Lazy guy question: after the first layer of spackle it seems to look pretty good. Why are additional layers of spackle needed? What improvement does a 2nd or 3rd layer make? Great video, Thanks!
@RefreshHomeImprovements
@RefreshHomeImprovements 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! The first layer of mud/spackle locks the patch in place and essentially fixes the hole. The additional layers ‘fan’ the mud out to help eliminate the appearance of a hump/bump in the wall (due to the patch sitting on top of the wall surface) 👍

Sorry, a girl who just bought a house and trying to learn here. lol. What did you do with the wires? I'm assuming you have to kill the breaker for the room and then what, tug the wires out? Cut them? Or did you just stuff them into the wall? Everything else seems pretty easy, thanks.
@RefreshHomeImprovements
@RefreshHomeImprovements 2 жыл бұрын
Because it was a telephone line, it’s not dangerous to cut them at the box. Still, the best thing to do is to find the network interface (usually on the side of your house or in the basement) and disconnect the wires out there, that way, none of the wires in the house have any voltage on it. If you can't do that cut the wires so they are at slightly different lengths and wrap the bundle together in electrical tape. DO NOT DO THIS if you are unsure of the type of wire you’re dealing with. If it’s an electrical outlet or a junction box (or you’re unsure) get an electrician in to disconnect the wires from the panel properly 👍

i cut a piece of drywall out of the wall to put a cable passthrough, I ended up moving the passthrough because of a surprise crossbeam. Can I stick the piece of drywall i cut out to the back of the patch?
@RefreshHomeImprovements
@RefreshHomeImprovements 4 күн бұрын
We suppose you could 👍. You’d essentially be creating what’s known as a ‘california/butterfly/hot patch’. The concern would be that without securing the piece of drywall to anything (beyond the compound you used to stick it to the patch), it really wont provide much additional strength to the patch. If youre curious, we have a whole playlist on our page dedicated to different methods for patching drywall holes. I’ll link it below 👇 kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6PNmoiYoZl7jdE

both sides get covered with spackling compound (which makes it surprisingly strong), so it doesn’t really matter which side goes to the wall. If you follow the instructions on the pack it’s very straight forward 👍

Good question! This was an old phone jack (low voltage line), and had been disconnected at the panel, so we knew it was safe to delete. If you are unsure of what the plug is, always consult a professional (electrician, or service provider). Never cut a wire without knowing exactly what it is/ if its live 👍

Sorry - I do not get it - how do you match the texture of the wall?
@RefreshHomeImprovements
@RefreshHomeImprovements 3 ай бұрын
In this example the wall isn’t textured. In this case, it’s simply a matter of making the smooth patched area blend in with a wall thats been rolled many times already. Our best advice in this instance is the paint the patch with a thicker nap than the wall has (might need to do this a few times), then paint the whole thing with a finer nap roller to blend it in with the rest of the wall. If the wall is textured, once the patch is completed, you would apply the textured finish to the smooth patched area and try your best to blend it in with the surrounding wall (not an easy task). 👍

@RefreshHomeImprovements

It really shouldn’t be a ‘hump’ when you’re done. You apply enough compound to cover the patch AND to fan it out wide enough so that when you sand it back (to the depth of the patch itself) the raised section is so gradual and minimal you’ll never see it 👍

@RefreshHomeImprovements
@RefreshHomeImprovements Жыл бұрын
There is no metal piece in this kit (if i understand correctly), but the concept should be the same. You need to keep applying layers of compound/spackling to ‘fan out’ the raised area (essentially spreading it out over a large enough area that the ‘bump’ in imperceptible). If you do this enough/properly, then all youre doing with the sander is blending in the edges and making sure the top layer of the patch is smooth. You shouldn’t need to do a ton of sanding if done correctly 👍
