+Sunny W I just wanted to say, heartfully, thanks. I have seen a few pretty negative comments now and again, and I'll be honest and say it concerned me that I was not a good thing for Wrangerstars channel. However, it means a great deal that folks like you actually do enjoy the info and the effort he and I put into these. The feedback is valuable, and your input is greatly appreciated. Cheers, and thank you sir. ~alan

This was a really entertaining little mini series, you REALLY get to have an understanding of someone, their mindset, their skills, experience and their level of preparedness when you see what they pack (for anything really) but particularly for "battle". Mostly we didn't actually have weight restrictions but for field exercises we trained as if their were and that sucked. What you pack to live in a tent in the Virginia winter is not even close to the same as what you pack for the middle-east. There are quite a few parallels that I found amusing, the importance of shower shoes being one of them. At the risk of being bombarded hands down the best shower shoe out there.... the dreaded crocs. They weigh nothing, cover your toes so you keep out dirt, dust, sand and gravel infinitely better than flip flops, terrain with elevation can be crossed due to the heel strap... I've never owned a pair stateside but every deployment one of the first things you get when you can, damnable crocs.

HA! You cracked me up with the Gold Bond. Army Basic Training, 1964; Johnson's Baby Powder was an absolute necessity. When my son was going off to Basic in 199?, I talked to him about lessons learned, giving him a step up on his barracks companions.

A lot of this stuff is also similar to deploying or going to the field for military guys. I’m getting on in years (I’m an old geezer in Army Years) and have learned that certain things are super important. When you only get three to four hours of downtime you HAVE to make it your ME time. I have a Klymit Static-V Recon ($44.96 on Amazon) and their Luxe Pillow ($39.95) and they are complete and total game changers. Saved me during a hellacious JRTC rotation in the swamps of LA. I’m a ‘princess and the pea’ sleeper and it is hands down, no exaggeration, the best money I have ever spent on anything related to gear. Bar none. The pad compress down to the size of a Nalgene bottle and the pillow can be fit into a sandwich bag. Also I’ve found the “Mack’s Brand” of ear plugs to be the best and most comfortable to wear while sleeping.

I don't have an argument for the space aspect of a mummy bag, however, I use one when I backpack and love it! I have one with a zipper at the feet which allows me to stick them out (which is critical for me as well). I also don't use the hood over my head, however, I stuff my pillow in it and it does a great job of keeping it from slipping around. Just something to consider and maybe try a mummy bag!

Cody, a quick tip for the solar panel. I've found over awhile of packing it around, the panels get grit on them and it scratches the panels really bad. I just keep a shop towel folded in between the panels and it keeps them from scratching.

a lot of good advise guys, thanks. i own the same mountain hardware pants, lovem. one thing i was supersized neither of you guys talked about is a micro fleece sleeping bag liner! it adds so much to your kit for little to no wight or size. pros would be keeps your bag clean (this in itself is worth it), adds warmth when ya need it ( i mostly sleep with bag unziped as a blanket now with same big agnes pad), on warmer nights you just sleep in the liner on top of your bag. any way thanks for the tips. hope you try a bag liner and see how awesome they are.

Also keep a tube of eye ointment in your bath kit. If you get something in your eye and it won't come out after the shower, put a little of this salve on your lower eyelid and sleep. When you wake up, all foreign particles and any irritation is gone. I think I got my last tube at Walmart.

For the mosquito issue if you do not want to use spray on bug repellant i have found that a thermacell is good. They are right around $25-30 but they are worth it in my opinion. They dont have nearly as bad of an odor and they are fairly light. That may be an option worth looking into

+1 for the Dr. Bronners, but after 10-15 years of using it in the field you must, must, must use a different bottle. The cap is brittle and once it breaks the soap will find its way into everything. At a minimum, tape the cap down.

Re: Ash and soap. You know that people used to make lye soap with potash, which I understand was obtained by pouring water through hardwood ash. This was then boiled with fat to form soap. I'm thinking that the ash on your skin may react with the sweat and skin oil to make just a little lye soap-- which is caustic.

I was surprised to see Dr. Bronners Castile soap and find out you did not not already use it. A little bit goes a LONG way. When it is not been diluted, you can use a few drops and clean you hair and face, possibly your body too. That bottle will last MANY showers. The Pepermint one as shown is great as it has a cooling effect when used. My next favorite one is the Tea tree oil one for the extra cleaning properties it contains.Good trade and try it at home before you use it in the field.PS. They have a few scents/oils that Mrs W might really like...Citrus,rose,lavender,etc.

with tent sizes consider -occupancy size necessary -real estate required (in numbers other than just you. Usually limited space) -low ceiling keeps your body heat closer -paper body towels aren't always supplied. small microfiber dries fast -for night shift, no synthetic material thermals allowed, but consider military FROG wear. Flame Resistant Organizational Gear is affordable but not easy to find -NO Feet for me, bug net is great over your head -I'm saving up for a GOAL ZERO solar + battery storage kit to trial (nomad or sherpa) -wall chargers are great. I never allow phone charging in vehicles overnight for obvious reasons.

We call the monkey butt either "infantry fire" or "muzzle flash" here in Sweden. The muzzle flash is self explanatory and the infantry fire is basically because of all the walking infantry does. Both terms derive from us coming from a conscript based armed force and therefor almost every man used to be in the armed forces at some point. But muzzle flash ought to be the best description of it in my book.

You guys should forget the tents, and get some hammocks with built in mosquito net and a rain fly. All you need is two anchor points to hang it. You could do away with the sleeping pad, tent, etc., and cut your gear weight down. It also serves a dual purpose as a chair. You'll also get a better nights sleep being cradled rather than lying on the cold ground.
