While being remembered for his disabilities(which he was not to blame for), most overlook his contributions especially as a patron of the academic world. It was due to his initiatives that formal higher education was introduced and started to spread in South America. He granted Cedulas and directly supported the foundation of several universities(many of them still in function). One example is the National University of San Marcos in Peru which also happens to be the oldest continuously functioning higher education institution in the Americas.

You hinted at but did not explicitly mention the central, dominant fact of the war and resulting peace: as Louis XIV's grandson, Philip inheriting the throne of Spain would likely also leave him in line to inherit the throne of France, thereby potentially uniting the two crowns. The war was fought entirely over this question. At the end of the war, Philip was able to inherit the Spanish throne, but only on the condition of surrendering his inheritance rights to the French throne. It was not about weakening France itself, but about preventing the formation of a Franco-Spanish superstate. Control of Belgium (the Spanish Netherlands) was also a hugely important issue, as control over Belgian ports would greatly strengthen France's position in the English channel, and put French armies directly on the Dutch border. Fear of a reunified Spanish-Holy Roman Empire was not much of a concern, as the disjoint territories were ungovernable, and both powers were very much in decline by this point.

Finally someone get the whole point of the war. France was already dominant in Europe, but with Spain it would have probably become what you could call a superpower of the time. That's what the allies couldn't allow. The video fails to emphasize that.
@DarthPlato5 жыл бұрын
The idea that France and Spain were seeking personal union is spun from a false narrative designed by English contemporaries to justify on the home front sending an expeditionary army to the continent. Historians miss this point often, perhaps because it makes for a good story. London's motivation for involvement was the partition of the Spanish Empire; London had already recognized Philippe Anjou as King of Spain on the condition that he foreswear any potential claim to France. This was done after 1701 and reaffirmed in 1711 after Louis Dauphin and two sons died. Also, France was a guarantor of the Peace of Westphalia; if France sought union with Spain, this would have shattered France's prestige and honor as a guarantor of the balance of power.

Austria wouldn't be in a serious decline until the 19th century. Austria gained large territories in the War of the Spanish Succession and would gain more territories from the ottomans and Poland throughout the 18th century. Austria remained a major European power throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. In fact, if anything, this period was the height of Austrian Power (Not counting Charles V).

Still often notified as a French defeat, the battle of Malplaquet is nevertheless - according to modern criteria - a huge strategic victory for them: the allied losses are twice as important. The French army has retreated in order and is still in a state of combat. The French lost 33 flags and flags, but captured 34. Finally, the Coalition disunited after the battle. A rumor runs just after the battle of Malplaquet: Marlborough would have been killed there. On an ancestral melody, the French put words that will give the famous song "Malbrough s'en va en guerre". In fact, Marlborough was the only one of the 4 generals not to have been injured during the battle. He was very active but remained cautiously far from the front.

The war continued for years after Malplaquet with Marlborough relentlessly pushing his way through Frances fortress belt and Villars completely prostrate before his advance and yet you claim Malplaquet broke the coalition apart, it did no such thing. Rather it was the combination of defeats in Spain and the death of the Holy Roman Emperor. At best, one could claim that Malplaquet bought the French some time and restored some of the French armies confidence but the battle and its immediate aftermath were tactical and operational defeats for the French. The entire point of Villars giving battle at Malplaquet was to to prevent the allied army from capturing the stronghold of Mons. Marlborough not only broke through Villars defensive position and drove him from the field, he followed it up by capturing Mons and thousands of prisoners.

The coalition had twice the casualties of the French despite outnumbering them and therefore couldn't invade France which was pretty much the point of the battle. The French despite the loss actually prevented that en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Malplaquet "The Allies lost 20,000 men, twice as many as the French, which was regarded by contemporaries as a shocking number of casualties. The winner of this whole mess was the House of Bourbon and in the long term, Spain itself. Preventing a union of the French and Spanish crowns didn't really mean much because French bureaucrats pretty much took over the entire Spanish state machinery, and this was a GOOD thing for Spain: French tax collectors doubled state income and built a strong centralized administration, which Spain hadn't seen since the Romans. The Bourbon family effectively took control of both countries and their empires, and Naples and Sicily were regained, although not the Netherlands. Today Spanish historians recognize the benefits of the Bourbon reforms, except Catalan separatists.

