Watching **AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER** for the first time | BOOK 3 - SOZIN'S COMET - IT'S OVER!!

When I was a kid, everyone I knew watched Avatar: The Last Airbender on Nickelodeon. For some reason, I never got into it. To this day, my close friends still talk about the show regularly. With the full show now on Netflix, it seemed as good a time as any to watch it. This episode is me watching and reacting to the final four episodes of Book 3 of ATLA for the first time (aka Sozin's Comet). I am so sad this experience has come to an end but it's perfect timing now that Legend of Kora is coming to Netflix in August.

Ozai "leaving Azula in charge" wasn't actually that. He was manipulating Azula. He wanted all the glory to himself, so he told her to stay behind to defend the homeland.

Yes, when you see the full picture of what Ozai did to become firelord with the info released in the comics, I think it puts him as one of the most despicable and vile characters ever. In a sense, azula was just an image of him, and the same thing she did to long feng in Ba Sing Se her father did to her. That is why I think she has a great potential to be explored in future stories.

Azula was a victim of her father more than anyone else. Even though she later became a horrible person, the beach episode shows she still has a "normal" side that unfortunately could never be brought forward more prominently, maybe her mom could have done it, but we don't know. What is also interesting is that if it was not for his banishment and his life with his uncle, Zuko possibly would have gone the same way as she did, altough with less fighting skills and manipulative prowess. What a diference a good person (Iroh) can make in a youngster life.

Because as soon as he found out about Azula's talent he started to pay attention to her and teach her to be like him. Also, I would've hated it if they decided to focuse more heavily in the romance (be it AangxKatara, ZukoxKatara, other ships), because it just wouldn't have been the same show.

I ship both (but Zutara a little more) but really I'm so glad the show didn't focus too much on romance like so many other shows and focused more about the characters and relationships that weren't necessarily romantic. Honestly I live for romance in shows but in ATLA it doesn't feel like it should take a big place in the plot, I feel like we got exactly the amount of romance that we needed (Sokka and Suki are IN LOVE).

I think that it's a little more than that. For me at least it really shows the bond and the trust they were able to create and how they really do care for each other after everything that happened between them, which is something that I see a lot of people say against zutara but that is one of the things that for me really shows that even though they have spent most of the show going after one another in the little time they had once getting over that they really could form that deep relationship.

I'm a kataang shipper, but i don't mind zutara, all though the reasons why people ship zutara or don't ship kataang are kinda stupid. "he told katara that she's his forever girl" like, what? The episode where he said that was "nightmares and daydreams" the episode where appa and momo were talking and aang was dreaming about him not having pants, how can you take that line seriously? "he saved katara from the lighting" that doesn't necessarily mean he likes her, he's a good friend and he cares for katara. And the whole thing where katara was confused and aang kissed her, they're KIDS there was a war going on, katara at the time didn't know what she wanted, aang knew exactly what he wanted and went for it, was it the right thing to do? No, but he's a kid and you have to understand that, he thought that was the right thing to do at the moment, but after he did it he quickly realized it wasn't, everybody makes mistakes. The writers hinted that aang and katara were gonna be together from the start, i never saw any love interest between katara an zuko, to me they were just good friends. i don't understand how people saw the possibility of katara and zuko to end up together. I respect the people who ship zutara, but imo kataang is better.

The second one is a rare breed of asshole that does things for a girl they like that they consider "nice" and then get super upset if their feelings aren't reciprocated afterwards; they feel as if by doing something nice, they are owed something in return. Generally, negative experiences are shared way more often on internet forums (Reddit, tumblr, lookin' at you two), which results in said negative stereotypes vastly overshadowing regular behavior. So a lot of people are surprisingly eager to jump the gun on confirming their stereotypes at the slightest sign of a possible "niceguy." And that goes for a lot of stereotypes originating on the internet. Now let's pump the brakes here, because aang is not a "niceguy", he's a genuinely nice guy. Aang was clearly in love with Katara in the show. But people downplay Katara’s feelings for Aang. She gets jealous when Aang gets attention from girls (Kyoshi island, “what girl?” the swamp, fire nation girls in the footloose episode, etc) He is the only one she shows an appreciation for with a kiss on the cheek She’s the only one who dares to consistently pull him out of the Avatar state And most importantly, she suggested they kiss and later after their fight INITIATED their kiss in the cave of two lovers. Aang is the protagonist. So we see through his eyes of all of his interest and it appears imbalanced. Especially that ember island players scene. But honestly I think that can be chalked up to her still understanding that they had to defeat the fire lord and now that the war is over she can pursue her feelings. But the feelings were always there and they were never hidden.

