Sometimes, I am jumping right in to get shells! This was filmed in May, so the ocean is still pretty cold at that time of year. I was thinking about the 4K comments recently - I was in Florida shelling for a couple of days and it was so hot I had to film in 1080 because my phone was over heating in 4K, lol! Thanks as always for watching!

I hope I get to go to these beaches one day! So many beautiful shells I have never seen before! Those yellow periwinkles are just the cutest!!! I adore periwinkle snails. They’re fun critters to watch when they’re active, too. In North Carolina, I found lots of Wampum that were very smooth on the broken edges so they resemble river rocks. They are worn so smooth they look like they were never part of a shell. I collected a lot of it to make some jewelry, but I haven’t gotten around to that project yet. It’s really beautiful how the purple and sometimes purple and orange layer through the whole shell.

Another beautiful journey and video. You take us to such great shelling destinations and inspire us all. We've never shelled in the northeast but your video nudges us to be sure to do that when we head up there next time. The deep blue colors on some of the shells up there is really amazing. Great proof you don't need to be somewhere tropical to enjoy shelling and find some treasures. Great work as always and thank you for such a lovely video.

Hi Shell friend! Shell variety in the colder, northern seas, while not as plentiful as the tropics, can be absolutely AMAZING if you put in the research, and effort! Would love to see a Shell Nuts cold water episode! 💙 I love your channel as well! SE Florida shelling is my favorite type of shelling in FL - it can often be hit or miss, but when it's good, it's GOOD! Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much for your cold water shelling videos. I never would have thought of shelling in the Baltic in Denmark earlier this week on vacation if your videos had not inspired me. There were so many blue mussels, dogwinkles, dog whelks, periwinkles and soft shelled clams.

@@solaceinshelling6552 It was cool to shell there. The beach we visited was small though. I did specifically look for neptunes as well as scallops. I probably would have found a neptune if I had visited more beaches. My son even helped me out when he was swimming. He found a large, hinged, empty, soft shelled clam for me. He said there were tons of live ones as well as cockles with lots of eyes skipping around. Too bad I did not have tolerance for colder water. I would have loved to watch those cockles skip around. How fun!

The notata quahogs are often hatchery-raised (or their descendants), especially if the markings are prominent. The aquaculture farms breed them for that characteristic as a tag to differentiate them from wild clams. In areas where hatchery babies are put in the water to boost the shellfish population (conservation efforts), you will find a lot of nice notata quahogs!

I always wondered why you chose Maine as the location for many of your videos considering all the different options for places to shell at. Are you from Maine? A fan of cold water shells? Or is it due to nostalgia? I also just returned from a one day trip to Newport Beach, California (7 hours one way driving) for the sole purpose of finding a Solander's trivia shell. I highly recommend going to Santa Barbara, Monterey, or renting a car and visiting both if you decide to go shelling in California some day. The shells here aren't as plentiful as Florida but the scenery is hands down the best in the country in my opinion. If you love abalones and top shells, California will be paradise. If you decide to visit someday, I can give you the exact locations where I've had the most success since a lot of spots don't have many shells.

Hi friend, I am originally from northern New England and have lived in Maine on and off throughout my life. I also spent much of my childhood at the beach and shell collecting here. I shell collect when, and where I am able to, but I will say that since I have created Solace in Shelling, I have been much more intentional in carving out specific time in my schedule to shell and film. I would love to shell in California, and hope to get over to that coast some day in the future! Thanks for watching!

@@solaceinshelling6552 That's pretty cool! I lived in Western Massachusetts for 4 years and was born in Albany, NY, but my love for shelling was rekindled in 2022 on an unexpected trip to the Bahamas. Since then, most of my trips to look for shells have been to Northern California beaches near my home. I was extremely lucky to also get the opportunity to go shelling in Southwest Florida and India since I started collecting again.

Why is there ALWAYS sea glass on the beaches of Maine? Nice explore, stay safe
@solaceinshelling6552
@solaceinshelling6552 9 ай бұрын
Interesting question! Sea glass starts out as shards of broken glass from bottles, jars, glassware, tableware or even shipwrecks. Historically, it was common to dump garbage in the water, glass from trash was dumped into the sea, especially along shipping lanes and shorelines - this glass over time, gets tumbled by wave action and washed ashore. In Maine, rocky shorelines help to keep sea glass from washing back out to sea, when it washes in with the tides. Thanks so much for watching!

Collecting dead shell specimens in moderation should never be a problem along Maine beaches - so long as the area is not an environmentally protected area. I always recommend checking local rules and regulations before visiting a location to know exactly what is, and is not allowed. Thanks for watching!
