Hello Mr. Willis! I’m a 16 year old from Boston and I’ve been playing bagpipes since I was 10. I’ve played with a few different pipe bands from around the area. I learned the GHB because I saw them in the movie Braveheart, little did I know the majority of that soundtrack was Uilleann! I’m working the typical high school job so I don’t have enough money for Uilleann pipes, but I would like to produce Uilleann type sounds with this midi. I’m not good with tech, but if you don’t mind me asking how did you also record the midi sound in GarageBand? Maybe I’m wrong, but I’ve done some Native American flute work with a mic heading to GarageBand, but I’m not sure how to record it through the app. Hope to hear from you! Thank you for all your videos! They have helped me so much!

I wish there was a cheaper way to get it to Europe. Customs+shipping+VAT can add up to 350EUR price! But the device is so versatile, it's much more than a whistle or a bagpipe simulator, you can control any instrument you like. However, it would be nice to have a bit enhanced version with more holes / keys to cover more notes before you need to switch octaves.

Given the choice between the WARBL and a Blair electronic chanter which would you go for? Great videos Matt - I use your piping tutorials a lot.
@MattWillisBagpiper4 жыл бұрын
The WARBL can technically do highland pipes but the inherent latency (delay) of MIDI as a platform (not WARBL's fault) makes playing quite difficult. You'll play a gracenote and... then it comes out. It's not a huge wait, but long enough to mess at least me up. So highland pipes = Blair. Uilleann pipes? They don't use gracenote technique to the degree highland pipers do, so it works much better...
@allannisbet14974 жыл бұрын

Would you recommend this as a platform to learn Uilleann pipes? I’ve never played a wind instrument due to severe asthma, but this intrigues the hell out of me. (As does not having to actually blow on a uilleann)
@MattWillisBagpiper3 жыл бұрын
The water-bottle bag/tube thing doesn't really work very well. If there was a better solution for the pressure issue (having to change pressures for the two octaves), I'd say you could definitely start learning on one of these. As is, you'll spend quite a bit of time messing around with the bag/tube. But it's still fun!
@camelCased2 жыл бұрын
@@MattWillisBagpiper Now it is possible to switch octaves using a button instead of breath pressure. WARBL configuration tool is awesome, you can adjust everything.
@jspiro2 жыл бұрын
@@camelCased It's only $10, but would you still pass on the bag given this change, or does it have it's uses/novelty? More stuff is more stuff to track, so if the button is best, maybe that's the way to go-but how do you play on the knee without the pressure?
@camelCased2 жыл бұрын
@@jspiro I'm mostly used to EWI-style instruments, so I don't have a good opinion about the bag. It might be a good option for bagpipe players, but WARBL is great even without it.
@tranquildoe2 жыл бұрын
@Keith Holcombe I've seen videos of it used as Uilleann pipes with the bag, and it looks and sounds great to me. I think you should give it a try! There is a bagless mode, if you'd rather not deal with it at all (no need for air pressure at all with that), but it sounds better to me with the bag attached, as you can vary the air pressure, and you hear that in the timbre of the sound. I am a flute player, wanting to learn Irish (low) d flute, but have been having very low blood pressure for months. I won't be able to play a wind instrument soon without passing out, so am very excited about the bag option. There's even another option where you can use a button to switch octaves. I am planning to make a drawstring bag in whatever fabric I want, putting that over the water bottle bag, tuck in the strings and it'll look great!
@donross87254 жыл бұрын
Matt, I see the links to information about the WARBLR and the Appcordians, but where do you get the bag that plugs into the pressure sensor? Is it just a real bag and the pressure sensor is designed to sense air pressure from whatever source you have? What about the hose and fitting for the stock. I am just curious here about the parts of the set-up you did not show us in the video. Thanks!
@MattWillisBagpiper4 жыл бұрын
The “bag” featured in the video was purchased through the WARBL site. warbl.xyz/purchase.html

I'm torn between this and the Glencoe chanter- mainly because this can also play uillean pipe sound, which i do plan to learn. However, It says it has highland pipe fingering- in which case, is it even worth it to get this? It may mess me up if i plan to learn uillean pipes later.
@MattWillisBagpiper3 жыл бұрын
While the WARBL does allow for highland pipe fingering, the latency/delay (due to MIDI, nothing directly to do with this unit) makes it awkward in my experience for highland piping. But the WARBL is fantastic as a uilleann “practice” chanter!

Hello Matt! Firstly: I don't think I've commented on any of your videos before, but I've listened to some of them and I think it's really cool what you do on this channel. Simply put, I find bagpipes to be quite a fascinating musical instrument especially because of how they work, even if I have no real intention on playing them! If you don't mind, I'd like to present to you my thoughts on the whole idea of electronic bagpipes in general. I have quite a bit of feelings about it, so presenting these would require a pretty lengthy comment. So... I'd like to ask, would you care to read a lengthy comment? I only ask this because there are likely people out there who only want short, straight-to-the-point comments that only require like a couple sentences or something. Then they get pissed off because someone's comment is too long (right, like they can't take 5 or 10 minutes out of their day to read a longer comment? :/)
@MattWillisBagpiper2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome to leave a longer comment, but I'd leave it as a new comment (KZbin makes it hard for me to see replies to a comment and often miss them).

Hey Matt quick question. When I’m covering all the holes and I lift it off my leg the pipe still makes no noise. It doesn’t hit the lowest note when it’s off my leg only in the Uilleann pipe app. In the warbl interface it works fine, but the Uilleann pipe app it doesn’t for some reason. Any ideas?

That's pretty good, but nothing beats properly played (real) uilleann pipes in my opinion. The new fad of electric instruments may not actually be as good of a thing as we think.
@MattWillisBagpiper4 жыл бұрын
Very true. There are a few times where real ones just won't work. I've tried to properly set up a microphone for a set during a rock show, and the best I could do was a mic in the windcap and a ton of EQ of fix how funky it sounded, but there was no way to mic it from outside with the sound pressure of the bass and drums. In that case, this really can be a life changer. I'd rather play a MIDI uilleann pipe than just have them on a track in the background.
