What I found most impressive, even beyond the superbly executed throws was the fact that NONE of them cheered themselves and made a commotion. One or two even helped their opponent up. THAT is judo.

Reminds me of one of the first in-house bjj tourneys I was in. Me and my opponent went into overtime, next point would win, he charged for a savage double-leg takedown, lifted, slammed me down, leapt to his feet and cheered to the heavens. He got points off for the slam and unsportsmanlike conduct. Humble, I got up, dusted myself off, shook his hand and won in more ways than one.

@@Mr.Smiley_J But the sad thing is that BJJ does not teach you to be a better person as does Judo and other arts. I've been practicing for nearly 4 years, got a purple belt and the amount of bad conduct during fights I have been the target of or witnessed is astonishing. This behavior goes all the way to brown and black belts. If you already have the correct mindset about being a decent person while a fighter, I fear practicing BJJ in the long run will demotivate you somehow. Have you considered moving to Judo?

japan is a small, overpopulated island nation. If everyone is overly expressive, it would create an unwanted emotional chaos. So everyone is expected to refrain from bragging, showing off, being arrogant, etc. It's their culture.

I wiped out on my motorcycle twice, and I have no doubt that if I didn't know how to fall from a decade of judo practice, I wouldn't have survived either crash. My black belt in judo is one of my most cherished accomplishments. It's too bad more people don't participate in judo.

μαριος Καπετανοπουλος, believe it or not, when i was flying through the air, I was able to remain calm, I naturally landed on my back with the most surface area possible, and I was able to keep my head off the street. Most untrained people put their arms out to catch themselves, and break their hands, wrists, and/or arms. My core and neck strength kept my head from bouncing off the street. I was still injured, but I know 100% that the way I landed, both times (due to the thousands and thousands of break falls I had practiced through the years) mitigated the damage considerably. The helmet and heavy coat also helped.

thanks for the response, honestly i have heard many times people saying that judo saved them from a similar situation but always sounded weird.Your description of the accident kind of helped me understand the role judo played ,though you were wearing a helmet ,which is to be expected, but I have always wondered how someone could protect his head when falling because these forms of forward rolling I have seen don't seem to work on concrete

μαριος Καπετανοπουλος, what you say is correct. I wouldn't want to go out and do some throws or rolls on concrete voluntarily. But in a high stress situation, with the adrenaline flowing, and you are facing serious injury or death... it's similar, in my opinion, to people who get shot (or whatever) and don't realize it till later. Your senses are so focused. It is nice to know that the training (time invested) came through for me when I needed it, and it has certainly made my love of judo stronger (my love of riding motorcycles, not so much).

i have used my falls, also. and yes... it mitigates a lot of damage even in concrete. it still hurts and you get a bit beaten up, but is way better than just flailing. i fell from my bike face first with my legs locked, so couldnt roll. got my elbows a bit bruised, but kept all my teeth, you know... and the other time i was sprinting and a dog crossed trough my feet, so i rolled and didnt get anything, really. a partner of mine told me he fell down from a staircase, but also broke the fall with his judo, and saved his drunk self that way.

Just beautiful. Some of these throws are works of art. The slightest vulnerability is immediately exploited, usually with grace. Then there is Ono, who seems to have come back even physically stronger after his break, if that is possible. Maybe it's because he often trains above his weight class. In any event, he is simply over-powering.

Judo has been in my family for years, both my sister and brother were State Champions. But he was cutting a tree branch at work when a transformer was hit by lightning. The current went down the power lines and into the tree. My brother was blown 30ft out of that tree, and like a cat, he twisted and forward rolled out of it - shaken, safe and with only a few minor cuts, he thanked his instinctive judo training. 👍

No one can roll out of something that travels at light speed, so I guess that he was either blown away because of the lightning hitting him (though he survived) or the lightning wasn't going to hit him to begin with and some magical force pushed him away of that tree. @Jp Bm it is a refreshing sight, a judoka with such an opinion. As a bjj practitioner with a lot of respect for judo, everytime i hear judo players lament that this "bjj craze" is just marketing and stolen techniques from judo, I can't help but shake my head and think: "is it really stealing when you (well, your governing body) throw it away?". Everytime someone in BJJ comes up with a new(ish) technique there's someone somewhere whining somebody in judo did it first. Which may or may no be true, and is largely irrelevant. The way I see it, if you're not using it (possibly because rules), and you're not teaching it (because most judo clubs only care about olympic rules), well then too bad, people will rightfully go learn it from somebody who does use it and does teach it. Techniques can't be owned anyway.

So much respect to the Judoka. Kano gave us a truly modern martial art, and a great sport, too. When one sees a judoka in mma, you can expect a vocabulary of takedowns beyond the morote gari. Once, Judo got the snub, but now you’re seeing a lot more judo takedowns and ne waza in elite mma. Because it works.

Uchi Mata is my favourite. Never practiced judo but I started using it in freestyle wrestling and BJJ and it catches so many people and leaves a ankle pick right there.

I’m 55 years old. Started judo 16 months ago and got the yellow belt 3 for months now. Starting to learn judo is one the best decision I took in a long time. I’m a surfer/skater since childhood. Judo, at my age, keeps me strong, flexible and it’s great fun.

I'm on my 9th YEAR. The beginning is fun. For a time I was not interested anymore and trained very bad. You train bad till you can perform hip throws quickly, know sacrifice throws and used it succesfully in a fight or randori. It really amazed me and I was impressed by my own skills. It boosted my motivation. Trust me. The beginning is fun. Then it gets boring. But if you keep it up you will get endless fun.
