At the very least, it still keeps its monster accuracy and penetration. I've seen quite a few successful Tiger drivers who snipe tanks into submission. Kind of fitting seeing as some Allied Tanks ended up getting shot at by Tigers from such large distances.

Jingles, like you said in your clip, Wittmans Tiger recieved a direct hit on the Drivers viewport. I recently made a highly detailed miniature of the Tiger I and noticed, that the drivers viewport and bowmachine gun are both reinforced armour points, so I started to do some research on it and eventually found out that, indeed those points are 100mm extra armour and the viewport is closed while engaging enemies. So why is it, that those points in games like World of Tanks and Warthunder are considered weakpoints?
@Sethiol7310 жыл бұрын
WoT dev "balancing". Cant have an OP german tank. OP russian tank is the only authorized and acceptable OP tank.
@bnipmnaa10 жыл бұрын
I've just been reading a book written by a WWII Tiger commander (Richard von Rosen - "Als Panzeroffizier in Ost und West - Im Panzer III, Tiger und Königstiger in Russland, Frankreich und Ungarn"). He states that the driver's view slit was adjustable from the inside, and was generally kept slightly open when going into combat so that the driver could see where they were going...! (There were two tiny emergency peep-holes above the view slit but these didn't give enough field of vision for driving).
@michaelritzen813810 жыл бұрын
bnipmnaa Slightly open is still not enough to consider it a major weakpoint. considering that the shell (if hitting exactly in the middle of the viewslit) would wedge itself between the armoured plates and maybe hit the 80mm thick laminated glass. Theoretically those slits would have to be closed completely and the driver would move the tank, following directions from the commander, but in practice it would be easier to just open the viewport slightly. And although that might be, World of tanks considers the entire viewport (including those armour blocks) weakpoints, not just the viewslit and Warthunder counts it (according to the armour viewer) as just 100mm thick (instead of the 200mm it would be (100mm upperglacis +100mm armour blocks)). And that is more my point than the glass viewslit itself.

Not sure about two years ago but i think it was then too. It is modelled in game. Ive failed to pen witht SU - 100y's 130mm gun with 230mm of pen. And that sucks in a tank with a long reload, slow reverse and little armor. Though the shell is so big I can miss a Pz 4 with an aphe shell and still kill it with splash.

One of the main reasons we (the USA) didn't development anti-Tiger weapons quickly is because we rarely encountered it. That, and the M4 Sherman managed to defeat Panther enough with the 75mm that it just wasn't necessary. The development of the 76mm high velocity gun helped as well as better Tank Destroyers like the M18 Hellcat or the M8 Jackson. The overwhelming consideration of the M4 Sherman by its crews was that it was a great tank.
@dp95958 жыл бұрын
LOL they literally said that the m4 sherman was a coffin
@InternetStudiesGuy8 жыл бұрын
After they encountered tigers, they deemed the shermans a great grave to get toasted in. As good as I think the sherman was, the superiority of the german armor gave the american crews a trauma that lasts to this day.
@Tigerheart018 жыл бұрын
"Tiger fear" permeated the Western theater Allies. Truth was though that AMERICAN forces only encountered the Tiger 1 three times. First time the Sherman won, second time Pershing lost, and the third time doesn't count because the Tigers were loaded on railway cars. The problem was that American crews tended to report Tigers in their sector as soon as an anti-gun fired and killed a Sherman, it was usually a PAK 40 (which didn't always penetrate) or more likely an 88 emplacement. A lot of German tanks looked "boxy" and similar so a lot of crews identified them as Tigers. Now, British and Canadian forces came up against Tiger much more often. Also the crew death rate of Sherman was better than in a T34... odd that a tank the Germans found hard to kill had more crews lost (percentage wise) than American. The Sherman was easy to bail out of and actually had good survivability on average.
@REgamesplayer8 жыл бұрын

Oh you must be another one of those WoT fan boys who discredits anything that isn't WoT. Just FINDING a tank in sim battles takes about as much skill as any average Joe WoT player can muster. And of course the WT Tiger doesn't have the magical gearbox from another planet like WoT. It can't rocket around the battlefield or jerk back and forth, it has GEARS!!! Oh and my favorite one that WoT scrubs always forget is SHELL DROP!! No CoD point and shoot from 2000m business, you actually have to aim UP and allow for gravity. I will say though, the near point blank engagement is an exception to that because of how close they were. And of course the usual map tactics and teamwork that comes with most multi player games. So tell me again how driving a tank in WT "takes no skill" and how WoT tanks are just oh so hard to drive and shoot???

