But we do have some Latin writings that explain the Carthaginian’s colture to the Roman’s and the facts that they didn’t make a huge distinction for their character o physiology means that they dress and act and were really similar to southern /Mediterranean (Sicily ,Greece , etc) … We need to take in consideration also that the Main colony for them were Spain and south Italy not Africa … If you mix all of this information it’s totally acceptable a white but a dark tone (after uv lamp and dark hair)or a olive skin color …

Yeah it’s strange how people nowadays can’t fathom that the massive, larger than many countries, sized desert could possibly impact movement of peoples, culture, trade, or ethnicity on either side in a pre-modern world. North Africa has had a lot more interaction with the rest of the Mediterranean, and the Middle East, than sub-sahara Africa has had. Another interesting thing about Hannibal: His war elephant might have been the last Syrian Elephant in history. For those that don't know, the Syrian elephant was the largest species of Asian elephant that survived into historic times, reaching an average height of 11.5 ft (bigger than the Indian species). Tying it back to Hannibal, his elephant was named "Surus" aka The Syrian and was known to be the largest one around. So, if this is to be believed, that makes Hannibal's elephant the last of its kind, and it went down swinging. What a badass.

This being said we know hannibal’s brothers and father looked like, thanks to the cartheginian coins that depicted them. Having a correct depiction of a ruler was very important, as it was one of the very few ways for people to identify them when seen in public. Personally i don’t understand why we don’t have stories from netflix about Massinissa, Who was allied to Carthage during the second Punic war, and was very probably black…since he came from a southern region of the Carthaginian empire… he was a great ruler and important figure at the time, yet those entitled, money hungry cretins at the platform aren’t able to do any friggin research so we’ll find ourselves to believe in some pseudo historical capitalistic bs… as it always is when Americans get involved in history portraying..

@@OctopusH2O Because , like any region surrounding the mediterranean , our history is rich and complicated and filled with migrations . But before Islam , no one in north Africa spoke Arabic , yet the overwheliming majority wasn't black ( and they either spoke Latin African , Tamazight or Punic language ..) you can already see how each 'migration' left it's mark on the local population . The local population itself , when you go back 12.000 years ago is also mixed , with Iberomaurosians ( who are also mixed ANA which is a local north African type , and Dzudzuana which is a caucasion type) and Anatolian farmers . So since thousands of years ago , north Africa had tight connections to the middle east, while developping it's own identity and culture .Now with the migrations of Arabs after the spread of Islam ( after berbers embraced the religion ) there were many alliances and intermixing with Arabs , for instance , in my country Tunisia most of us are descendants of these alliances , so there's no way you can trace your heritage back to one tribe ( it also helps that the Amazighs and Arabs were so smiliar , both desert people , both tribe oriented..etc and as i've already mentioned that all people across MENA are genetically and unknowingly culturally connected ! ) that eased the Arabs' fusion with the local population , eased the learning of the language ( also the spoken punic across some parts of north Africa also helped with the spread of the language , being a semitic language itself), and eventually created a new identity that most north Africans embraced which is the Arab identity and now have their own blend of Arab-Amazigh culture. That being said , millions of Amazighs still speak their language and keep their own identity untouched . Also copts and other small ethnicities . All of this to tell you that identity , ethnicity and race are not as simple as black or white . It is shaped through many many migrations and historic events , and the mediterranean and north Africa in particular had tons of that .

And then we have the Severan tondo which you can look at online today it's still in pretty good condition where the emporer who was from a ethnically punic community has a brown skin tone. And I don't believe it's due to intermixing because the punic community was tightly knit especially severus's family I mean for goodness sake he was embarrassed by his family because all they spoke was punic dialects, where as Latin and Greek were the respectable languages in the empire. However it should be noted that Severus despite being the same ethnicity as Hannibal was born hundreds of years later so it's not conclusive proof but It's pretty good evidence of how he mightve looked. Well, Race is arbitrary and meaningless, but Black is an actual ethnic group. Historically, White used to have a meaning, a very racist meaning based in Anglo-Germanic chauvinism mind you, but a meaning. That eventually faded away as more and more groups got lumped into it as Anglo-Americans and British culture became less and less influential in the United States. Now it's a catch all for a hundred different Euro-American communities. Black on the other hand started out being entirely arbitrary (cause lumping all Africans into the category of "black" basically makes no genetic or cultural sense) until it eventually evolved into an actually functioning Ethnic descriptor for the descendants of enslaved African Americans. Like, you can say "Black Culture" and it would be referring to Black Americans and their unique cultural and linguistic traditions and heritage, excluding those of Africa and other communities within African diaspora.

