Thanks for bringing this to people's attention. I think the aftermarket crown is mostly thinking of scraping and sliding over rocks, whereas Toyota was also considering high-speed road debris being kicked at the tank by the tires. A good skid plate should protect from both.

Thanks you for the detailed video. I found it most helpful as I begin my search for an aluminum skid plate.

Thanks for making this video. I had never heard about this issue before and it made me decide not to get it and just stick with OEM for now

Great analysis. I had thought the same thing when I started looking into a gas tank skid. Still haven't decided on one. The Rago Fab skid looks like a possibility, though.

This is like complaining the slicks you put on your drag car don’t perform well in the rain. All the skids mentioned are for off-roading and provide much more protection than the factory one for their intended purpose due to the thicker gauge material. I’ve jacked my 4Runner off my RCI skids with no problem. Try that with your factory one. In addition to off-roading I’ve also put thousands of Highway miles on roads with plenty of rocks (ask my windshield how I know) and there just isn’t an issue with rocks hitting the gas tank.

They should make a skid plate that can be installed on top of the OEM one. Would be dead simple.

Good info!

The best solution would be to leave the oem in place and put the new one with it.
