2:53 It's funny how the "F-16 is called Viper because of its resemblance to the Colonial Viper from BSG" went full circle with the BSG re-imagined series, as the Viper Mk.VII looks very much like the F-16. So a Viper looks like a Viper that is called a Viper because it looks like an older Viper.

Quick FYI about the Libyan shoot downs. USS Nimitz had recently been in the movie "Final Countdown" with Kirk Douglas, Katherine Ross and Martin Sheen. In the film, VF 84 Tomcats, Jolly Rogers, 'downed' two Zero fighters and were strutting and puffed up like pigeons. the sister squadron VF41 had no role until Quackydaffy sent two of his planes out to mess with the Yankees. VF 41 performed the job of fixing two of the Libyan air force's maintenance problems. Needless to say, the 84 guys were rather subdued after that. VFA 41, Black Aces, is still with us but VF 84 commissioned in 1995, the year I retired from Uncle Sam's Canoe Club.

The AIM-120 at short range goes pitbull right away, but at long range unless it has support from the AWAS, it needs the on board radar from the aircraft to achieve an initial lock, the when it gets in range of about 20 or so miles it will go pitbull. I don't know if Warthunder has the 120, but that is how it works.

Since when can AIM-120 get guidance from AWAS (AEWS?) ? Seriously asking. Source pls.
@naggarond Жыл бұрын
@@ecpgieicg AMRAAM uses two-stage guidance when fired at long range. The aircraft passes data to the missile just before launch, giving it information about the location of the target aircraft from the launch point, including its direction and speed. This information is generally obtained using the launching aircraft's radar, although it could come from an infrared search and track system, from another fighter aircraft via a data link, or from an AWACS aircraft. Using its built-in inertial navigation system (INS), the missile uses the information provided to it pre-launch to fly on an interception course toward the target After launch, if the firing aircraft or surrogate continues to track the target, periodic updates, e.g. changes in the target's direction and speed, are sent from the launch aircraft to the missile, allowing the missile to adjust its course, via actuation of the rear fins, so that it is able to close to a self-homing distance where it will be close enough to "catch" the target aircraft in the basket (the missile's radar field of view in which it will be able to lock onto the target aircraft, unassisted by the launch aircraft). That Mig-29 was carring a R27-R Radar guided missile and he shot heatseekers into a furball.... Also, the onboard Radar on the AIM-120 only has an effective range of maybe 8nm, for long distance shots, the missile still needs to be supported by either the aircrafts radar, or, in more modern versions, a datalinked aircrafts radar sending positional target data to the missile.

To fill you in on the Viper connection -- the cockpit arrangement of the Colonial Viper is very similar to the F16. So to a _pilot_ it resembles a Viper. Actually, the story doesn't end there either. In BSG 2004, the Mk.7 Viper uses a near perfect copy of an F16 cockpit and the glass is taken directly from old F16s for the production team to work around. And funny you mention jousting because that's a tactic employed by Viper Mk.2 pilots due to the difficulties of maneuvering outside of atmosphere.

I‘m sorry that I have to correct you Jingles. The AIM-120 has a fire and forget mode, but that’s only Within Visual Range or basically the missile goes after the first RADAR-Signature it can lock on. In BVR it still needs at least a Track While Scan Lock because the onboard Radar of the Missile only activates in the Terminal Phase of Missile flight at a maximum of 30 Seconds before impact (at least that’s the current modeling in DCS). The Missile itself at least for the majority of its flight time is guided by Datalink and INS.

Fox-1 (semi-active radar homing or SARH) missiles do have a series of drawbacks, but the good thing is - if you have locked a friendly and realized it in time, you can turn your radar off or deliberately break lock and they lose track and go inert thus missing the target. In reality, at least, not sure how that works in WT. Heat seekers (Fox-2) and Fox-3 (active radar homing) will go for whatever they are locked on, friendly or not... These things, once they go active are nobody's friend...
