They are written in different characters. It is like in English, you pronounce one and won the same but they mean differntly. Kami/神 as a God, Kami/紙 as a paper and Kami/髪 as hair.

sigh. i deleted a response. gohan means both rice and meal (in general). when you combine gohan with a time of the day (asa - morning, ban - evening) you get a meal eaten at that specific time (asagohan - breakfast, bangohan - dinner/supper).

That is correct when somebody asks you what you are doing now. But if you WANT to or ARE GOING TO or NEED to, then it will be different. For example, you'd say "Ha wo migakitai" means "I want to brush my teeth." if you want to say you BRUSHED your teeth, you'd say "Ha wo migaita."
@JapanSocietyNYC12 жыл бұрын
Yes, correct.

hey there Erin-chan ! I was kinda wondering why you pronounce the particle を as "wo". I understand the common pronunciation is "o". As a matter of fact , you're the one 日本人 whom I have listened to using that pronunciation 😂

Great video! Lots of vocab! Your videos are coming on nicely and I think it's great how you are breaking down all the words and phrases like that! :) One question though, what does the 'wo' mean in the sentences such as 'kao wo arau' and 'youi wo suru' and many of the other ones used in the video? Would you be able to do a video about it or comment please? Arigatou gozaimasu! :D

@helloitsme7919 "wo" is a particle than conect the subject with verbs in this case imply that you make something or do something (the verb) over the subject. When you use the verb: eat, drink, build, remember, do, make, etc. Always put the "wo " before the verb.

@AiDee it's really hard to exlpain in a few words and it's going to sound confusing (there's serveral cases for the pas tin japanese, depending on the end suffix of each verb) for example the verb "to eat" taberu, present indicative. ru. in the past indicative becomes ta->tabeta

I've been studying japanese for a while now and hopefully I can help you :) if you want to say "I brushed my teeth" you are talking about a completed action in the past, so you need to conjugate the verb :) in this case it would be "ha wo migaita".

lots of info in this video.. love it. I've always had a bit of an issue with understanding when to use the particle "wo" . Is it safe to say that "wo" is used when describing the subjects action? like in all these phrases when performing an action like brushing, stopping the clock or washing your face ? thanks again
@JapanSocietyNYC10 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is correct. Using the examples you have given, you would say tokei wo tomeru (to stop the clock) and kao wo araru (to wash your face). Please feel free to ask more questions!