Although French ministers made important reforms, (because Spain was exhausted after 200 years of war), in 1718 Spain was fighting France (and England, Austria and the Netherlands), to regain Italy. We finally regained Italy, in 1734, defeating the Austrian Empire, with our Spanish general, the Count of Montemar. The paths of France and Spain are different. Spain fights with its own fleet to stop the British in the War of the Asiento of 1726. Spanish victory against the British in the War of Jenkins' Ear 1739-48, capturing 400 British ships. For 100 Spanish ships captured. Battle of Cartagena de Indias 1741, in Colombia. 50 British ships sunk. Blas de Lezo. Thanks to that victory there are 335 million people speaking Spanish in the Caribbean area and North America. We collaborated again with the French in the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). France lost India and Quebec, and gave us Louisiana, 2200000 km2. Because we had a stronger empire than the French, and we are the only ones who can defend French Louisiana. There were French revolts in New Orleans, suppressed by Spain. We also defeated the British and Portuguese in Uruguay. Finally Spain exchanged Florida to recover the ports of Manila and Havana. From French Louisiana we launched the attack against the British in the war of independence of the 13 colonies, recovering Florida. We also defeated the British in the Bahamas, Central America, Uruguay and Menorca. Only Gibraltar resisted, due to the rock. Spanish blockade of the United Kingdom in 1779-82, capturing 2 British fleets of 24 and 55 ships (including 39 war frigates). Collapse of the London stock exchange. The truth is that the Austrian succession was not the only thing that prevented the war from ending in their total favor, the fact of the English fed up with an endless war (despite being the most benefited from it) weighed down the effort; added to the fact that the allies never managed to decisively defeat Felipe V in the Iberian Peninsula, winning this in battles such as those of Birihuega and Villaviciosa (1710), while the French managed to hold out until the British exit, which ended in their victory in Denain (1712), shows that the conflict was not an English military walk as seen in this summary. Another thing that I always see that Anglo-Saxon historiography omits is that this was not the end of Spanish rule in Europe as such, since in the following conflicts Felipe V recovered much of the prestige lost by the Habsburgs in the previous century (being important in Wars such as the Polish Succession), so after the death of the king, Spain had recovered much of the lost territory in southern Italy and then recovered Menorca in the War of Independence from the United States, so the only total losses were the territories of the Milanese, Belgium and Gibraltar.

Brazilian here.We conquered the inland regions with brave men called Bandeirantes,who went inland to the regions of Minas Gerais and Goiás in search of gold.Also,the Portuguese never fought the Incas,since the spaniards and smallpox had already devastated them before Brazil was something more than a Feitoria for extraction of Brazilwood. BTW,Until recently,Brazil still had a sparse population inland,and one of the reasons Brasilia was built was to bring people there.The region,called Centro-Oeste,was also not great for agriculture either,unlike the Southern regions and São Paulo with it's terra roxa(from rossa,red in italian),great for coffee,and the terra de massapê in the northeast regions,great for sugar cane,both of the most important crops in Brazilian history.However,with modern agriculture,the land us now used to plant soy,and we are one if not the largest producers of soy in the world. BTW,the natives Portuguese fought were broken into countless tribes.Neither the Tupis nor the Guaranis,one of the largest peoples here,had a grat empire like the Incas or the Aztecs,and never were able to unifiy into confederations like the Iroquois.However,one thing peculiar to Brazil is how much is miscigenation here,since the portuguese didn't bother to bring women and hav their children with the natives and the african slaves,brought mainly from the Bantu people. Most of the fights we hav were against other european nations,mainly the Dutch,then the English(because of Iberian Union),then the French.

Why would Charles II choose Philip de Anjou as his successor though, considering that France and Spain had been rivals for centuries
@HingerlAlois3 жыл бұрын
Basically there were three factions that hoped to inherit the Spanish Empire, the French, the Austrians and also Joseph Ferdinand the son of the Bavarian Elector Maximilian II. Emanuel and his Austrian wife Maria Antonia whose mother was the daughter of the Spanish king Philip IV. Charles II. wanted that the Bavarian crown prince would inherit the Spanish Empire (which probably would’ve avoided the war of the Spanish succession), but the Bavarian prince died in 1699 at the age of six, thus only the French and Austrian factions remained. The French prince was only his second choice after the Bavarian prince had died.

it's a new era: Despite the victory in Germany, installing a Bourbon on the Spanish throne, the French aristocracy is beginning to decline, more evident with the war of Austria succession, ruinous for its economy (hence the Revolution).

It is funny to see how your anglo saxon education gave you a biais against the french. Malpaquet, Denain, Barcelona ? Three big french victory but no let's talk only about blenheim You fail to realize that's this war is a clear French victory, having achieve the objective of putting Philip on the throne, when the Grand alliance failled to prevent that. Ensuring lasting peace between france and spain. French stay the principal power in Europe, until 1870 You can argue that Britain was global, but as Bismark said : "If the British Army landed in Europe, I'd get the Belgian police to arrest them." That's how scary they were on land ;)

You have not read the peace treaty I think?
@Henry-Paget Жыл бұрын
Since when is Malplaquet a french victory? Villars was driven from the field, lost Mons soon after and the allied advance resumed in 1710, at best the battle bought them some time and restored the confidence of the common soldiers after years of being totally routed. The small amount of territory France received in Europe came at cost of horrific defeats, massive casualties, empty treasury, ceding colonial possessions and the empowerment of the British and Austrians.