Exactly! I feel like people ignore Katara's actual feelings in favor of what they think she should have felt. People also seem to forget the headband episode where Katara gets jealous of Aang dancing with other girls and then when the two do dance together they have a lot of chemistry.

@@SmoovyNovaFan 1. Even that would be slightly inaccurate given Kyoshi island, the end of the fortune teller episode and Aang recovering her necklace. All of those happened in book 1. 2. He grew up. Before midway in book 2, Aang was always deferential when it came to his responsibility as the Avatar. Katara always being confident in him would have to assert that he is the Avatar and that he can help things. That changes by the drill episode when he commands "I'm the Avatar, take me to whoever's in charge." And this is something she outwardly expresses right before the invasion leading up to the kiss so you can't say she didn't notice it. Katara's expression of love for Aang grew out of friendship and care. It came across as motherly at times but it's crazy that people don't see him as her equal and a capable leader. It's not like she doesn't see him that way.

Ryse yea true, Katara never showed any feelings for Aang even once until probably the Cave episode, and even after they made her look like she just saw him as a friend after, all the way until the footloose episode. So without Aang instigating anything we saw a grand total of 2 times that Katara showed any interest in Aang compared to Aang who shows it all the time. And the difference is pretty glaring too considering how the animators keep making her blush whenever she was around Jet or Haru

Like we haven't spent three seasons watching the two of them basically live together, face life and death together, and develop into a real and trusting and loving relationship. Zutara cheapens Katara's arc in so many ways. What's she gonna do if she ends up with the fire lord? Live away from her people, and be a prop to help reshape the fire nation (which is not even close to being her responsibility) is what. Katara wants to help rebuild her tribe, and re-establish waterbending in her homeland. She could wind up with almost any one else but Zuko and be able to do that.

I agree with the first half but being with zuko doesn’t mean she can’t do any of that. The point of ending the war was to rebuild all the nations together, just because katara is with the fire lord doesn’t mean she is forced to rebuild the fire nation. In fact the fire nation would probably be the nation to help all the other nations rebuild themselves since it’s the one that wasn’t damaged by war. And there’s no way for her to re-establish waterbending in the southern water tribe unless she married someone from the southern water tribe. She married Aang so how would that help to re-establish waterbending? So no it really doesn’t break her character

@@dhamin8168 In marrying zuko, Katara would be a royal consort with all the duties and responsibilities that entails. So yes, marrying his DOES limit what she can do. To be a royal consort is to put the nation you married into first. And she did help re-establish waterbending in the south. Even in marrying Aang (they DID have a waterbending baby), though baby making is not just how she did it. We see how in the comics. And any futer bending kids that aren't hers (because she too was born to non-bending parents) will be taught by her because she's right at home, not bound to the fire nation, raising the next fire lord. Aang gives Katara more freedom to rebuild on her own terms compared to that of being with Zuko.

Lets see the Zuko and Katara scenes episode by episode guys. Book 1 1: No interaction 2: Attacks her village and brother and threatens her grandmother 3: None 4: None 5: None 6: None but Zuko finds her necklace 7: None 8: None 9: Blackmails her to get what he wants. Also, first time they ever actually speak to each other. Great Start! 10: None 11: None 12: None. 13: None 14: None 15: Attacks her using her necklace. Also Jun jokes about her being his girlfriend, which some people use as evidence 16: None 17: None 18: None 19 & 20: Epic Fight! Book 2 None at all until final episode. 20: The only vaguely Zutara scene in the series. Considering it had no prior buildup and he immediately betrayed her I'd say it is a fail Book 3 No interaction and then hatred until ep 16 16: Draws out each others worst traits while Zuko eggs her on into taking revenge and enables her violent tendencies. Then they have a friendship hug. Final Summation: Aang and Zuko had more romantic scenes than Zuko and Katara.

