Can't be bothered with engine management warnings and the like. I may consider using a spray to maintain the condition of the valve but I doubt it. They may have their place but I really would not feel comfortable relying on something which just moves the muck further along the system. Incidentally the cleanup completely cured my rough idle. Improved bottom end torque and made the driving experience much more pleasurable. No more Hail Marys prior to entering a busy roundabout with a full load.

Does your car live on one of the islands that does not have either an MOT test station or a fixed link to one that does ? Because if it does not a lit engine warning light is a problem. But you may have found that out by now.

My own car is a 16 year old Mercedes with a mileage of 170000 miles. I had been having a similar problem with no power so decided to buy a similar kit her in the Shetland Islands in the UK. Even though I used only half a can of aerosol I have had no more problems, back on full power once again. Many thanks for uploading this video.

I tried using Wynn's EGR cleaner. The add to fuel type and forget about. Next week I took my EGR off the car took it in my kitchen to clean properly using "elbow grease" from pound world (I've used every degreaser on the planet and this is the best). Anyway the EGR was a solid lump of sticky carbon inside. No way could the valve open or close.. Soaked it in elbow grease for half hour. Boiled kettle and poured it over. Result nice and clean. Valve moves nice and freely now..I've blanked the EGR now. 20% better fuel efficiency..the brim it drive for 400 miles and brim it again test..4 times I've done that now..amazed at the results. Engines like clean cool air not dirty warm air. .

He removed the EGR to demonstrate the effectiveness of this product (if you can remove it then obviously soak it and scrub it clean). My EGR is a big job to get to it, some are very easily accessible. I used this method and cleared EGR fault. Cost me £20 and worked. Fixed for ever? No, but might see me through until I scrap my van. If you’re driving a motor with a lot of life left, do it properly, this will buy you a bit of time before it clogs up again, that’s it.

@konp8685

@@metzmatu8409 I don't use the product shown in the video because I can't find it in Australia. I use the technique shown. After watching other videos, the product I use are Oven Cleaner and Water. Same technique as in the video shown, warm the engine then squirt oven cleaner at a rate of a second a squirt until spray can is empty. Turn off engine for an hour to let oven cleaner do it's job. Turn engine on until to operating temperature, squirt water in slowly about 500mL was enough for my car. The water mist works as water get in there it will generate steam and the steam action clean out the carbon build up. I did that procedure twice although it was 2 months apart. Now, after 5 months, my VW Golf 2005 is revving nicely and no longer in "limp" mode.

So the EGR is clogged with carbon and these spray cleaners are meant to wash the carbon deposits away which will end up in the Cat and likely damaging it. I need to clean out the EGR on a VW CFWA engine but will be removing it to clean it out. Restricted gas flow because the EGR is clogged has lit the Engine Management on the dash.

But does it clean the EGR cooler and DPF and catalytic converter and exhaust system as well at the same time. Because if it doesn't no point on just doing 1 thing. Constantino BellaRomano an even worse idea at any rate. A/F ratios depend on the post cat data in junction with either a mass air flow or MAP sensor data. It will not make accurate adjustments if you remove the cat.

Well, it kinda work, if you can access the EGR valve for removal, then better remove it and clean it or simply replace it. On some cars the access to the EGR valve is quite complicate, so i can see myself using it.

would that get into the EGR ports as well? I don't understand how this would get to the EGR valve.. I thought the intake just goes into the fuel mixture directly before its burned, and the exaust gas enters this system through an entirely separate system.

Certainly. I have a 08 plate vectra with 200000 miles, which was wound up on motorways in England, I imported it in 2012, when it had 137000 and I brought that up to 200,000 with no problems, but also no EGR attention, I noticed i was getting a lot of black smoke under hard acceleration, harder on fuel, just generally not the same car i bought in 2012. I took a trip to halfords and purchased wynns formula gold engine treatment, ( www.halfords.ie/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/fuel-oil-additives/wynns-formula-gold-engine-treatment-500ml) (website is .ie for ireland but it should be the same on .co.uk if that is where you are from) along with this I purchased wynns diesel egr treatment (www.halfords.ie/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/fuel-oil-additives/wynns-diesel-egr-valve-cleaner-150ml) which is quite possibly the best motoring purchase i have ever made, If you do not have any mechanical knowledge, bring it to someone who does and they will do it for you, but if you do, take the air pipe off AFTER the air mass meter, by after i mean the engine side of the air mass meter, because you do not want to damage that with the spray, and if i remember correctly the instructions are extremely comprehensive and they walk you through the process, now im sure the egr cleaning spray would be fine on its own, but just for extra cleaning of fuel pump, high pressure injection pump, injectors and egr valve I would highly recommend the fuel additive, although on the pricey side I am conviced it is good stuff. Now obviously you should contact your mechanic to ensure this process is ok to do on your car, as we have different cars, but i cannot see why not, but just to be on the safe side. I hope this has helped you, and i also hope you do not have to shell out for a new egr on a 2010, which is very unusual. Also on one last point, i add the formula gold to my car every 15th tank, just to keep the engine spick and span, which is also entirely up to you, i just feel that it maintains my engine for many more miles of trouble free motoring. (Kind of feeling like a bit of a wynns salesman which is not the case) Hope this has saved you some money and agro. Also, take your car for a good long hard drive afterwards to burn off any soot particles that have made their way into your DPF (diesel particulate filter). Hope I have helped you. Enda.