John Churchill was the greatest general of that period and ancestor of Winston Churchill. How about a video of the Battle of Brest, which shows how John Churchill, then the second in command of British forces, wrote a letter to the French King, informing him that the British were about to attack. When they came, the French were waiting, and the Brits were destroyed, the commander was killed, and Churchill became the new commander. That was John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and ancestor to Winston.

If you really think about it, the Austrian Empire got stronger while at the same time this could really be a trigger for it's deaths. With the events of 1867, the movement for Hungarian nationalism in the empire was really part of the growing nationalism for other groups in Austria. Also it makes you wonder how much of slightly weaker Austrian Empire could of effected the Napoleonic Wars.

The funniest thing about this video is that he can talk about the SPANISH succession war, but incredibly he forgets to talk about SPAIN. In Spain the war of succession caused a civil war, between the kingdom of Aragon and that of Castile. The old kingdom of Aragon fought on the Austrian side and Castile on the Bourbon side. In fact, today's Catalan conflict comes from that war. In fact, this war resulted in the loss of part of the possessions of the kingdom of Aragon such as Milan, Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, Menorca, Gibraltar or the Spanish Netherlands. It had direct implications in all the Spanish possessions in America, which at that time were 2/3 of the current USA, all of Central America, most of South America and the Philippine Islands. And of all these relevant facts, the only thing it says about Spain is, ¿QUE?, It's ridiculous. How can you ignore that part of history and understand what the War of Succession meant? That war marked the beginning of the destruction of the Spanish Empire and the birth of the British Empire. The war of the Spanish succession radically changed the balance of powers in Europe….¿Qué? omg

The Dutch weren't really losers imo. Their goal of containing France had succeded. Yes, the war was very costly but the Dutch saw the wars against Louis as a fight to stay independent so that was worth every penny

Spain loser? Well, we had the largest empire in the world until 1820. The entire 18th century was one of recovery and prosperity, dozens of Spanish victories against the British, and expansion across Italy, the Great Plains, Florida, Louisiana, Uruguay, Alaska, West Coast of Canada. and the United States, Equatorial Guinea and the archipelagos of the Pacific Ocean. We even gave the 8 real or Spanish dollar to the United States, because it was the most important currency in the world for 300 years. In 1800 the Spanish empire was twice that of the British, with many more civilized people.

@@Spiderfisch Spain had two objectives: to save the Catholic religion and the legacy of Rome in Europe. And Hispanicize-romanize America and the Philippines. 800 million Catholics. 200 million in Europe: Belgium, Luxembourg, South Germany-Palatinate, France, Spanish invasion of Paris in 1590, and Italy, with the 450-year-old Spanish NATO to save Italy against the Turks, who each year had 10,000 people as slaves to Constantinople, before the Spanish empire. 490 million speakers of Spanish as their mother tongue More than the entire Commonwealth speaking English as their mother tongue, the United States speaking English as their mother tongue, the French empire in Africa speaking French as their mother tongue, and the Dutch empire speaking Maternal Dutch, all together. Spanish and Portuguese are the same in 89% of the words. Perhaps we lost financially, because we had to make a colossal investment. But we have an unrepeatable global legacy. Thanks for the video. A good explanation. But as living in Catalonia, I see that you left out the Catalans from your account and how it is then that today's independence issue and conflict between Castilla and Catalonia started... It would be important to add it, once it is something which is still alive today...
@Gloriaimperial14 жыл бұрын
The conflict in Catalonia is a modern invention. In 1714 the Catalans wanted a king of the Austria dynasty, a king for Spain (not for Catalonia). In 1808 they fought against Napoleon's army for the victory of Spain. In 1978 they voted the Spanish constitution with 90% in favor (the most favorable region). In 2005, only 15-20% of Catalans were independentists, according to surveys. So there is no historical continuity of independence. Ups and downs. The party of Jordi Puyol, president of Catalonia, had stolen 3% of all public works, and when they saw the referendum in Scotland, they also saw the sky, to escape justice. And they began to relieve people against Madrid. Maybe they had a long-term plan, but it wasn't a majority support. It has been like a snowball of grievances, many times false. The danger is that it extends to France, Italy, Belgium ... and the European Union is destroyed