Aang doesn't love her? How'd you get that conclusion? lol. He admitted it to Guru Pathik, tried to tell her a couple of times before being interrupted, left his avatar state training because she was in danger with no second thoughts, etc etc. And I think Forever Girl means he has the full intention to marry her; of course it was just his dream state that made it sound overconfident, but that's always how we like to see ourselves. Mydoom.A ATLA 9.5 LoK 6 TDP 7 ATLA is basically perfection, but nothing is really flawless. I honestly love the dragon prince and think it’s criminally underrated. It certainly has its weak points, but I think it’s a worthy successor to avatar. The animation in the first season can be jarring but it’s much better in the following season. I also think the first season starts at around a 6.5 but season 3 ends at an 8 or 9. None of it is bad but it definitely picks up in the last season

Great reaction to a great series. I'ma go over some of your Zutara arguments though. This will be very very long. Probably the longest comment I will EVER write, so forgive me. "There was so much potential." True, I agree with the bottom line but not the explanation. Every moment you claim Zuko and Katara bonded over similar situations, Aang and Katara did as well. They all shared similar pain and as a result they all grew closer together and supported each other. That bond isn't exclusive to Zutara. "Katara would crush it as a Fire Lady." That's debatable and extremely irrelevant, but I personally *hate* the opposites attract argument because it's nothing but a fallacy and it's so surface level. It boils down to "this girl is cute and kind and he's mean and hot. They're perfect." I'm not saying you're saying that, but you see how surface level that is? It's the same. As for the equal partners thing, what's your argument for her not being an equal partner to Aang? What is the context behind this statement? You said you believe Aang would overshadow her in a relationship? In what way? "Zuko got struck by lighting for her." I really wish people wouldn't use arguments like these. To be frank, it's one of the most idiotic arguments I've ever read concerning this topic. I'm not calling you an idiot, it's just not a good argument at all, because it takes a FACT and ASSUMES a lot about certain characters in other situations. Of course he got struck for her. Zuko and Katara were the only ones there. The only ones in this situation. No other ally in sight. Zuko wasn't just going to watch her get shot with lightning, come on now. Do you believe Aang would just stand there and watch her get shot? Do you believe Zuko would just stand there and watch Sokka or Toph get shot? If your answer to either of those questions is "yes", then this series flew over your head. I came off a little harsher on this one than I intended. I'm sorry, but this argument ain't it. "The catacombs scene is the most intimate in the whole show." Debatable. I won't disagree with this though. There are plenty of kisses in the series, but there's something deeper when there's no talking, no kissing. So to each their own. "To some extent, Katara would always be in Aang's shadow." Again, in what way? Because he's the Avatar? Out of all things that needed an explanation, this is the main one. Because each character apart of Team Avatar played a part in ending the war. Katara challenged the customs of the Northern Water Tribe and inspired change, just as Aang did, just as Zuko did. You're basing this argument off of a future you know nothing about and what we DO know about them doesn't support your argument at all. Katara grew right alongside Aang. She wasn't left behind at all, so, I'm seriously wondering to what "extent" you're referring to. Aang wouldn't have gotten so far without Katara by his side and he knows that. To me, it sounds like you're forcing Katara down on purpose. Plus it's a blatant contradiction. Zuko's the Fire Lord with a huge responsibility of not only rebuilding the Fire Nation, but also rebuilding their reputation around the rest of the world. Would Katara not be in Zuko's shadow as well? You think too little of her impact if you think she'd be overshadowed by Aang. "Baby you're my forever girl." Issa joke in an episode full of jokes. It's not meant to be a serious representation of Aang's feelings for Katara. He also imagined Ozai stealing his pants. You took it too seriously. Avatar is a series that knows how to make fun of itself some times. Ember Island Players is a perfect example of that. They took all the things that people often commented about the show, and rolled with it. Jet's ambiguous death, Kataang's sibling relationship, Zutara's romantic one, Toph and Tough, it's what they do. But on a more narrative note, Aang is a goofy kid who says and does all the wrong things when it comes to love. You've seen this for yourself. I don't see how this one line is a deal breaker. It's perfectly natural for a kid to throw out some corny, cheesy line to the one they have genuine affection for. *They're kids* at the end of the day, that's the point. He's 13 at most. Let him live. But on that same note, did you forget he also was very mature in conveying his feelings for Katara after seeing the baby Hope born near Ba Sing Se? "That's not a relationship." The war was happening. That was her only reason. There was a clear attraction between them for the entirety of the show, but she was just confused because she knew they had other responsibilities. She knew that they didn't have the luxury of *just* being kids who like each other. But the war is over and they're able to relax. They can breathe a breath of fresh air and a weight is lifted off their shoulders and they both feel it. Talking is always encouraged in a relationship obviously, but sometimes, words can be overrated. You just know when there are times for words and where there are times for action. Nothing needed to be said between them because they both felt the same way. "Aang isn't in love with her. He's in love with the idea of her." Says who? What is this idea that Aang was so in love with and how was it a flawed perception of her? Because when you say he's in love with the idea of Katara, it implies that he had her pegged wrong. It implies that he put her on this pedestal where she could do no wrong in his head, and that's not the case, whatsoever. That she was nothing like what he thought she was. So I ask again, what was Aang's idea of Katara and how does it differ from who she really is or who she became in the end? Aang has been nothing but understanding of Katara from start to finish. A better argument you could've used was that Aang was more *in love with the feeling* than in love with Katara because he was so anxious to be with her that he inadvertently pressured her for an answer in Ember Island Players, and that was a one time thing. Still, that would've been a FAR better argument. Neither Zutara or Kataang was the best written relationship, but Kataang was better because it showed their relationship grow organically in multiple different ways. They're kids, and they've looked to multiple places to confirm their affection as any kid would. Fortune telling, love stories, etc. There were cringe moments but moments of genuine growth and affection. That's the beauty in their relationship. Zutara is more of a wish fulfillment ship because of a few key moments that stood out where you can say "oooh some tension there". It could work, but Kataang flowed far better.

