TheSpritz0 If you had both like I do, you’d see is the other way around, SKX is build to significantly higher durability standards, and usability is also better. Things like applied indices are ridiculous to bring up, it’s just a designs/ruggedness choice, you can find applied indices on $5 watches and painted indices/logos on $20000 watches. Hacking and hand winding are extra features, not really as important as some people makes them to be but whatever. I love both watches for what they are, in my collection they don’t really compete with each other they are too different.

Nice one, but per square mm the lume is the same, there is just more on the SKX. Try comparing the Ray to the SKX and you will be hard pressed to tell the difference. The one thing that would give the knockout blow to the Mako and send it out for the count is that the SKX is ISO certified, and you didn't mention it in the rounds. Why not duel the SKX withe Citizen Promaster NY0040? That would be a great contest.
@wijayaj0016 жыл бұрын
robbiecox agree the ray has lume on par with the seiko skx, the mako... Its so weak. I got the skx013, mako I, and RAY II, and the ray is on par with the skx013. Interesting comparison. I suggest the lume differential may be due to the size of the markers, with the Orient being small and thin. One area not covered is power reserve. Which carries the greater length. IMHO that also adds value to the one which carries the greater length.

Very happy with the watch. Plus I got it for $130US with a discount from Long Island Watch. I suggest using the price difference from the Seiko to take your significant other out for a couple drinks to mollify the effect of buying just one more watch.

Great comparison. I do agree that the Mako crown is too small in relation to the crown guards. It’s completely flush when screwed down, and difficult to hand wind because of the small diameter. It’s also a pain to screw back down. Also, the Mako’s bracelet seems to me to be, while good quality, it’s seems like it was made for a larger watch case then what the Mako has.
@lonnythompson81316 жыл бұрын
The Ray would score higher , you knocked Maco for only 10 minutes markers on bezel but ray has 15, the numbers are also larger and better looking, also critiqued hand length on mako, Ray has unique and better looking hands. Also the case on sks is not better.

Great head to head. I own both the Mako USA II with the white dial and an SKX007 and I’m kinda torn between the two. The movement on the Orient was dead on accurate out of the box running about +/- 2s/day and has remained so. The SKX took me a long time to get regulated on my timegrapher and has to be set about +15 to get a real world regulation of about +/- 2s/day and even still has a greater variation in accuracy than the Orient. And the Orient Mako USA II has its own X-factor with solid end links and a thicker sapphire crystal and a custom USA dial design, but that puts it quite a bit above the Seiko pricewise unless you can pick one up on sale like I did direct from OrientWatchUSA.com which for now is the sole source of that model. I love ‘em both and I get about equal compliments on both too. My only complaint about the Mako is the bezel as it doesn’t have that buttery smooth feeling like the SKX. Given that my version of the Mako has applied indices and a different set of hands, its lume is equal to the Seiko too. I agree on the comfort factor of Seiko’s jubilee - most comfortable bracelet I own. Here’s a link for anyone who might be interested in the Mako USA II as I happen to think it’s a real looker. www.orientwatchusa.com/product-category/mens-watches/diver/makousaii/

I just recieved my Mako II yesterday and, after wearing it for less than 24 hours, I think I agree with your score. I would probably drop the bezel on the Orient a bit more and maybe raise it on the Seiko, though. It's not really that the Mako's is super stiff, it's just that it's hard to grip. My 007 is really smooth and easy to operate. I have a $45 Casio Duro with a much better bezel than the Orient. I will say, though, the bracelet on the Mako is miles ahead of that rattle trap on the Seiko. I replaced the jubilee on the 007 with a nato strap years ago, while I'll most likely leave the Mako on the factory bracelet. It's not great but it's pretty darn good considering the price ($145 from Amazon) of the watch. I'm still getting a feel for the Mako so it'll probably be a while before I make my final judgement but I'm certainly liking it so far. If I already had a more dressy watch and could only have one dive watch, it would be the 007. It just seems to be the perfect size for me and there is something cool about its utilitarian look. That being said, though, if you're looking for just one watch (one watch, lol, yea right!) I think the Orient, particularly the blue dial version, is a more versatile watch. It's sporty enough to be very casual and just sharp enough for a more formal, or at least, semi formal setting. Admittedly, I'm a notorious Seiko fanboy but I really don't think you can go wrong with either of these watches. And, to me, hand winding is a HUGE deal! Anyway, great review and comparison.

Regarding the lume, it appears to me that the Orient graphics have more luminescent resolution than the Seiko. You can see that the day/date is illuminated much more legibly, but maybe your lens distorts on the right side (Seiko side) a bit? Also, the illuminated minute hashes on the Seiko face are designed larger than the corresponding minute hashes on the Orient, giving one the impression that the Seiko puts out more light. Can you tell I am a Mako II owner? I find that my Mako has much more luminescence than my Seiko and the luminescence lasts longer too. My Seiko died at 4 years and the cost to repair it was 1/2 of what I paid for the danged watch. Just my experience.

great video (just received my MAKO today) Jody, however I believe you cannot weigh your categories evenly - movement matters much more than other categories, such as bezel or lume, and should count for much more in the overall scoring. The movement is the heart of the watch. The SKX's movement's age and inability to hack and hand wind (and probably less accurate) should definitely place it below the Mako. Please keep the great and entertaining videos coming...!!!

