First of, the 2016 Arbitral Ruling is not illegal. It is very legal not just in the Philippines but also accepted globally and has become part of UNCLOS. Only China continues to insist that it is illegal, despite being an UNCLOS signatory. Secondly, China's sovereignty claim over areas within its so-called 9 or 10-dash line has already been declared illegal and this ruling was accepted globally. Thirdly, China cannot claim sovereignty over the area by using historical claims because even its history and historical maps did not consistently and clearly define the Spratly Islands, Scarborough Shoal, and even the the Paracel Islands as its own territory. Lastly, China cannot claim the South China Sea as its own lake and part of its territorial waters because it is not a lake and its not within their land boundaries. Even if China includes Taiwan as its territory, it is not enough to support a claim of sovereignty over the SCS, more so the WPS.

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to which China is a signatory, mandates states to respect Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) as a legal basis. An EEZ is an area extending 200 nautical miles from a country's coastline, within which the country has special rights regarding the exploration and use of marine resources. However, China seeks to extend its territory well beyond its EEZ, disregarding the territorial claims of Southeast Asian countries. Despite an arbitration court ruling that declared China's actions lacked a legal basis. Unlike most nations that settle territorial dispute this way, in a respectful and peaceful manner, China refuses to honor the court decision. They even threaten war. This behavior demonstrates China's greediness in pursuing expansive territorial claims, undermining international agreements, and the sovereignty of neighboring nations. China disregards its own agreement and international laws which it willingly entered into. At this point, how can you trust China? Beware, just another Putin!

When Japan colonized Taiwan, the islands and reefs in the South China Sea were under the jurisdiction of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. After Japan was defeated and returned to Taiwan, the islands and reefs in the South China Sea were naturally returned together. This is the right that China, as the victor in World War II, should have, unless you have the ability to overturn the world consensus formed after World War II. Moreover, at the end of World War II, the Philippines was still colonized by the United States. The United States recognized China's rights and interests in the South China Sea and sent warships to help build national boundary markers on the islands and reefs in the South China Sea. When the Philippines was founded, its territorial scope continued the scope of the United States colonial period, east of 118 degrees east longitude. The same is true for old maps of the Philippines before the 1970s. The Philippines now claims sovereignty over the islands and reefs west of 118 degrees east longitude, and actually occupies these islands and reefs that should belong to China. Who do you think is bullying whom?

Weapons have many forms, military alliance is another form of weapon. Philippines can gain power by building alliances with nearby and slightly far countries like Australia and New Zealand and Japan and Taiwan. Attack can be physical and it can be in a form of reputation. By recongizing or threaten to build relationship and recognise Taiwan, can make china to rethink it's action. Direct confrontation is like attacking the frontal gate of a walled city, it is the most fortified region of the city. By recognising Taiwan, it attacks the sovereignity of China, by attacking the region that China cannot defend. It cannot do anything if Philippine build counselate on Taiwan, hence China is defenseless over it. Never strike the strongest region of a defence, always aim at the weakest spot.

Stop calling in South China Sea if you can't even understand the unclos! To clarify, the Philippines' claim on Spratlys (aside from a few natural islands) are not territorial, but simply in context of an EEZ. An EEZ is not territorial water, but enforcement of international laws is within the obligation of the nation or nations controlling an EEZ. If two nations have overlapping EEZ's, then it is their obligation to talk in relation to sharing of resources within the shared EEZ. China, in this regard, is regarded by UNCLOS as an outsider in any such talks regarding Spratly's. The only ones who can are the Philippines, Malaysia, etc, who shares the overlapping EEZ. In regards to Scarborough shoal which is not part of Spratlys, the claims of China (and by extension, Taiwan) was also effectively rejected by the same court ruling. The Philippines is the sole legal claimant of the said shoal, and anyone else is basically an illegal settler. Also, speaking of natural islands, China doesn't even control ANY natural island in the Spratly group of islands. Even Taiwan is ahead of them in terms of controlling a natural island so they are relegated into destroying coral reefs to have some semblance of a claim. And that's the contentious part since reefs cannot be considered as territory, but falls under an EEZ and extended continental shelf which can only be exploited by the nations surrounding it. Taiwan controls the largest island, Vietnam controls 9 large islands, the Philippines controls 7 islands, and Malaysia controls 1. China's claims is basically flimsy. If the Philippines is as aggressive as China, then we can easily militarize any one of those islands. But we're a peace loving country #2 Any such historical claim has already been addressed in the UNCLOS decision. It's all basically a bunch of story of Chinese tourists setting up camp, alluding to an ambiguous island, and not even claiming that those belongs to China. By that very logic, then Ancient India belongs to China just because they visited it, which is absurd. In regards to the islands, the CCP throughout the decades kept moving which island is which based on convenience. Even the so-called observatories were never found and could never have possibly existed due to size on the rocks (this one specifically referring to Scarborough Shoal, where the CCP claims to have built an observatory in Ancient times) that China has been claiming. As I have said, China neither owns nor controls ANY natural island in the area. What was clarified in the 2016 ruling under UNCLOS, which China is a signatory of, is that a country can only claim territories based on NATURAL ISLANDS. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Taiwan are the only ones who controls natural islands in the Spratlys and therefore are the sole countries with legal claim to an EEZ within those territories. China, in effect, is an illegal settler. China's claim of ownership over the sea itself has also been overturned by UNCLOS due to its incompatibility with modern international treaties, laws and agreements. Not to mention, what's been stated in history as part of China's seas has been ambiguous at best, and could also have been simultaneously claimed by any of the other nations. That doesn't make it a valid claim in any modern internationally recognized world order.

SCS or WPS, both are correct. West Philippine Sea only refers to the portion of SCS that is claimed by PH within its exclusive economic zone. The island where they are supposed to deliver supplies is within Philippines EEZ. But you should take in mind that SCS is used long before "WPS", which refers to the entire contested sea. But it doesn't mean that if we call is SCS is China owns it. A similar logic is applied that even we call it "Indian Ocean", it doesn't mean India owns the entire ocean. Asserting other people to call it WPS without explaining it will give a wrong impression to people who doesn't know what you're talking about.

I would say the Chinese written record do exist first, but whether if thats enough for claiming the whole south China sea is debatable. But modern international laws system is kind of building on these written records, so things become complicated. Hard to say it is fair for Philippines, but it is also hard to persuade the Chinese government to give up this valuable land to an American ally. The only thing not that bad is, there still no casualty exist by now, and I think the Chinese government is smart enough to prevent the war and will not claim the Philippines mainland in 10 years. But I do agree the act of Beijing government is becoming more and more imperialistic, just like another united states. Hope Washington and Beijing are both calm enough to prevent the potential war in south China sea.

The CCP has built an artificial island in Mischief reef in 2012 which is closer to the Second Tomas Shoal than in the Sabina Shoal and Palawan island. Thus, they are able to send numerous Coast Guard, Navy and Maritime Militia vessels. Another challenge of the Philippines is that they need smaller ships for resupply to reach the shallow waters where BRP Sierra Madre is grounded. Bigger coast guard ships such as the one boarded by the reporters cannot go close enough to the grounded ship, which is why they only act as escorts. However, China always separates the resupply boat and Philippine Coast guard ship to distrupt the resupply mission.