I am gonna stand for Zuko and Mai, There relationship was more than you describe it to be, yes they can be cringe kissing multiple times but that's how it justify how much they're love is for one another. You see it first in the 'beach' episode of how they are with one another constantly jumping back and forth with their differences, Mai being reserved and Zuko being hasty but in the end setting it all aside knowing they needed each other to confine with. And in what I feel is one of the most important episodes for their relationship was the boiling rock part 2, after Zuko without thought breaks up with Mai without any confrontation other than a letter crushes her and she goes to find him in a prison only for him to hurt her further by choosing the escape plan over her. Follow through her ultimate devotion to him by sacrificing her life to save his and by going against Azula. Zuko seeing that showed him her love for him was till death, having said i believe he always did love and care for her but had to carry out the greater good for the world with Aang. Mai even faced Azula shutting her down by telling her with her fear for her was no more and was ready for one last stand all for the sake of loving Zuko more than death by Azula. When you are willing to die for someone that is real love.

Why don't people like sweet wholesome relationships based on friendship that actually works 😂😕 Seems like everyone thinks a bad boy turned good ending up with a girl who hated him is the only relationship that can flourish or become the best. I get that it works for a lot of stories but I think a healthy relationship founded on friendship is a pretty good choice too. Second, Kataang was focused on plenty she just didn't like it and that's fine. She probably preferred Zutara because the most intense focus was given to them on some of the best episodes, as considered amongst the fandom. Idk, I'm not against the zutara ship but it would've been weird. His family basically colonized her village and he spent the majority of the show trying to capture them, and who knows what would have happened to Katara after that. It also would go against his character arc. It would make his evolution the very cliche "I want to be a better person for the girl I love" rather than his own journey of self-discovery. I don’t know, watching this show as an adult today, Katara was always more of a mother figure, or at least something like a babysitter, so for Aang to have a crush is normal, but I don’t see her caring more about him than a family member. Zuko and Katara on the other hand actively overcame many obstacles to reach a point where they deeply trusted and cared for each other. I’m not saying they have to end up together, but it feels like their relationship took more effort so Aang and Katara felt less earned.

She’s a motherly figure to everyone in the group, she was shaped that way because of the death of her mother. Those are her qualities, she is very caring and motherly indeed, to Toph, Sokka, Aang and maybe even Zuko (we didn’t get to see much of a group bond with Zuko due to the timing of him joining the Gaang). So seeing Aang and Katara’s relationship as a family bonding rather than a relationship wouldn’t work, that’s her personality not just something exclusive to her and Aang. Also, I feel like Zuko wouldn’t fit with someone very motherly and caring, since imo it would clash with the way he is. His character is very direct and we didn’t really get to see Katara and Zuko experiencing their relationship for the better, other than really good friends. It really feels like Zuko and Katara are very good friends, like you mentioned, they trust each other, show compassion, though they don’t seem to really share any interests. Edit: Also you mentioned Katara and Aang not earning their relationship, which doesn’t make sense to me seeing how both Aang and Zuko came to know her differently. Aang knew her as a companion since the start, which is why didn’t have to build up trust or anything. Zuko on the other hand literally chased her and Aang down, then broke her trust, then earned her trust again. I feel like that relationship wouldn’t happen so naturally as opposed to Aang and her, which happens more in real life as well (friends to lovers).

