I didn’t know “denn” makes sentences friendlier😅 I always thought Germans say denn only when they are angry or irritated 😂thanks Anja for clarifying it!

Thank you Anja! I am playing Stardew Valley in german to learn and increase my vocabulary for everyday things (it's a farming game, it has animals, housestuff, plants, geography...), and the characters there speak casually, so there are many things that confuse me and that a regular course wouldn't teach, such as this, I'm seeing a lot of "denn"'s.

My high school German teacher often used this type of "denn" when we'd do/say something she didn't expect/approve of, e.g. Was ist denn das? Nice to see it finally explained in plain English (sowie Deutsch)!

That’s interesting as it sounds very similar to we use “then” here in Britain. We often say “what’s happened here then?” to express surprise, be it positive or negative. It probably translates to “then” in that usage, and, helpfully, sounds almost identical as well! 😅

It would be nice if someone who knows German really well could tell me if "denn" can be used in sentence with meaning like "for" or "because". One example from Skyrim that I have come across is „Liebe Mutter, liebe Mutter, schicke mir dein Kind, denn die Sünden der Unwürdigen müssen in Blut und Furcht getauft werden.“ I have been using Skyrim to learn a new language because it involves so much interaction with the new language.
@robman20955 жыл бұрын
Grom Hellscream yes it means “because” when it is used as a conjunction.
@shaun_rambaran6 жыл бұрын
Interessant! It reminds me of something I've heard sometimes with some UK speakers (on television shows and so on) who stick the random word 'then' into some of their questions, saying for example, "So, how are you doing then?" "What are you lads up to, then?" I'm wondering if it's entirely possible to overuse them? If a person uses 'denn' too often while speaking, do they come across sounding too 'weak'?

Gustav does that all the time. He also called a pen a Kuli when I was expecting to hear "kugelschreiber." I showed him a pen and asked "Was ist das?" And he said "Ein Kuli." I'm living with a person who speaks German & can't speak English fluently. He asks "Was ist ihr Problem, denn? Somehow, I don't think that question, "Was ist ihr Problem?" can be made more casual.

Whats the difference in the A1-C2 meanings? Are they different levels and how would we know what level we are? I took German in High School and would love to see where i still am.
