Balto is partially based on a true story. While it is true that there was a diphtheria outbreak in Alaska in 1925, and bad weather prevented the medicine from being brought in by ship or plane, there were in fact multiple sled dog teams that relayed the medicine from the rail line to the town.

Sepalla loved his wolf-dog, Togo, so much. Years after the event, he made it his life to train other dogs. When Togo died, Sepalla was by his side. What did Balto’s owner do-the guy who got more fame than anyone just because he was the last one, and he didn’t try to share the spotlight like he should-he sold Balto to the circus, where he was abused and eventually died. How people treat their pets tell you a lot about the person. Togo’s was there until the end. Balto’s sold him (not because he had to, with all the fame and cash he got).

whenever i see "based on/inspired by a true story" in a movie, i always take it with a massive grain of salt, because it covers a very broad scale and the movie can either be toward the "almost totally accurate" end of the scale, or the "only a few things were accurate" side of the scale, and unfortunately with this movie it's the latter. as others have stated, the general story--as in the historic event of the illness in nome--is true, and a dog named balto did exist and did help bring the medicine to the town, but that's about it. they really flexed their creative license for the rest of the movie lmao! however, even though balto wasn't the only hero, he still was one as well! he deserves the credit he got! (the other sled dogs and mushers deserved the same amount of credit obviously, and it's a shame they didn't get it, but that doesn't mean balto is less worthy than togo or the rest of them.) balto and togo and all the other dogs are equally worthy of the hero title in my eyes, and that's how it should be for everyone. anyway, this movie was a huge part of my childhood! i've always loved it so much, and i'm psyched you reacted to it, and i'm glad you enjoyed it! the score is absolutely beautiful, i still listen to it from time to time. definitely a classic! thanks for the reaction :D

Hey Nick! In case it wasn't clear in the scene, the Wolf he faces is _himself._ :) It's the side that he's been suppressing and running from his entire life, appearing to him at his lowest moment. It's only when he accepts his Wolf heritage, that he is he able to complete the impossible journey. Boris points out something early on that Balto doesn't realize about himself: he can withstand damage and situations that a mere dog normally couldn't, is a natural leader who cares for his pack, and has instincts and mannerisms that the others don't possess that save his life on a number of occasions. It's all subtly foreshadowing the moment Balto finally accepts himself. ❤ This info is from the movie's official interview/commentary. In the non-canon sequels produced by a completely different team and studio (which I do not recommend), they try to explain this away as the wolf actually being his mother somehow(?) but again, that isn't actually canon.

The story of the serum run to save Nome is an incredible story, honestly, where the true story is almost as unbelievable as a movie :P There was actually a diphtheria outbreak in Nome and it really was up to the amazing mushers and their dog teams who made up a huge relay to get the medicine to Nome. Balto is the most well known (or was for a long time) because he was one of the lead dogs for the final leg of the relay into Nome. I saw that you're going to watch Togo which is awesome cause it's more historicaly accurate that the cartoon. The route that they ran with the serum is the basis for the Iditarod dog sled race too. I also heard that the antitoxin needed to get to nome under 9 days (or something like that, not very long) otherwise it would lose it's potency/wouldn't work anymore. So the teams, as well as going through some of the roughest terrain in one of the coldest winters, also ran it faster than it had ever been run before.
@gloriajblanco7752 жыл бұрын
If you ask about the true story they will tell you Balto wasn't the actual hero, he merely did the last part of the journy and delivered the medicine to its destination. They will tell you a dog named Togo was the real hero, since he did the longest and most treacherous part of the run and the most sacrifice. This is not true either. The race was the group effort of 20 teams, making It 150 dogs and their mushers. All of them risked their lives for the cause. One of the lead dogs died on the trail and the musher took Its place, pulling the sled with the rest of the team. Another one had the sled stuck on Ice and the musher had to dig It out, burning his hands on the atempt. The character from this movie has Balto's name but is designed after Togo. He represents all of them. This movie may not be accurate but if It wasnt for It the whole event would'a been forgoten.