@@carlaweitzel4442 By many obstacles you're talking about one episode, and it was because zuko understands that taking revenge is sometimes necessary for closure and katara was out for blood at the time. In the end they learned to respect each other. Zuko, because he realized that kataras mercy is its own from of strength( which he didn't know btw since his own father called mercy a weakness his whole life and burned him for choosing submission over fighting him in the agni kai). Even zhao commented on zukos hesitation in battle, he called it disgraceful. Katara started to respect zuko because he actively showed her that he wanted to be her friend, going out of his way to patch things up between them and earn back her trust. Which is a big deal, it shows exactly what kind of person zuko is and katara can see how honorable he is. Him supporting her in her quest, regardless it was a bad idea or not was important in showing katara that.This way she finally saw zuko wasn't like the other firebenders and could distinguish between him and her hatred for the man who killed her mother. But I really don't see them be anything more than friends. They're more like two teenagers in a group therapy session, trying to heal and making mistakes on the way but they have each other to fall back on, which I do think could blossom into something more eventually but if zuko wasnt the firelord.

To be fair, this is a show you have to watch multiple times for you to grasp some things better. There's too much detail you can't possibly notice it all. For example, Mai and Ty Lee's betrayal has been foreshadowed since mid season 2. I can totally get how you prefer Zutara, but I have to go with Kataang. It feels like a reward for sticking through so much. We were hinted both Aang and Katara grew feelings for each other ever since the end of season 1. (Aang actually since the very first episode). Also the Cave of Two Lovers kiss scene is so sweet and kind I don't know how you didn't think of that at the end. The "baby you're my forever girl" is supposed to be cringe, he was hallucinating after all. I feel like the reason why you like the Crystal Catacombs scene so much is because it's the first time Zuko is both vulnerable and honest with himself and the audience. I commented my thoughts on his emotional and mental health on your Book 2 video but I don't you think you read it lol so yeah Also, I feel like I have to point out, yes, Aang not killing Ozai is a great way to end things. It's Aang's way of saying that he won't let go of his roots and still be capable of making a difference. The world was torn after 101 years of war, and balance is more literal than a concept. People in AtLA live their mentalities through bending if you thing about it. Earthbenders have the best defense (ummm Ba Sing Se's Great Wall is the best example I can think of) and they are stubborn and grounded (pun intended). What I mean with this is that the lack of Air nomad beliefs in this world affected everyone. There's no mercy, there's no avoiding, there's no inner peace within anyone. Aang is basically saying to Ozai that he was defeated by the morals of those he considered weak, and didn't deserve to live in "his" world. It's saying that the world without the influence of the air nomads is incomplete, unbalanced and hurt. I would like to point out many other things, but it's too much lol . The only thing that I feel like I HAVE to say is that I'm sad you didn't include that scene of Sokka saying "it looks like this is the end, Toph" and shows Toph crying. That gives me the feels every time. Just 2 teenagers who are realizing they are about to die and there's nothing they could do about it.

FBI-AGENT you can kinda tell bc Ty Lee was never interested in joining Azula, she did it out of fear (cuz Azula kept making her circus life dangerous). You can also see in Zuko’s flashback that Azula made fun of/embarrassed Mai cuz of her crush. She also pushes Ty Lee over when she fails to do the cartwheel. With all of this, you can infer that they probably don’t actually deeply care about Azula, so Mai’s betrayal finally gave Ty Lee the courage to side with the nicer friend and go against Azula. At least, this is how I saw it.

Aang didn't actually say "Baby you're my forever girl" to Katara, he was tripping in that scene, it was in his head. I do agree with you being disappointed that we did not see a proper conversation between the two of them about their relationship. They were always kinda beating around the bush with it, and Aang kissing her when she said "this isn't the right time, I'm confused" was definitely a bad move imo. And I think there could have been a few more scenes to show that Katara felt similarly about Aang, especially in Book 3 where it sometimes feels Aang's love is one sided. I have similar issues with the other relationships, mostly SokkaxSuki and ZukoxMai, cause they don't seem to dedicate enough screentime to them actually falling in love and having a proper conversation about it. However these are just kids/teenagers, and most of them are quite traumatized and don't open up easily, so I don't blame them entirely for not talking too much about their romantic feelings for each other. They do of course need to address that at some point, but I guess we'll have to hope that they eventually talked about it offscreen. (Also on a side, I think it's likely that Toph had an unrequited crush on Sokka, but she never spoke up about it either. These poor kids don't know how to talk about their feelings, god bless them).

