Good video, the only thing I'll add about blend doors, some are electric and some vacuum operated. The automatic temperature controls use the electric motors and these are the ones that frequently fail in old age. The more basic system (hot/cold dial) is vacuum operated and the problem is usually just a failed hose under the hood, a cheap and easy fix.

I have the tail light issue now. Watched your other video and how to fix it. Much appreciated. I’ve also had to replace the radiator, rotors, brakes and calipers. A new fuel tank skid plate cover because I live in the Midwest. Ball joints upper and lower in the front, replaced the tire rod, replaced the hub assemblies on both front wheels. New battery and new front headlights to get rid of those ugly old headlights. Going to continue working on more steering components and replacing the shocks and the coil springs if needed. Also going to replace the entire rear ball joint assembly sometime soon to keep it running smoothly. I have a 1999 Jeep grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.0 V6. It only has 130,000 miles on it and I expect this jeep to run for a long time! I love this Jeep!

Another common problem with the Jeep WJ is if/when you put a lift on it, there's a possibility of the dreaded "Death Wobble". You know if it happens. There's no mistaking it. Another problem is with the transfer cases on lifted WJ's. I've had every problem mentioned here with mine. Even with all that, I'm still happy with it.

As the original owner of a 2004 Grand Cherokee in this same exterior/interior colors V-8 engined, mine has 187,000 on the original drivetrain. More the accuator motors go bad rather than the blend doors. Tail lights start eating up light bulbs because the brass strips that touch the bulb and that overheats the taillight plastic starts to melt and you get connection issues. Yes, I had t o warranty swap out about 4 right front brake calipers because they began dragging. Open up that driver side door wire boot and add a longer piece of wire to those that have become broken due to constant bending that broke them.

The WJ's with the 4.7s have issues with valve seats. The 4.7 has aluminum heads and steel valve seats and if you overheat it badly the valve seats come loose and possibly cause major damage to the engine. My 01 did this but fortunately it did not do any damage but I had to remove the cylinder heads and have all the valve seats replaced. Rocker arms that pop off also are a problem with the 4.7. Usually happens to engines that don't get serviced properly such as oil changes. Keep the oil clean and you will probably be ok.
@NajarOffroad4 жыл бұрын
That’s good to know! So overall you do recommend a 4.7 as long as you keep up with the maintenance
@bryanthompson43234 жыл бұрын
@@NajarOffroad The 4.0 is a tough motor but the power from the 4.7 is amazing. But it is sensitive to bad maintenance. It sludges up easy if you don't keep up with oil changes and then the oil passages get clogged. I have an 01 WJ 4.7 and I love it. It has the tow package so the axle ratio is 3.73 with a limited slip axle. I've given some muscle cars a run for their money.😁

Yup everything I have Repaired on my 02 limited with the 4.0. Only thing I would add is the leaking oil pan/gasket (at least the 4.0) and in northern salt states like mine not only does the sunroof drains become brittle and need replaced but the edge of the sunroof opening becomes rusty (no real rott any where else) and causes it to leak through the roof (seen it a couple times) so I sanded it and patched it. You will notice bubbles in the paint on the edging when it's open. Then it leaks only with a hard rain down the visor.

I've been pretty darn lucky i guess. My '99 WJ has been trouble-free pretty much. I recently fixed a broken wire in the door rubber boot. But i think that's about it really. One thing i can think of, that was a flaw from the factory, is that the exhaust really needs an extra hanger or two. It only has the one, right at the back, and that's alot of weight put on the muffler connections, with no additional hangers taking the load. Mine just wore out the tailpipe where it meets the muffler at the rear. And from the records of the previous owner, he was replacing the tailpipe often.

Amazing to consider that the Jeep WJ weighs a full 600 pounds lighter than the lightest of the WK Jeep Grand Cherokee product line that ran from 2005 to 2010. That 600 pounds are equivalent to having three grown adult men seated in the WK Jeep at all times, in addition to the driver, as compared to the WJ's curb weight. OH crank case oil. On the Quadras it needs CRANK CASE OIL, don't let someone talk you into putting transmission fluid, that will be the WRONG FLUID, and it will start making a loud clunking sound. You might have to get it from the dealership. You can look online all the steps if you have that situation, I think you have to drain it, there's a process. Some turkey did that to mine. Bottle needs to read CRANK CASE OIL on the bottle.

The turn signal relay soldering cracked and blower relay overheated and melted on mine. Also the outside / inside air regulator flap hinges broke. Apart from these I'm very happy with my old WJ, there's just normal wear and tear.

Haven’t run into all these problems... but the one that caught my attention and I have a question about is how high of a lift did you do to need to change the shaft? My 96 has a 3” lift and to my knowledge nothing else. Have the last bits coming in to do a 2” on my girls 01 GC but if I’m going to have that problem I might not.
@papaschuette2 жыл бұрын
You will be fine with either of those height lifts. I originally installed a 3 inch lift with spring spacers and shocks from Supreme Suspension. No issues at all with the driveshaft. Didn't have any issues with it until I decided that it wasn't high enough for me. So I took out the spacers and switched out the springs to 6 inch longer than stock and longer shocks. I've replaced the driveshaft twice since. Gonna be switching to a double cardan driveshaft real soon.

You should make a video about rusting fenders and how to prevent them.
@christiansulak43094 жыл бұрын
if you have rust sand it and if you need too bondo it up. Then prime and repaint it. to prevent make sure it has no exposed (unpainted) metal and clean them on the inside water mud and salt will build up on the inner side so just keep it clean

Have an 02 overland and the only issues I have had was a engine replacement before 150,000 miles which is not that bad. On the 3rd engine as of last month and still under 200,000 miles. Also I work in an off road/jeep/Toyota shop that also does regular automotive work as well as we specialize in geartrain building and rebuilding. I am a tech of almost 20 years in the field and really this list is not that accurate but close. Still definitely points to issues I see not as often as more of the common issues.

All you people aren't paying attention. Especially the guy who did the video. The ball joints are greasable. The only reason they go bad is cuz you weren't greasing them. I have replaced my brakes, there's a set of rotors you can easily get from Detroit Axle and have them shipped to you. The cost is very nominal as brakes go. But they are wonderful set of brakes. I would opt to get the Wagner pads for them. At least the Thermo quiets. The nice thing about them is that you can get them drilled and slotted for cheaper than you can get them at any Box Store. If you own a 4.7, about a week before you do an oil change, at least once in a while. When your little low on oil. Put a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil into it to keep those lifters operating properly. It's cheap insurance for not having a Rocker come apart inside the valve cover.