In the scene where Balto meets the white wolf, The white wolf is actually his mother Aniue. In this film adaption balto is a wolf dog, the hybrid of a wolf and a dog. His father was a purebred husky while his mother was a white wolf. And what transpires in the scene is his mother encouraging him to finally except his heritage as a wolf as well as his heritage as a dog. Once he finally except that he is both a wolf and a dog, he starts to have more confidence in himself. And with that confidence it helped him to get home to see Rosie as well as the other children. I would really love to see you react to it sequels. As I said before they may not be as popular as this film but they are lovable. They are Balto 2 wolf’s quest and Balto 3 wings of change. 🐺

If anyone wants to know more about the Nome Serum Run I highly recommend the book 'The Cruellest Miles' by Gay Salisbury and Laney Salisbury. It's a well researched non fiction book about the event but reads almost like an adventure novel because of just how insane and high stakes the situation was. If you're more interested in visual media a few years back Disney released 'Togo' which is another film based around a different lead dog on the relay. I've not seen it myself so can't say anything about whether or not it is accurate or enjoyable watch though. 'Balto' is a great watch but not very accurate aside from the name of the lead dog that ran the last leg of the relay and the fact the medicine for diphtheria was needed and had to be delivered by sled dogs. Just to give a bit more information the entire sled relay was 674 miles over 127 hours 30 minutes. All this in an insane blizzard. It's really just an incredible story.

I loved the first Balto film as a kid and still do as an adult, the cast and crew did a fantastic job on that masterpiece, i especially loved that Balto was voiced by Kevin Bacon in the first film! As for the 2nd and 3rd Balto films well they may not be as good as the first one, but they are fun to watch.

I have a confession to make. My family, and I first saw Balto around when it first came out in theaters back in 1995. We went to one of the local movie theaters to see it. When we saw that there was live-action footage, we believed that we were in the wrong theater, even though the theater specifically said Balto. After trying out other theater sections of the theater, we went back in, and found the film to be animated. So yeah, definitely was a shock to see that this film changed from live-action to animation. I love this film too because of the score, the story, and the likable characters. Sure, there may be inaccuracies like in Pocahontas, but at least the film is still really good regardless, you know?

Nick, have you ever watched Ladyhawke? I think it would be a great react if you haven't seen yet. The movie is just incredible, my favorite movie by far. It remembers me of my parents, that loved it. Unfortunally they're not with us anymore, but I always watch the movie when I want to remember how their love resisted all difficulties they had through their lives.

I'm surprised Phil Collins voices the polar bears. Just imagine them singing his songs.

I love this movie. I am glad you decided to watch it, and yes, the score is beautiful, specially Heritage of the Wolf (the one that plays when Balto howls with his mother, yeah, it is his mother Aniu) and the part where you realize the kid are gonna die is trutly heartbreaking, I couldn't help to also shed some tears when you did, this movie is my childhood and revisiting it again was great, thanks Nick!

Sometimes when it comes to tragic things (especially tragic things that haven't happened yet and there is still hope), the anxiety I get actually prevents tears in me lol. That being said, it does depend on how a movie does things too, what order I watch them etc (I have VERY contrasting reactions between, for example, the Korean vs. Turkish versions of Miracle in Cell No. 7). That being said, with Balto here, this movie did bring some tears out of me (just saw this reaction), namely when Balto interacts with the white wolf and also at the end when she gives thanks to Balto. So I guess they could be called "beauty- and/or appreciation-tears"! I am pretty sure (but not 100% sure) I saw this full movie when I was much younger, but if I did, the ONLY parts I really remembered was that part with the white wolf and one of the scenes when they zoomed out from the sick little girl. Those two scenes had stayed with me. So yes, I am pretty darn sure I'd seen this so long ago. I am not surprised regarding my remembering the wolf... I've always had an intense respect / attraction for wolves. Also I took a random "spirit animal" quiz once, and it popped up with "wolf". I actually was not expecting that but laughed like crazy when I saw, since it's so true for me :P

I've no idea if its confirmed or not but I've read that the White Wolf is supposed to be Baltos mother. Again, no idea if its true for this movie.

Love this movie and it’s soundtrack. James Horner was (and still is) one of my favorite composers of all time. All of his music had such heart. Not many composers seem capable of accomplishing that type of emotion. I was devastated by his tragic passing. He was truly a legend.