I used to be a Zutara shipper when the show came out, but the more I think about it, esp, as an adult, the more it does't work. People say that Katara and Zuko are the yin and yang of this show, fire/water, prince/commoner. However, I'd argue AANG and Zuko are actually the opposites of the show. They have several episodes where their storylines literally parallel each other and goes much deeper than the surface-level differences that Zutara share. Zuko would have jumped in front of lighting for anyone on team avatar. The reason it was Katara is because, why not bring the most powerful bender you know besides Aang (who's busy), to fight Azula, a person Zuko has never been able to beat. Also, I've played enough pokemon to know Katara had the best odds of beating Azula out of the gaang. The catacombs scene was the most intimate? Please refer to the Cave of Two Lovers and Kataang's dance from The Headband or Katara's "Ride or Die for Aang" speech she gave TO Zuko. Now I'm not saying the catacombs scene wasn't intimate. The skinship did make my heart flutter a bit (maybe cause I was projecting, idk), but I feel like people only see this scene as a Zutara scene when there's actually more important stuff going on here. 2 things are happening: It further propels Zuko's character arc. Once again Zuko is told what the war was like from the perspective of someone who isn't from the fire nation. Gives us a glimpse of what Zuko would be like on team avatar, only for Azula to make him relapse, which he later regrets, motivating him to join the Avatar. And second, foreshadowing. Here the audience is reminded that Katara has water from the spirit oasis. And it's foreshadowed that the item will become important later on. Without this scene, Katara taking out the water and using it on Aang at the end of the episode would feel like a cheap trick if the audience didn't remember she had it. I also think about "what if" Katara used the water on Zuko's scar... Aang would still get hit by Azula's lighting and die. And since theres no spirit oasis water left, The End. Because the story is about Aang. Without Aang, there's no story. One of my biggest qualms with Zutara is from the The Southern Raiders episode. It shows just how toxic their relationship can be, even if they don't intend it to be. Sure, Zuko was trying to help Katara, but his main goal was to get Katara to accept him into the group, because he was having a hard time adjusting without her support. And although he had good intentions, he was enabling her behavior in a negative way. Zuko even realizes this when she starts bloodbending. And honestly, if she had gone through with it, I would have come to hate her. And I agree, I did not like it when Aang kissed her after saying she was confused. I wish they elaborated more on why she felt that way. And I wasn't on board the Kataang ship immediately. But one of the things I love most about Kataang, is how playful Aang is. By the end, Aang has accepted his responsibilities and matured but has still been able to keep his upbeat attitude. It balances out Katara's strict "mom" personality (which btw, she's act like a mom to everyone, not just aang). In the very first episode when Katara and Aang go penguin sliding, Katara says it reminded her of "what it was like to be a kid". And Aang, tells her she "still is a kid". Aang brings out a side of Katara that she hasn't expressed in a long time; since the passing of her mom. And I think that's so endearing.

Now Imma be honest. I hate Zutara with a passion. I believe this came about because people are so inherently uncomfortable with an older woman and younger man scenario. Aang and Katara had so many good ship moments starting from when they first met. Zutara only has the catacomb scene, and after that the writers dispelled any questions of Zutara with the “Ember Island Players.” Also Zutara perpetuates that women should one always be shorter than a man, and two always go with the man that treats you horribly at first. Just take a breath and let it go. Think of it from the story standpoint. Zuko and Katara were enemies for almost all of the show and she hated his guts until the two episodes before the finale. Like do they look cute together? Yes. Is it logical for them to be together? Meh. And that's me as a zutara shipper back in the day. Don't let your shipper side rob you of a wonderful experience.