I prefer the value presented by the Orient. Great video!

Crystal should have had same points, as you did say there was no difference. Benefit of the doubt should not afford an extra point. Lume is almost the same, so maybe 1 extra point to Seiko, not 3. X factor and brand could as well been the same category. It feels like you wanted to have Seiko win, and you afforded it some dubious penalty kick in injury time, as a referee... Also Bracelet, I'd give one point extra to the Orient. Although I would have been harsher with the Mako about the bezel. I had the Mako I, and it felt almost impossible to turn the bezel with wet hands, Also the 10 minute instead of 15 minute marked on the bezel seems like a mistake.

I liked this video, and agree with most of your scorings, though I went with a Mako II for the movement, and I just liked the overall look better. I have a Seiko SNK, and I don't enjoy the Seiko Shuffle, or the inexact setting of the time.

I really like that the 2 watches were equal except for the 2 subjective sections. For me it would be the Ray II all the way due to that wonderful blue sunburst dial and the hand winding and hacking movement

I have a mako 2 and a skx033. They do both get significant wrist exposure so i'm really enamored w/ the both of them. I have to say though that if you compare the dials of the skx033 and of the skx007/9, the face of the former is much prettier w/ its applied indices and framed day/date indicators. It's a real downer that seiko decided to discontinue the skx033 line

I have both black and blue Makos, a Triton/Neptune as well as the 009, Dracula Monster and a Sumo. Love them all but, I did replace the bracelets with various strap codes on all of them. I think the lume is comparable but, the Makos have smaller indices. I also have the Orient Flight and Sun and Moon version 2 in blue. Neither of them hack or hand wind so, that isn’t a deal breaker. For all the above I think the value for money is pretty darn good.

Take away xfactor and brand, and they tie. Regardless, I much prefer the Orient logo on the watches

Once you factor in the customization w/ modding, the SKX is unbeatable. The Orient is still an awesome watch. Buy both!

90% of us here have never required lume on any watch ever haha, love it though, always brings a smile to my face when you duel classics

Think you find the lume on the orient ray is a lot better than the mako. The indices allow more lume to be applied on the ray

Jody, as you mentioned, I am one of those whose salient points are the movement and the value. That is why I possess an Orient Mako 2 and not a Seiko SKX!

Balderdash! Who gives equal weight to the movement and the bezel? Incorporate the bezel into dial+hands maybe and add a category for Uniqueness! What connoisseur wants the same thing everyone else has? The X-Factor in this video was just “everyone says it’s great, so therefore it’s great.” Seiko fanboys abound. Bah. Also, your ratings would be better if you said what different watch would have received a 10 in each category, e.g., the best movement/build quality/bracelet you can expect in a $200 diver. Harrumph!

Senna! Missed you at Monaco today my friend. Agree that certain categories could be double or even triple weighted. I'll see what happens next time I do one of these. Cheers!

A major thing about the Seiko is its a legit dive watch (ISO certified), which makes it much better than the Orient imo. Also it has a unique style, and is not trying to copy anything else

I have a Japanese domestic manufactured SKX. It is generally a good watch but it had one MAJOR FLAW. The crown is very hard to manipulate. Unfortunately for me where the threads on the case wear away to the point where the threads will not engage the crown. Maybe it is a one off but this is a serious flaw..

Orient are very famous and respected here in Brazil, even more known than Seiko. They are watches that brazilians use to buy and trust for a lifetime. They are almost undestructible! I've seen some in the wrists of construction workers that were beaten, scratched and heavily mistreated for decades and survived. Seiko on the other hand is a brand slightly more difficult to find, and are much, much more expensive around here.

Would have liked to have seen SKX v's Ray2 v's 7042 Invicta (NH36A)... would have been fairly closely matched but covering various and wider price points.

I'm going with the Ray 2. The lume and dial on the Ray 2 is better in my opinion. I don't like the numerals on the Mako. Skx doesn't hack. I can't let that slide.

I have both! I think the Orient looks better and has a better movement but as you said the seiko gets more attention!

I think a good boxing contest would be the Invicta Pro Diver v. Orient Mako. I have both and think its a decision based on what day of the week it is. Seiko SKX is the icon of this price category, even if it is being surpassed in technology, it won't lose its crown unless something special from Seiko challenges it
@konliner92863 жыл бұрын
Do you think mod parts for the SKX can fit for the Ray ? Im thinking of giving Tuna-like shroud for my Ray but its designed for SKX.

I bought the Mako II Pepsi last month and I love it. Bracelet is comfortable and solid and accuracy is good. I have the SKX013 and got a Strapcode bracelet for it instead of the original crappy silicon ugly black band, but I plan to but the SKX007 or The Japanese made SKX011j with the orange dial, a bit expensive but lovely dial...

Great video. Simply done, with just the right shots. Very informative. It may have kept mee from buying the Orient as I already own the the SKX.

Great review. I'm currently deciding on these two watches and I'm leaning towards the skx. For me it just has more of its own identity whereas the Orient just looks too much like any other Subby homage.