Cool review but I feel a need to comment on one critical point I disagree with. To be brief it is absurd to argue that Americans were slow to realize the need for better vehicles. They came in late into the party. In the meantime Brits were using American tanks whenever they could put their hands on them. So how long did the experienced Brits (who were engaged in armored warfare from the time O’Connor chased Italians across the desert) take to build a first truly good tanks? Well these have reached front line units before Berlin fell, these were called Centurions, until then, for five years + they were playing catch up. How long did Germans take to match T-34 and KV? How long did Russians take to match Tiger and Panther? Exactly. Americans were not any slower while fighting on two fronts, supplying their allies and moving all gear across the ocean. It is utterly unrealistic to expect that they could field comparable numbers of more capable tanks within the same time frame. Not only that, but they should not have done it and thankfully they did not do it. What was the most common armoured vehicle fielded by Germans? Stug III and related variants (H 42, IV). There were more of these than even Pz IVs. And even in 1945 venerable Pz IV was produced (in stripped down version) in higher numbers than even the Panther never mind the Tiger. And an M4 was a comfortable match for both Stug and Pz IV. Finally, you yourself have quoted Zaloga stating that towed PAK 40 killed more M4s than any armored vehicle. What was the best vehicle to deal with PAK? I’ll submit to you that it needed a fast firing gun with efficient HE ammo, a fast rotating turret and a lot of MGs. What tank would that be? That is right, an M4 with a 75mm gun. Not the 76mm not the 17-pdr (with nearly useless HE ammo if supplied at all).
@shantamu791610 жыл бұрын
Hard to build tanks when your shipping lanes to get them on the ground are hell spots without proper defense. Hard to build them with limited supplies, constant air raids and so on and so forth. Actually the best thing to deal with a pak is another infantryman. Actually they could do it but it would take time and it would indeed have been a screw up.
@russellcoles1110 жыл бұрын
The Matilda was so good, the Germans had to start using their flak guns to take them out (Arras). Once that happened, suddenly the Germans had a whole new antitank gun which changed the way tank warfare would be for the rest of the war. Given that it was impractical to mass produce a new tank capable of withstanding the 88mm, the best tank is therefore the one that does an okay job and can be produced in vast numbers, the T34 and the Sherman. Britain produced several tanks as good as the Sherman but had no hope of producing enough of them. Best thing to deal with antitank guns is artillery, infantry or air support. Only a fool would deploy antitank guns out in the open where you could see them so it doesn't matter what you can shoot from your tank as you will have a hard time spotting them.
@JaneCobbsHat10 жыл бұрын
Russell Coles The Matilda was sooo good and Germans needed to use 88s because their standard AT gun at that time was a 37mm. 50mm and 75mm guns would make short work of Matilda no need to use the 88s. 88s were never a primary AT gun, nor did Germans ever intended them to be. There was no need to produce a tank that would withstand the fire of the 88 because contrary to myths 88s were not all that relevant most of the time. In Africa 50s destroyed more tanks than 88s, in the western and eastern fronts 75s were much more numerous and killed many more than 88s. Until the Comet, none of British tanks was as good as Sherman, Cromwell came close but still had plenty of obsolete antique features (ex: no sloping on riveted (!) armour). first tank that matched contemporary tanks of other nations (M26, T-44, Panther) was the Centurion, until then they were playing catchup. When you have to (note I say "have to", not "have time to choose the best tool available") deal with AT guns or infantry with panzerfaust a tank like M4 was close to optimal given the available technology. And M4s had to deal with PAK or panzerfaust more often than they had to deal with armor.
@NotTheCIA196110 жыл бұрын
JaneCobbsHat When Germany invaded France, there were many occasions where French tanks would be bowling over the Germans, because the Germans couldn't penetrate it. If I recall properly, the '88 first got its notoriety during this period because it was one of the very few guns (if not the only) that Germany had to penetrate the French.
@JaneCobbsHat10 жыл бұрын
Yes certainly as always the most extreme examples ended up being referenced most often. Most French tanks were destroyed by other means and you would be hard pressed to argue that 88s destroyed a significant proportion of even the most heavily armoured French tanks like B2. Same goes for early losses on the eastern front, again according to many 88s were the only weapon capable of killing T-34s and KV-1s. Seriously? Germans must have these attached to every unit all the time or otherwise there was no stopping French and ruskie armour. .