The who Zutara thing is a bit weird because in the cave you could see that Katatra could fall for Zuko but Zuko emotionally aligns with Mai better anyways. Okay, why you could argue that's true after Zuko joins the GAang and she threated to kill him if he stepped out of line, Zuko has never tried to kill any of them. And after they make up they are on good terms. (Zuko was even willing to die to protect Katara) 2. "Despised each other" a. Feel like that's the same as the first argument but reworded but eh, okay. Yeah they DID. Not presently though, they banter in the ember Island players, Katara made light teasing jokes about (Ozai) Zuko's baby picture. Comfort each other (I.E Southern raiders, Zuko outside Iroh's tent, When they are about to face Azula) 3. "Never loved each other" a. I'm going back to the final Agni Kai here. Zuko jumped in front of comet powered lighting, only having one experience redirecting lighting, and this time, not even the correct form. Mind you, lighting travels 270,000 mph (Humanly possible no one could actually move fast enough but this is a cartoon! lol), He wouldn't even have time to think about jumping in front of the lighting, his body just did. Not caring about the consequences (like death). In simple terms: Zuko at that moment = protect Katara. And, whether you want to frame that as romantic or platonic love-it's love. 4. "0 kisses" a. A number of kisses means nothing. You don't need to kiss to prove you care or "love" someone (no kisses is better that two non con kisses) Kataang Chemistry: 1. "Literally loved her" a. Yes, Aang did, but throughout the show HER feelings are kept ambiguous/ never shows romantic interest 2. "Kissed her three times" a. Yep! And each time it was without consent! One time, even seconds after she said she was confused 😊(and he never apologized for that) 3. "She cried when he died" a. She also cried tears of joy when Zuko got struck with lighting 4. "She loved him" a. Yes, Katara did love him, but her feelings are never painted as romantic love, minus a few inconsistent moments that reset the next ep. 5. "Aang chose her over the avatar state that could save his life" a. Not sure what you mean 'save his life', but he chose a girl over saving the whole world..i don't think Katara would have found that to be romantic. 6. "Zutara: Brother and sister vibes" a. Ironic because that's basically how Katara and Aang's relationship was throughout the whole show. Okay, Sokka is Katara's OLDER brother and yet, she still acts motherly towards him, he even admitted that he only sees Katara when he tries to think of his mom's face. Zuko however is never mothered by her and another example of how ZK's relationship wasn't bro/sis vibes is when Zuko jumps in front of the lighting. The act itself doesn't have to be considered romantic (he would have done it for anyone) but the framing tells a different story. It has the cliché "no!" It's slow, dramatic, We get a zoom in on Katara's face as she speechless. We get each of the pov, reaching out to each other. Now imagine that exact framing with Sokka's face...a little weird right? That's because it was purposely framed as romantic.

I’m team Kataang all the way! I can see the reasons for how Zuko and Katara would make a good couple, but... 1. Aang and Katara have been together since the very first episode. They’ve had so much time to bond between then and now. Yes, Zuko has technically been around since the first episode as well, but he was always chasing them. There was no “moment” for Katara and Zuko to get to know each other until the finale of Book 2, then they didn’t see each other again until he showed up after the invasion failed. Not enough time in my opinion for the 2 of them to develop feelings. 2. You can’t hold the “Baby, you’re my forever girl” comment against Aang because it never really happened. He was just daydreaming it. He was sleep-deprived and people are loopy when they’re sleep-deprived. 3. It would have been seriously f*çked up if Zuko had kicked Mai to the curb after she turned against Azula and saved his butt! I would have been so disgusted with him. Mai proved her love to Zuko. Furthermore, she’s a badass and I find her angsty, apathetic attitude to be hilarious because Zuko was the same way for most of the series! They’re 2 peas in a pod! And deep down I think Mai does care, but she’s misunderstood because people don’t understand her home life. 4. You made the point that Katara should have chosen Zuko because she would always be in Aang’s shadow. Why? Because he’s the Avatar? Wouldn’t anyone be in Aang’s shadow then? So are you saying that Aang doesn’t deserve love and should just be single his whole life?

Maybe because I’m personally biased and I see myself in Aang but come on. I think Kataang is a better ship and has a better foundation at least than Zutara. Zuko betrayed them, that betrayal nearly cost Aang his life and Katara blamed herself for it. She has for 3 seasons projected her suffering with her mom’s loss onto Zuko and that gets healed barely in time for them to be good teammates in the finale. It’s not that the ship couldn’t work at all it’d just be too jarring for it to happen.