The biggest change in ethnicity came during the 7th and 8th century where the newly formed Islamic Empire, the Umayyid Caliphate, conquered the middle east and then went on to conquer northern africa and spain. While spain was shortly reconquered north africa became the actuall cultural, political and economic center of the Islamic empire for about 500 years - which of course meant lots of ethnic arabs started to settle in northern africa and intermix with the locals. During the end stages of the empires when the slave trade became the most profitable trade in the region, slave traders started to selective breed slaves of different ethnic together, primarily certain northern african lower class peoples and slaves captured in sub saharan africa and southern europe aswell as scandinavia, who after the empire collapsed couldnt be sold and remained there. According to Genesis which is one of the five books of the Pentateuch, the Sidonians who were the original inhabitants of modern day Lebanon known for their exceptional skills in ship building and seafaring according II Kings were descendants of Ham, which according to Hebrew tradition is the progenitor of the dark skinned or Negroid races of today including the Canaanites who historically established themselves in Lebanon and Palestine, influencing much of the regions culture, language and genetics. The ancient Middle East however was racially diverse and was not inhabited by a single racial group, as we know people from Anatolian from Urartu and Hattusa and the Ugaritic speaking Semitic population of Syria inhabited the ancient Middle East also. My best guess as to what Phoenicians or Tyrians of the Iron Age looked like could probably best be exemplified by Cypriot or Cyprian artwork, who do seem to have been a Anatolian/Canaanite Syrian inspired mixture, and these people were likely what the ancient Phoenicians looked like. The reason this is a problem to begin with is because of racist ideological views like Nordicism in the past have attributed all of the great accomplishments of the ancient world to Nordic or Aryan peoples(a pseudonym for northwestern Europeans). This is still a problem that is extant in academic and scholarly circles today, where ancient historical figures such as Tutankhamun are claimed as having had red hair and is supposedly related to over half of modern western European men today, and is still a commonly held belief by many even though historic and ethnographic evidence proves the ancient Egyptians were African/Afro-Asiatic in the ethnic, linguistic and biological sense, not related to people from countries with a Celtic or Germanic basis today. I think all of that taken into consideration, it's fair to say that "white supremacist ideology" is the reason why all of this confusion about race and ethnicity in the ancient world exist. Afrocentrism on the other hand came into existence to counteract white supremacist historical revision delineated by Anglo-Celtic intellectuals, but gradually went from being a movement meant to correct racist views and attitudes on sub-Saharan African history and civilization, like whether or not metallurgy or written language was achieved by sub-Saharan Africans on their own or whether whites introduced these things to sub-Saharan Africa, to just being about trying to prove that blacks are a superior race and are responsible for every major civilization to ever exist on earth even in places as far away from Africa as Mexico where the Olmec culture originated.

I worked retail for three and a half years, 3 years of that about 45m from the Canadian border and met at least a DOZEN guys white as me, that were south African. My neighbor where I live now is from South Africa, he's white as well with red hair. But definitely doesn't *sound* white if that makes any sense? Neither did any of the men I met in retail. Okay, so for starters we have genealogies for every race according to the ancient Hebrews who actually lived during the Bronze Age in Biblical scripture. Meaning the ancient Hebrews would be one of our best sources for what people alive during the Bronze Age would have looked like.

@TONYSTARK557 not really. Hannibal being black or not doesn't matter. Though it's incredibly unlikely given everything historians do know about him. When I first read about Hannibal I had no knowledge of Africa beyond Egypt. So I assumed he was black and later found out that I was almost certainly 100% wrong. The real issue is that it's just weird to go around assigning an ethnicity without any evidence to support the claim. That Netflix Cleopatra "documentary" did this even when all evidence was to the contrary. I don't agree with any form of ethnic washing(akin to white washing) of history. I don't care if they are a minority or their ancestors experienced oppression and slavery, it still isn't okay to undermine historical truth.

If you look at world history very little of it, focuses on anything but Mainland, Europe and Britain very little of it talks about China, Arab countries and Africa and part of the reason for this is because no one cared to talk to Africans about their history and a lot of them did not write it down but spread it through stories and also a lot of it was burned and destroyed During fighting sparked by colonist, colonist, destroying empires and racking their land, and just outright genocide of different cultures.