Thanks Jingles. That was a great video. It should be noted that Michael Wittman is probably the only hero in WWII for the Germans that was in the SS and to this day is still revered. He was never connected to any war crimes and his personal legacy survived unscathed.

F1zzzy90 except for the planes who rape you with their 9000kg payload... I do like the slower gameplay and more strategic thinking but the planes break the game right now. And im not even mentioning some of the maps where you can just shoot each other on spawn, where you dont even have to move but just sit there and shoot...
@Detoyato10 жыл бұрын
paladien1 of course it's another matter of actually hitting and penetrating things... especially if you're like a Panzer IV or T-34 and there's IS's and Tigers on the other side of mayhap's 600-1000 meters... Karelia tho... that map feels like it belongs in WoT

For me the WT replay just provided a backdrop to a brilliant overview of the Tiger by Jingles. This was really enjoyable and I seriously think Jingles could do TV history. I much prefer listening to him than Dan Snow for example as there is a depth of knowledge to his words and he's not just a talking hat. Nice one Jingles :)

You're trolling right? I hope you are because that's just a Russian propaganda film, while the 122 was capable of penetration a Tiger I, it was totally in capable of penetration a Tiger II from the front, just like any other allied gun. Even the IS-2's fitted with the 100MM gun couldn't, the 100MM could penetrate roughly 180MM and the 122 about 160, neither of these guns could even penetrate the Tiger II if the armour was flat (Tiger II has 185MM of armour) on top of this, much like the Tiger II the IS-2 came to late in the war to have any major effect, the only notable battle that it had a major part in, I can think of, off the top of my head is the Battle Of Berlin...
@zchen2710 жыл бұрын
The IS-2 can penetrate a Tiger II, but only after five or six shots that caused the upper glacis to fatigue and then shatter. Of course, by the time you are loading the sixth shot you would have been dead four minutes ago.
@brockgowling-hammond736110 жыл бұрын
zchen27 Yeah exactly... Besides I wouldn't call it a penetration, more the fact that the Germans where so low on good quality metal...

Jingles, I really wish you would do more history lessons! I loved this one and consider it one of your best videos. Thank you for mentioning Kurt Knispel too, he was one of the most underrated tank drivers in history. His official number is 168 kills but that number is a bit underrated even because he would frequently "give" his kills to other tank drivers just being thoughtful to help perk them up. It's really sad he died literally at the end of the war.

Thanks for using this video with your history lesson, what an amazing stint of driving. This also shows the Tiger in proper perspective: a lethal killing machine that is difficult to deal with. Unlike WoT, where the Tiger will never face off vesus what it did historically, War Thunder provides a wonderful setting to sandbox in. My biggest problem is spotting enemy tanks in WT, I only saw two or three of the AFVs he was shooting. Wish I could learn something new from you, but alas, my knowledge base is as large as yours, Sir Jingles.

This is a damn beautiful peace of German engineering, but you really have to see it in real life. Last year I visited the German Panzermuseum in Munster. I saw the Tiger standing 20 meters away, his turret was angled to 30 degrees from the front, I looked into the cannon that directly stares to me - I really could feel the fear, every soldier must have had, when he had to face this beast..... Without wanting to give any opinion about which tank was best / worst.... but i did not feel this facing a sherman.

'Every tank a Tiger, every gun an 88' is a familiar quote. As in the first episode of 'Band of Brothers', even artillery pieces were misidentified as 88s. Considering his high status, McNair had a rough war, getting a Purple Heart in Tunisia, which might have been friendly fire, Then being killed by same in Normandy.
@bruvaasmodai525010 жыл бұрын
I was reading some time ago about the rivalry in the development of the tiger prototypes. The greatest example was regarding the turret. When hitler was given the details on the development of his new wonderous heavy tank "that would win the war" he demanded that the tank be fitted with the new and technologicaly advanced rheinmettal 88mm AT gun (this was a bigger, better 88mm gun than that actually fitted) and as a result rheinmettal told krupp (the designers of the turret) to ensure the diameter of the turret was at least 200cm to accomodate the gun breech. Krupp, being rivals to the rheinmettal group manufactured the prototype turrets to be 198cm in diameter. This prevented the new rheinmettal gun being fitted. Upon seing the performance of the kwk42 in the prototype tigers the german top brass accepted the krupp turret and thus forced rheinmettal out of the deal. 2cm between the ultimate tank it could have been and the awesome tank it was.