Great video. I was kinda rooting for Zatara too the 1st time watching the show when it was 1st on but I was wrong. And I completely disagree with ur list of reasons for it. Aang never said "Baby you're my forever girl" He was dreaming. And Aang was in love with her since book 1, so then ending up together wasn't out of no where, their attraction to each other was peppered thru all 3 books. Katara caught feels after Aunt Wu told her she'll marry a powerful bender. And they had a great intimate moment and kiss in the secret tunnel.And they had another talk on the day of the eclipse and he kissed her and flew away like a boss. Aang was in love with Katara, not the idea of her. Falling in love with an idea of someone happens with people that don't really know each other or haven't spent any time together. They literally lived together 24/7 for months or a year. They ate, travelled, fought countless battles together and saved each other's lives. Katara and Zuko on the other hand on had that one scene and the last 4 episodes. And she would be in Zuko shadow too bc he was the Fire Lord. Also Aang would have took a lightening hit for her too, easily. Plus Zuko would have done the same for any one on the Aang gang and Iroh. It wasn't some major act of romantic love. However Mai risking her life for Zuko by betraying Azula was a major act of love. And thats when Zutara was annihilated for me and I happily joined team Mai. Everybody ended up with who they should be with at the end of this story. If Zuko and Katara got together at the end it of been weird and awkward af. How would Aang and Zuko be friends? Aang wasn't jealous at all about Jet flirting with Katara but Zuko was his boy and kinda family. For Zatara to have happen alot of things would have to be rewritten for it not to mess up the good vibes of the ending. Plus I think Zutara is kinda shallow bc people just want Katara with the hot bad boy and not goofy monk boy.

Not sure how or why people are getting riled up about a preferential pairing of two cartoon characters. Everyone needs to calm down. It was always clear that Katara and Aang were going to end up together. The show was building up to that for seasons. That being said, I can see how Zutara could have been an interesting what if. I do not see any actual romance displayed in the show, but given their personalities, it would be interesting to see how that relationship could have developed.

I can see the appeal in Zurara, but personally it leaves me completely cold. Probably because I'm 38 years old, I've seen the "opposites attract" ship being played out a million times already (heck, I've had ships like that myself) and coming into this show less than two years ago, I'm probably just done with it. And that's likely why I appreciate the ZukoxMai ship so much more and respect the show for not going in the predictable route - even with Aang's clear affections in the equation. It's just that Maiko feels "real." Like real people in a real relationship with real relationship problems shared amongst two people who likely would gravitate toward one another due to having somewhat similar personalities. I mean, sure the argument that opposites attract being a balancing force is true, but the flipside is also that they generate conflict. How many people really want to be in such a relationship over being with someone who at least has some personality traits you can relate to that haven't been generated under unusual high-stress situations? I wouldn't. And that's just it: Zutara feels scripted, a dramatised ship that feels like a screenwriter has come up with it to give excitement and conflict into a story. And it's frankly cliché. At this point in my life, personally, it's refreshing to see something natural for once and that's me agreeing that Kataang is cute and wholesome and I don't have strong feelings for it one way or the other. Man, didn't expect to write this much about shipping today, but since it was pushed in my face now... Oh, and I'm surprised people expect Aang to kill Ozai. Character-wise it'd go completely against his moral code, but from a practical standpoint, the series age rating wouldn't have allowed him to just decapitate the Fire Lord in a gruesome manner. This isn't Korra, after all. You think Nickelodeon would have just pulled that to their age demographic? No way. I mean, did Jet just die? T'was really unclear.

Yeah, Zutara can be very sweet in the right hands which is why it was felt to have great potential by many (including me). Kataang was more explored in show, and well at that, which makes me really enjoy their relationship but part of why it isn't as popular is because it's canon. Fanworks is used a lot of the times for wish fulfillment and narrative gap closures.

Now that it's over... just rewatch the show lmao. You'll pick up on details you didn't notice before! Ozai left Azula as "fire lord" but it's kind of just a title with no meaning at that point. He's the king of everything, he just wanted her to get off his back because she was no longer useful. Watching her at the end for me is hard because she'd lost everything: her mind, the throne, and any concept of family. Her fight was for nothing because her father never cared about her anyway. A lot of people are suggesting to read the comics, and you should totally read The Search if nothing else so you can find out about Zuko's mom. But you know what I liked even better... The Rise of Kyoshi. She is *iconique*. I'm gonna let everyone else argue about the shipping in this show lol. Everyone sees relationships through their own lens and it's hard to convince them to see it otherwise. So long as you don't hate on Aang, I'm fine with it. Personally though, I'd prefer to be with someone who's fun and enthusiastic rather than serious and brooding. It's what Katara argued for anyway in the first 2 episodes of the show.

But I watched a video essay on Azula's psychology (youtube user Hello Future Me) and it just made it more apparent why it's actually sad. In general as I got older, I just really feel sorry for children who have bad parents and whatever consequences that brings. And the head writer on Avatar wanted to give her a redemption arc anyway, so imagine that.
