"I am the King of France, not a merchant". In saying this, Louis XV gave back the Austrian Netherlands when he could have easily annexed it. Two reasons are responsible for this : - Louis XV did everything to be be seen as the opposite of his predecessor, Louis XIV. Louis XIV was a warrying king, he told it himself, he has loved war too much, and never hesistated to declare war on anyone at the drop of a hat to enlarge his kingdom (he conquered 10 new provinces for France). In his last will to his young great grandson, Louis XIV advised Louis XV to be a prince of peace and to take care of his people. I think it greaty influenced Louis XV in his process to be king. He built himself around that advice. Then of course he used war as it was the custom of the time, but his gains (Lorraine, Corsica) came mostly from diplomatic work. He was the man of influence of the continent, the arbiter, he didn't fail in Europe, but he surely did in the colonies in the 7 years war where he could have cared more. - He also gave back the territories to vainquished Austria to build an alliance with them, and it was not a bad idea. In annexing these lands, he would have never been able to consider any alliance with them. In showing his good will, Austria was more keen to befriend with France, when both countries were at war against each others for centuries before that. This new alliance proved less effective in the 7 years war due to massive cockups in the high command of the respective armies, but it proved to be a great asset in the American revolutionary war for Louis XVI, where Britain tried to build a european coalition against France but did not find anybody to answer to it. Austria, who was a former British ally and always keen to participate to these coalitions, stuck to its word and sided with France. Therefore France was free in Europe, and could focus to fight Britain in the Med, North America, west Indies, India... defeating them

Say what now? Louis the 14 fought for decades and got some small gains plus Spain, which didn't have much sense - the country wasn't rich and silver from the colonies was running out. You have to wage Napoleon-style war but more effectively. Leopold the retarded refused to give away even Milan because it was dangerous to Vienna, supposedly. Even Prussia managed to snatch Silesia, with the french manpower they should've taken Lorraine and Belgium as the first step only

That's probably because in EUIV, you can conquer the entirety of Europe by 1700, which no country ever did in 1700, so taking Silesia is a piece of cake, and can be achieved well before 1500.

How to get Silesia: 1: Ally Poland 2: Wait for Poland to take his Union with Lituania 3: Ally Austria 4: Declare war at the Teutonic Order for Neumark. 5: Take Neumark and give some land to Poland (#10 Favors) 6: Declare war at Silesia/Bohemia With poland as you Ally (You know that 10 Favors :D) 7: Send you forces as fast as Possible to the Silesian provences and Siege them. 8: Take them in the Peace Deal (PS: AE is an Bitch here XD)

Honestly all the European wars between 1701 and 1763 are basically the same war with a few occasional ceasefires. It's just France, Prussia and Spain fighting Britain, Austria, Russia and the HRE.

At this time, France maintains its large and rich territory (which is its main objective, more than the colonial conquests, unlike England), and is in statu quo with Austria. England became a diplomatic leader with its overseas gains. And Prussia a rising power. This heralds the 7 year's war.

The Wettins of Saxony and Hohenzollerns of Brandenburg-Prussia also had a long-standing rivalry, as both competed to be the "leader of Protestants in Germany". It was pretty remarkable that Frederick II ever got Saxony on his side in the first place, though by my understanding it was mainly French diplomacy that accomplished this and not Prussian

Despite its "huge empire", Britain was unable to defeat France or Germany on its own, and had to rely on its continental allies. Roman and Mongols conquered equal and even sometimes superior powers. Britain conquered areas with primitive tribes (against other civilised nations they couldn't do shit except hide on their island and rely on their continental allies to carry most of the war effort).
