Probably more than half of the significant battles of the heresy were coordinated by Iron warriors and there were iron warriors participating in most of these battles. Ironically without the Iron Warriors two loyalist primarchs would be dead and the Crimson Fists (capable and compassionate successor chapter of the Imperial Fists) would never be formed but the galaxy wouldn't have tyranids to deal with. If you're interested to look into this further check out Barabas Dantioch. Strong contender for favourite character of the heresy and that means he's directly competing against Sanguinius.

I doubt any other legion would have been able to withstand such a campaign. As I have already written, the 4th Legion are not warriors or heroes, they are soldiers who dutifully bear the burden of their service. But everyone around didn't care what sacrifices the 4th Legion made, and this probably became the decisive argument for betrayal. There are quite a few Renegade Chapters that fight both against the Imperium and Chaos (many will eventually fall to Chaos though), some of them even wanting to protect the humans from both organisations' depredations, while others are just maniacs that fight against all, and everything inbetween.

The Iron Warrior's are probably one of the saddest stories in 40K. They were potentially one of the most capable and centred Legion's, but had the misfortune of serving under perhaps the most fickle and petty of the Primarch's. They could never please Pertuarbo, they could never live up to his insane expectations, nor could they achieve their potential under him. Yes, many agreed with the sentiment of rebellion because they saw themselves as unappreciated and deserving of more than they had been given (again, largely due to Pertuarbo constantly telling them this), but they likely would have stayed loyal long enough to gain the recognition they so desperately craved. If anything, many of them fundamentally were closer to the Emperor's ideals in the Traitor Legion's than any but perhaps Fabius Bile, who is closest to the Emperor in terms of what he strives for (and deeply respected the Emperor's ability and goal even if he fought against it), but is obviously extremely corrupted.

Peturabo is complicated. He isn't fickle for no reason. He was a visionary, builder, inventor and he was reduced to engineer of war. Every design of beautiful buildings, gardens, etc. was tossed aside. It broke him.

Out of all the legions the iron warriors are my favorite. Say what you will about perty in my opinion he should've been recognized, he should've been rewarded for his ability to destroy. Instead he was cast aside for someone who was pretty and could talk nice and keep his composure.

There’s just something about using conventional warfare, attrition, and raw strength just because you hate everything and everyone in an era where it’s not entirely necessary that i love about the 4th legion. Best example is you could use scouts and aircraft to probe enemy defenses but instead you just send prisoners and civilians forward to their deaths instead to get the same results

Yeah actually the first to fall to Nurgle of all legions was the Luna wolves. They actually brought the warp storm to Perturabo and said that there was a throne for the lord of Iron but he refused. He eventually teams with typhus to make the Nemesis Wyrm to attack forge world metallica and he creates a techno virus for the obliterator cult if memory serves
