SPOILERS (Just my interpretation of course) First time I watched I thought the mother was crazy, ruling her household with a narcissistic and obsessive compulsive world view that she projects onto her daughter. However, a second look reveals that the mother is just as much a victim as the daughter. A victim of the father’s constant paranoia and psychosis. Their home is filled with disturbing artwork and grotesque Frankenstein taxidermy projects. A sign on the door demanding to keep it locked, and a glance at a page in his journal reveals a paranoia under which he demands everyone in the house live. He’s taught Rachel many things, like throwing a bone in the forest to see where it leads to, picking up dead pieces of hair and flesh in the forest and holding them to her ear to listen. We know she didn’t learn this from her mother who wouldn’t dare go into the woods for fear of mud and dirt. Her father was out of his mind, and clues in the film point to Rachel possessing the same mental illness as her father. She seems to hear and see things that aren’t there, and as the film progresses and the imagery of the millions of bugs crawling gets more and more frenzied, that’s Rachel slowly succumbing to her psychosis. That moment in the woods, staring into the goats dead eye, is the moment her mind left the “in-between” and her inherited insanity rose to the surface. She then goes home and bludgeons her mother, ties her up, vacuum seals her father, and recites a poem about how she found the “in between” in the woods. Even after his death, the father is an ominous presence in the house. The women are afraid of offending him, worried he’s pretending and that he’ll overhear something he doesn’t like and won’t come back. They’re convinced he’s testing them so they must be on their best behavior, doting on him, bringing him gifts and reciting poems and making sure the house is clean to his liking because as the mother says “you know what your father is like”. She is insistent on carrying on as normal and pretending like nothing bad is happening, because that is how she copes, and perhaps how he expects the household to cope. And if she follows his rules, he’ll notice and come back. This film is Intuitive and clever and grim, the imagery is spot on but the symbolism is not overbearing. The actress playing the mother is so fantastic she really makes this story what it is. I’m so impressed. Serious dogtooth vibes!!

This short was brilliant, and I love how it unfolded. There is definitely abuse going on here and my perception is that both the mother and the daughter were abused in this home by the father. I think that there was possibly violence and emotional abuse towards the mother first by her domineering husband and that when she domestically instructs her daughter and slaps her for being out of line, it is so the girl can navigate around her father and avoid more serious violence from him towards her and possibly back to the mother for not doing enough to educate her daughter "right". The mother was probably already broken when her daughter was born and appears to be obsessive compulsive and is clearly uneducated in matters of science, which is kind of funny if the situation was not so serious. The only way to get her to listen was to tape up her mouth, and as we leave her tied up in the chair, she will now be a victim of all the faulty education she has imparted in this years-long tyranny. Couldn't happen shiver a nicer person!

HOLY SHIT @ HOME EDUCATION. been binging horror shorts for some creative inspo for the last 2 hours and this one absolutely blew me away. Writing is so beyond clever and love how it circles back and evolves without feeling redundant. Acting performances are SO, so good and genuinely FUNNY and relevant all at the same time. Wardrobe & HMU are so perfect for characters they are maintained yet still flawed enough to make us feel there with them. The fly montage, ohmygod. The sound design with this in particular was *gorgeous*. Shots are incredible, extra crispy and intelligently stitched together with such wonderfully unflattering lighting in the best way. Excellent job to everyone on this short, I just had to share how much I truly enjoyed this project. Been an Alter fan for years but this one rlly blew me away. The overall message was felt without being forced, and personally something I fixate on in the spoon-fed media age. This team accomplished comments on censorship and mental health in a way that felt actually original and not overexaggerated. We tend to define horror with very graphic, visual imagery; but Home Education really makes you wonder; maybe the scariest thing for us humans is anything unknown/the result of, or in this case, literal lack of knowledge.
