Walking England‘s Coast to Coast with my Dog (pt. 1): From the Irish Sea to the Lake District

Hi Elli. I walked and also filmed all of the Coast to Coast just before you in early August. I’m loving watching the first part of your adventure as it’s bringing back so many good memories for me. When I did all of the Lakes section though, the majority of it was flooded and in pouring rain! It’s so so nice to recognise many parts again but to also see what it would have looked like for me in sunshine. Your filming and editing is really good. Loving the fact you have Otto with you too. Did you know that Wainwright's ashes are scattered near the top of Haystacks? Funnily enough, some of my dad's ashes are scattered on Red Pike overlooking Buttermere, where we went for several holidays when I was a little boy in the 1960s. You had wonderful weather for the walk. Lucky you!

My happy Place has to be sat outside of Black Sail YHA with a cup of Coffee first thing in the Morning. Its now over 35 years since I last visited the area on my Seccond Crossing on the C2C, but its still clear in my mind, the Peace and Tranquility is astounding. My first day was a little bit longer than yours as I finished at Black Sail YHA, but as it was mid summer I started hiking ar 4am and arrived at BS YHA at 4pm. I took my time and enjoyed the Lake District scenery as it was my first visit to the Lake District. I loved it then and still do 35 years later.

The first thing that has changed since I last visited was the steps leading out of Ennerdale and onward to Honister Pass then a few more miles to my campsite at Stonetwaite. OK it was a short day for me but I still need to take it easy and not try to keep up with the Younger Hikers.

In GB it's best to enjoy the sunshine when you get it, because it won't last long! Otto looks like he's having a lovely time.

I worked for the best part of two years as the Manager of the Haweswater Hotel, I met many people over that time doing the Coast to Coast walk, the path actually goes down the other side of the reservoir from the hotel, it's a big challenge so kudos for taking it on.

So glad you got better weather in the Lakes this time round. It really is a special place with so much beauty crammed into such a small area. Its also amazing how it can seem remote and quiet even when it is crammed full of people in summer.

Hahaha, yes - our first days were lovely!!! It i's very special for sure. It's stunning and I really want to go back and see more of it. And it really didn't feel crowded at all. After about 20mins of hiking out of the little towns and villages, it was very quite which felt so nice 🥰

Glad you have seen the Lakes in better light than on your Cumbria Way walk. I did the Coast to Coast walk 44 years ago when there were no Honesty Cafes. We also decided to walk from East to West so the scenery got better from start to finish, I like the Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, but neither are in the same class as the Lakes. It is my favourite place on Earth.

The dog is living the best life. This video evoked qhite a few memories for me. St bees, askam in furness, lakes districts hikes. Also carrying the pebble- infound an unusual round stone on a beach in Shetland. Not realising it, must have put it in my pocket and it came to Australia. My son polished it and inposted it to a friend in Askam. Anyway, he passed away and the family sent me the stone. A well travelled rock.

Wow what a contrast to that day in Great Langdale ! I'm glad you got to see some Lakeland scenery in perfect conditions like that. I've chatted with many people doing the coast to coast around Ennerdale, such a magnificent valley which has been undergoing a re-wilding project for many years now, and many still to come. Lots of coniferous forest has been felled & mixed woodland planted. There are a herd of Galloway cattle roaming the woodlands churning up the ground & encouraging new seed growth. Looking forward to the rest of this series. Love to you & Otto x

Excellent, very nice photography, it bought back so many great memories for me. I too camped at the pub, but when I did it everyone camped down by the little stream a short distance from the bar. I walked the route a second time, about two years later, this time camping where you camped, the area next to the stream was by then covered in stinging nettles and no longer used.

Maybe try using a small white T shirt for Otto when its sunny. He could wear it by just putting his front legs through the arm holes, then put his harness on over the top to keep it in place. White will reflect the suns heat.

Another great film. I enjoyed watching you and Otto on this section. The now defunct St Begas ultra race followed mostly the same route, in the other direction. So I know how tough that climb to Honister pass would have been, especially for Otto and his little legs. Bravo!

Wow, never realised the Coast to Coast walk was 192 miles! 😮 So it’s more than twice the length of the Hadrian’s Wall walk - which is also a coast to coast! (But just 84 miles!)

This walk goes through national parks. Are dogs allowed there? I would like to go on a long hike with my dog next spring and I thought of going to the UK because it's a lot more dog friendly than Ireland which is where I live. I started looking for videos of people who have done long distance hikes with dogs there and I found your channel!. Now I was thinking of doing the Offa's Dyke walk but you're making me consider other walks. This walk seems amazing but I wonder about the national parks. Thank you so much for the videos. They are very encouraging. I have a small but extremely active patterdale and he'd love to do stuff this.

I’ve never heard of dogs not being allowed in national parks, in fact there’re millions of them.

@@PhilMcKelliget in Ireland they are and in Spain too. I know the UK is a lot more dog friendly so I was wondering. If you like hiking thru with your dog, you need to plan where you are going. In Ireland dogs are not allowed on most trails, whether they go through national parks or not because the trails go through private properties and the owners don't allow dogs on their land. I think I'll be going on holidays very often to the UK in the future to walk with my dog. I would have loved to do the ring of Kerry and other trails in Ireland but they give you a lot of problems if you have a dog. Dogs here aren't allowed on public transport or anything. It's very frustrating

Dogs are welcome in the National park, obviously under control round livestock . Also welcome in most pubs etc . We are dog friendly !

@@michaellupton1593 that's just amazing. I live in the countryside in Ireland and I have made sure my dog is used to farm animals. I don't ever want to cause trouble since that would make it more difficult to keep walking with the dog in the future. I can't wait for next spring. I think I'd love to do the coast to coast walk first. But I'll be coming back many more times to hike with my dog to the UK. It's really amazing 🤩

Blimey, it sounds like Ireland is the opposite to Britain in this respect. That's an eye-opener for me. Britain has 13.5 million dogs (36% households). It's a dog friendly nation. Public rights of way are enshrined in our culture and in law. They are exactly what they say they are. Rights of way, irrespective of who owns the land. Footpaths (for humans & dogs) are 1.5m wide, bridleways (humans & dogs, horses, wheeled vehicles) 3m. Any attempt by landowners to prevent their usage is illegal. The law says that dogs must be under control. Farmers have the right to shoot dogs frightening livestock. So keep on a lead around animals. Be aware of the potential danger from cows - go off path if necessary, don't pass between mothers and calves (for any animal, for that matter). I'd be more concerned about a Patterdale getting into trouble down a hole or chasing other wildlife. Badgers are protected. A tracker would be a must - make sure it uses any mobile phone network on 2, 3, 4 & 5G as there are not enough people in rural areas for trackers using Bluetooth and Internet of Things to relay the signal. Be aware that some landscape types have small, hidden, crevices caused by millennia of erosion.