This is one of my favorite childhood movies. James Horner had an amazing score for the film. Kevin Bacon's performance as Balto was great. Bob Hoskins as Boris too.

a movie based on a true story you HAVE to watch... is Hachiko; a dog's tale A movie made in 2009, it made me cry so hard each time I watched it, such a sad story
@sathvamp18 ай бұрын
Oh gosh, you probably saw it already BUT Nick did indeed react to (well maybe a different version) "Hachi- a dog's tale" more recently- go see, if you haven't already :) I saw his reaction to it (and that's also the first time I'd seen much of that movie too), and I indeed cried hard. I was surprised I hadn't cried harder upon my first-time viewing, but later that night I got my answer: Apparently it was because I had been semi-subconsciously repressing the "painful thoughts"; mentally pushing them away whenever I started to really think about it. I've learned a few years ago it can be both unhealthy and extra painful to repress or suppress emotions too much, so once I noticed I was doing that, I made an effort to let myself think about them, and cried HARD, hard hard. And hard the next 5-6 reactions I watched to it, too.

Hello Nick! Thank you for reviewing Balto! It is one of my all time favorites :) and I'm looking forward to Lady and the Tramp (another great movie). While on the subject of dogs, another great dog movie with a great score and story is the movie "Shiloh." A story about a boy doing everything he can to save a beagle from his abusive owner. Truly a heartfelt wholesome movie that I know you will love. Please and thank you!

There's a couple of sequels to this movie. Balto 2 talks about him and Jenna...and their pups! And Balto 3 is about seeing which one is faster: dog sled teams or airplanes.

Thank you for reacting to this little gem I always enjoy your reactions As others have said there really was an outbreak of diphtheria amongst the children of Nome Alaska And teams of dogsleds had to bring the antitoxin (which is a little different from a “vaccine”) A little over 500 miles or so. Balto got most of the credit because he happened to be the lead dog on the team that brought the antitoxin actually into the town of Nome. I think all of the dogs and mushers deserve credit. but as others have also said Leonard Seppala And his team lead by his lead dog Togo
@michellelamar89652 жыл бұрын
Togo actually ran the longest by far and most dangerous part of the journey and their story is well worth celebrating too. On Disney+ there’s a great movie called “Togo” made a year or two ago That tells the story of the amazing bond of Seppala and Togo. Also if you’re really interested and you’re a reader a book called the cruelest miles till the entire story of “the great race of mercy” in it’s entirety

Balto 1995 is one of the most beautiful , heart touching animated films of all time. It's a shame its so underrated, perhaps because it wasn't a Disney production , but i think this movie deserves more credit and praise than it gets. For being a film made pre 2000's era its one of the best movies to watch during a cold winter night in . There's humor , there's drama , suspense , a tale of greed and lies , and perseverance of embracing one's true self worth even if it's deemed a certain way by others. Truly spectacular , Bravo!

•Balto in the film is what is known as a "wolf-dog," a hybrid that is half-domestic dog and half wolf. Given this, everyone thinks of Balto as part wild and shun him. The real Balto was a regular sled dog, i.e. a Siberian Husky, which to be fair is the closest relative of wolves. •So the part of the film that is a true story - In Winter 1925, the remote town of Nome, Alaska suffered an outbreak of diphtheria, especially amongst the children and the town's supply of antitoxin had expired. Given it's Northern Alaska in winter, the only means of transporting more antitoxin was via sled dog. Balto led the team that brought the medicine into town. What the film doesn't show is that there were multiple sled dog teams transporting the medicine for different stretches of the trip. While Balto did led the last team, most mushers would tell you the real hero was a dog named Togo, who led the team that ran the longest and most dangerous parts of the route. •Bucket List Item - go see the Northern Lights •Sandra Dickinson voices Jenna's "friends." •Hospice Care = we've done all we can, so now all we can do is make the patient's life as comfortable as possible before death. •In terms of size, the largest bear species are Kodiaks and Polars. Both also have Humans as part of their diet, so only see them in zoos. •There's apparently an alternate ending, where Steele confronts Balto and the team side with Balto. It doesn't end well.

The KZbin channel Biographics has a video about Balto. While yes he did not do the hardest part of the journey, it was not his or his sledders intent to get all the credit. Journalists from all over were writing about this event so when he and his team came through they just rolled with it for their headlines. I really encourage you and anyone reading this to watch the Biographics video.