@Dan Lim. My sentiment initially, then I saw the valve cleaning without "Disassembly". For those with some automotive skills, disassembly would be the best way to clean the EGR. But, for the rest of us, the cleaner test kit is the answer. (my 2 cents)

Why didn't you just clean the EGR valve by hand, if it is so easy to remove? On my Volvo V50, the EGR was much more difficult to remove, but i'm glad I did. I got almost 0.75kg of carbon deposits out of it, and now, I just use fuel additives every other tank full to keep it clean.

Surely all the carbon that's been cleaned off the valve has now been deposited in the exhaust system and caused partial blockage? I have a VW TDI CR engine EGR valve to sort out but I'd rather remove it and manaully clean it out. The downside is its a 2011 Polo TDI and going to be damn fiddly job.

Dont know why everyone is butthurt.... hes making a baseline on before and after! and to the dippy that said to clean the EGR with petrol Tut tut clearly never seen what happens to early det lol. these methods are the best. our TDDI 1.8 van 62,000 miles just had a full service due to no service for 20,000 miles! limp mode & leak off tc put in similar stuff right after the service "Nearly empty tank", drove around til 50miles marker than refuled as soon as we refuel and allowed all the soak"engine off time" we gave it a little for 20min and now all faults are gone plus its running sweet again.

Certified 44 yrs here. No engine (as far as a passenger vehicle) should ever be reved past 1800 rpm. Even the 2500 rpm used for state inspections is too high. I would spend 100 dollars on parts for my vehicles before I would rev them that high. The german concept of engineering is to use gearing to make even a 4cyl engine never run at highway speed above 1500 rpm. Here in the US this concept was used from the late 60s through the 70s on American full sized vehicles and overdrive was used in the 80s because the engineering concept is to never go above 1500 rpm. The common motorist is not a race car driver

Earl Guyton Then why do car manufacturers make production engines with redlines as high as 7k-8k RPMS? And then you have sport bike engines that do 2x that.
@rmblwgn
@rmblwgn 9 жыл бұрын
Earl Guyton what in the hell are you talking about even automatic transmissions shift after 1800rpm. what are you going to do mod your ECU so that your transmission doesn't ever go past 1800 rpm? That makes no sense at all. It would be terribly boring to drive if everybody shifted so quickly and there would be almost no useable power unless you had a high torque motor which most dont. It would take forever to get up to speed. I have no idea why you would say this. Do you seriously shift before 2000 rpm every single time?
@danharrison5195
@danharrison5195 9 жыл бұрын
Earl Guyton So why does the turbo on my diesel not even kick in until around 1800RPM, you're talking out of your ass. It's not economical to be persistantly driving high up the rev range, but there is no issues driving at 2-3k rpm regularly. Redlining might fuck your engine up after a while but theres no damage caused by revving to 7k before changing up
@detmer87
@detmer87 9 жыл бұрын
+Earl Guyton On a healthy and properly maintained modern engine high reving of a warm engine won't cause any wear. Most wear in engines are from cold miles, cold oil lubricates much, much worse. So drive gently until the engine is warm. I have seen a lot of Ferrari's on the dyno (old (cheaper) Ferrari's that get prepared to become a enthousiast track car) and the best ones are the ones that always were driven fast...
@jmmluis
@jmmluis 9 жыл бұрын
Stop talking BS. Running engines that low in the rev range is a great way of building up carbon and have your trim come apart due to engine vibration. there is no way you can drive at highway speeds in that range. most diesels have their optimum operating point between 2.5 and 3k rpm
